New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House returns in a virtual format! Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The ninth session of the series from April 23-29 features the film Games People Play /Seurapeli (Finland, 2020; dir. Jenni Toivoniemi).
A comedy about the tragedy of remaining forever young, Games People Play takes place over the course of a nostalgic weekend, when an old group of friends gathers to celebrate Mitzi’s birthday at an idyllic seaside villa — just as they did as teenagers. But the party gets off to a bad start when it turns out that the birthday girl isn’t so happy about the surprise; and with the addition of a new boyfriend in the group, who happens to be a Swedish Hollywood star. As familiar surroundings and old rituals get to the core of the group, other revelations surface that make them reassess both their past and present. (117 min. In Finnish, English, & Swedish with English subtitles.)
“In Jenni Toivoniemi’s rather lovely debut, who needs enemies if you have friends?”—Cineuropa
Festival films will be available to ticket holders all over the U.S. Each session is limited to 250 tickets in an effort to preserve the intimate and communal experience. The sessions will take place over seven days (Friday — Thursday), with all films available for viewing on a virtual cinema screening platform throughout this period.
