Ingmar Bergman: A Tribute in Film continues with The Virgin Spring (1960), winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a harrowing tale of faith, revenge, and savagery in medieval Sweden. Starring frequent Bergman collaborator and screen icon Max von Sydow, this film about a father’s need to avenge the death of his child, set in 14th-century Sweden, depicts a world teetering between paganism and cruelty, in ways both beautiful and cruel.

A rare Bergman film written by someone else — the novelist Ulla Isaksson, from a folk ballad titled The Virgin Spring —the movie was also inspired by Bergman’s viewing of Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon. It was the inspiration behind many future films, including Wes Craven’s first feature film, The Last House on the Left.

Ingmar Bergman: A Tribute in Film

On the centenary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth, Scandinavia House presents a tribute to the late artist with screenings of seven films organized by Laurence Kardish (former Senior Curator of Film, MoMA), beginning with a special event with Liv Ullmann, the celebrated actress, director, and partner of Bergman. On September 26, Ullmann joins us to present an introduction to a screening of Bergman’s final film Saraband (2003), the sequel to the iconic Scenes From a Marriage (1974), which returns to Marianne (Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson) thirty years after their divorce. Following the film that evening, Ullman will hold a special discussion with Kardish.

The series continues with a series of six classic Bergman titles that established not only his reputation in America, but contributed to the establishment of an art house cinema in the U.S.
