Scandinavia House’s current exhibition, Independent Visions, showcases the remarkable work of four Finnish women who worked and lived as artists at the turn of the 20th century. Featuring fifty-five works from the collection of Ateneum, Finnish National Gallery, the exhibition includes Helene Schjerfbeck’s unique self-portraits, Ellen Thesleff’s colorful woodcuts, Sigrid Schauman’s lush and delicate landscapes, and Elga Sesemann’s brooding expressionist portraits. In this series of workshops, we work every week with a different technique. Children will create their own bold portraits, colorful prints, or paintings. Workshops will begin in the gallery with observation of the weekly, featured artist’s work and will continue in the Halldór Laxness Library, where children focus on their own creations.

Color Me Happy—Scratch art paintings
SAT—9-23

Color theory claims that complementary colors (opposite colors) are especially pleasing when used together. Yet, the meaning and use of colors vary, depending on culture and circumstances. Sigrid Schauman’s work Model (1958) is about big intensive fields of complementary colors and rigorous use of palette knife to scrape off the surface of the painting. In the workshop children will explore color combinations and create intense, bright scratch art works.
