This Tuesday, Nordic-U.S. journalists based in NYC join Scandinavia House for a conversation on the changing landscape of immigration policies in the United States and in their home countries. What trends do they see as journalists occurring in Scandinavia and in the U.S.?  What challenges do they face, as foreign journalists, reporting in the U.S. compared to their own nations? What current programs and policies have changed and have been initiated in the past few years? What is the history behind these initiatives?

In this panel moderated by Sara Sundman, a panel of Nordic reporters will share their unique insight and stories into the current issues shaping immigration in America and Scandinavia.

About the Journalists

Fernando Arias is the New York Bureau Chief and US Correspondent of the Swedish National Public Radio. He has held that position since January 2017.  Mr. Arias joined the Swedish National Public Radio in 2010. Before moving to the United States he covered national security and terrorism.  His reporting in Sweden includes stories on the many Swedish men and women joining the Islamic State in Syria and in Iraq. He covered the 2015 terrorist attack in Paris and in 2016 he produced a two part documentary on the Swedish al-Qaida hostage, Mr. Johan Gustafsson, who was released after more than five years in captivity.

Mathias Ask is a US correspondent for TV2 Norway, where he covered both the 2016 and 2018 election. He’s based in New York.

Sandra Brovall is a US correspondent for Politiken, Denmark’s largest newspaper. Previously, a feature writer and award winning investigative journalist.

Mari Karppinen is the US correspondent for MTV3 News, the largest commercial TV network in Finland. In recent years, her reporting has taken her everywhere from the 2016 election trail, to Alaska’s melting glaciers, to a camp of vigilantes patrolling the border with Mexico. She is also a co-founder of Kokomedia, a production company based in Helsinki and New York. Her new, critically acclaimed documentary film, Trump’s America: A Nation Divided, explores Americans’ fears across the political spectrum, and the social rifts shaping today’s politics.

Sara Sundman (moderator) is a freelance journalist who has worked for the Finnish public broadcasting company YLE, the Finnish News Agency and Hufvudstadsbladet, the biggest Swedish language newspaper in Finland.
