104 min. In Icelandic with English subtitles.

After two young girls, ages seven and ten, disappear from a playground and are found brutally murdered, Reykjavik is rocked by the tragedy. As detectives Edda Davíðsdóttir and Jóhannes Scram track down clues, determined to solve the case by any means necessary, they also uncover a series of disturbing details that makes them realize that it may be one of the worst crimes in the history of the city.

And as Edda is drawn personally into the case — when her brother, recently released from prison, is named one of the suspects — the uncertainty surrounding the crime becomes all the more pervasive.

Icelandic events at Scandinavia House are made possible by the Consulate of Iceland in New York and Iceland Naturally in celebration of the centenary of Iceland’s independence and sovereignty.

About the Director

This is Anton Sigurðsson’s second feature film. In 2014 he became the youngest director in the history of Icelandic film with the debut of Secret & Lies, starring some of Iceland’s most well-known actors. Cruelty has been a major box-office success in Iceland, with attendance rates second only to Baltasar Kormákur´s film The Oath.

Iceland 100

In celebration of the centenary of Iceland’s independence and sovereignty, Scandinavia House and the Consulate of Iceland in New York bring you an Icelandic movie of the month through 2018.
