DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the March 9 panel “Masculinity & Culture — The Making of a Man” with writer/filmmaker Lo Dagerman and author Mark Greene\, Scandinavia House presents a Virtual Cinema event of Lo Dagerman’s 2019 film The Making of a Man from March 1 through 14. \nThe Making of a Man explores courage\, cowardice and toxic masculinity across time and place (postwar France\, Sweden and the contemporary U.S.). Its point of departure is a play by Swedish writer Stig Dagerman set in postwar France\, when French manhood had been badly bruised by the Nazi occupation\, and was being restored through false narratives and myth-making about French courage.

DESCRIPTION:See a Virtual Studio Visit with the Norwegian – American artist Ida Lorentzen in Oslo\, Norway during the week of March 12 through 20! Ida Lorentzen is known for her paintings of rooms\, spaces and light\, with works reflecting both Nordic mystical detachment and stark American realism and filled with a deep reverence to history of places and lived life. Living and working on one of Oslofjord’s inner islands\, the atmosphere in which she lives is reflected in the quietness of her work. In today’s program\, she’ll bring us into her studio to share what she’s working on now. \nThe program will take place as a Virtual Premiere on both YouTube and Facebook; a link to the Facebook Premiere event will be added closer to the date. Set reminders at the links on either platform to watch and chat with us during the program\, or stream on this page throughout the week of March 12-20; the video will later remain available for viewing. Support for this program has been provided by the Inger and William Ginsberg Fund of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. \nThis event is the fourth in a series of Virtual Studio Tours from Scandinavia House. DESCRIPTION: FRI—March 12—8 PM EDT\n \n**This event will accompany the New Nordic Virtual Cinema presentation of Force of Habit from Scandinavia House.** \n  \nIn coordination with New Nordic Virtual Cinema presentation of Force of Habit /Tottumiskysymys during the week of March 12-18\, join us for a Virtual Film Talk with directors Reetta Aalto & Alli Haapasalo! \nBased on seven short films from Yksittäistapaus (the Force of Habit Anthology Series)\, which portrays women’s everyday experiences with imbalances of power\, Force of Habit follows seven different women who experience sexual harassment\, judgement\, underrating and exclusion throughout the course of one day.  How will others react? And is it really possible that these things happen all around us every day? Two of the seven directors who created the film — Reetta Aalto (Boudoir) & Alli Haapasalo (No Big Deal) will discuss the film as well as the anthology series\, which consists of Force of Habit as well as other short films and campaigns created by 15 filmmakers\, artists\, researchers and social influencers.
