DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the March 9 panel “Masculinity & Culture — The Making of a Man” with writer/filmmaker Lo Dagerman and author Mark Greene\, Scandinavia House presents a Virtual Cinema event of Lo Dagerman’s 2019 film The Making of a Man from March 1 through 14. \nThe Making of a Man explores courage\, cowardice and toxic masculinity across time and place (postwar France\, Sweden and the contemporary U.S.). Its point of departure is a play by Swedish writer Stig Dagerman set in postwar France\, when French manhood had been badly bruised by the Nazi occupation\, and was being restored through false narratives and myth-making about French courage.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 4 at 6 PM ET\, American-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to an opening celebration for the digital exhibition Conversations with a Shipwreck\, a multimedia meditation on the Swedish warship Vasa created by ASF Fellows Joan Wickersham and Adam Davies! On view beginning March 4 through scandinaviahouse.org\, Conversations with a Shipwreck is a unique collaboration by two award-winning artists inspired by a mysterious vessel that was both destroyed and preserved by catastrophe. In tonight’s celebration\, artists Joan Wickersham and Adam Davies will be joined in conversation with author Darcy Frey (Director of Creative Writing\, Harvard University) to discuss the exhibition and the works on view\, as well as the enigmatic artifact that it explores. \nOn view in a unique interactive platform through June 5\, Conversations with a Shipwreck presents poems by Wickersham and large-format photographs by Davies\, accompanied by short durational video and audio\, and responds to the legendary warship — which sank only minutes into her maiden voyage — exploring themes of memory and oblivion\, technological triumph and fiasco\, permanence and impermanence\, mortality and time.

DESCRIPTION:New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House returns in a virtual format! Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The fourth session of the series from the week March 5-11 will feature the film Uncle /Onkle (Denmark\, 2019; dir. Frelle Petersen). \nIn Uncle /Onkle\, Kris lives on a derelict farm in a small Danish town that she runs with her disabled uncle\, with a quirky but loving relationship filled with daily routines and moments of comfortable silence. But when one day she miraculously saves the life of a newborn calf\, her dream of becoming a veterinarian — which she had put on hold to care for her uncle — is rekindled. In pursuit of her studies\, she develops a friendship with the chatty veterinarian Johannes\, and begins to branch out into the world beyond her small farm — even starting a relationship with a young man in town. But her overprotective role in her relationship with her uncle\, and her heavy workload in maintaining their farm\, continue to get in the way of her blossoming new life. \nA beautiful exploration of small-town Danish life that is both stunningly picturesque and quaintly endearing in its navigation of young love and complicated relationships\, Uncle has been acclaimed as “a film of revelatory detail (ScreenDaily) and a “quite exquisite slice of humanity” (Cineurope).
