Elsa is the mother and full-time caretaker of Lauri, who has been in a coma since being shot under shadowy circumstances. Attentive in her duties but at the end of her tether, Elsa receives Lauri’s visitors who unburden themselves to their comatose friend.

But as the police inquiry into the shooting progresses, some of his closest ties are called into question. Directed by Kadri Kõusaar (Estonia, 2016).

“An ostensibly disturbing subject is masked by wry humor in Kadri Kõusaar’s amusing though dark third feature.”—Jay Weissberg, Variety

Mother is Estonia’s selection to compete for the Oscar nomination for the 2016 Best Foreign Language Film.
