DESCRIPTION:New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House returns in a virtual format! Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home in week-long sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The eighth session of the series from April 9 through 15 features the film Aalto (dir. Virpi Suutari; 2020\, Finland)\, a documentary and love story of Finnish modern architecture/design masters Alvar and Aino Aalto\, and an enchanting journey to their creations and influence around the world. Director Virpi Suutari will join us for a virtual film talk with Peter Reed (former Senior Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, MoMA) in coordination with the screenings; please check back here for more details closer to the date. \nAalto tells the story of Alvar and Aino Aalto\, a couple who shared their lives and great passion for the organic human-scale architecture. Together they worked to create a better and a more democratic modern world; in their philosophy\, the “little human” was always in the center. In 1949\, Alvar suffered the great tragedy of Aino’s death; he later married the architect Elissa Aalto\, and experienced one of his most significant periods throughout the 1950s\, continuing to work until he died in 1976. \nThe film shares for the first time Alvar and Aino’s intimate love story\, highlighting Aino’s importance as an equal architect colleague and visionary designer\, and takes us on a cinematic tour of their creative processes and iconic buildings\, including a library in Russia\, a student dormitory at MIT\, an art collector’s private house near Paris\, and a pavilion in Venice. Combining contemporary film material and rare unforeseen archives\, Aalto dives into the colorful history of modernism\, where we also meet the Rockefellers\, Le Corbusier and László Moholy-Nagy\, with narration both from the designers’ contemporaries and from researchers throughout the world. SUMMARY:Youth & Dependency by Tove Ditlevsen
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn April 13\, we’ll be discussing the books Youth & Dependency by Tove Ditlevsen\, Volumes 2 & 3 in the Copenhagen Trilogy\, which has been recently re-released in translation by Tiina Nunnally & Michael Favala Goldman. This session follows our Online Nordic Book Club of Childhood on March 16. The trilogy was the subject of a recent panel discussion with Michael Favala Goldman\, Morten Høi Jensen\, Rachel Kushner\, and Ben Lerner\, available to stream here. \nRead more about the history of Tove Ditlevsen’s life in an article from The History of Nordic Women’s Literature here; and see a review of the Copenhagen Trilogy from The New Yorker here. \nIn Youth\, following the events in Childhood\, Tove has been forced to leave school early\, embarking on a checkered career in a string of low-paid\, menial jobs. But she is hungry: for poetry\, for love\, for real life to begin. As Europe slides into war\, she must navigate exploitative bosses\, a Nazi landlady\, and unwelcome sexual encounters on the road to hard-won independence. Yet she remains ruthlessly determined in the pursuit of her poetic vocation—until at last the miracle she has always dreamed of appears to be within reach; in a strikingly honest and immersive portrait of adolescence\, filled with biting humor\, vulnerability\, and poeticism. \nIn Dependency\, Tove is only 20 years old\, but she’s already famous as a published poet\, and is married to a much older literary editor. Her path in life seems set\, yet she has no idea of the struggles ahead—love affairs\, wanted and unwanted pregnancies\, artistic failure\, and destructive addiction. As the years go by\, the central tension of Tove’s life comes into painful focus: the terrible lure of dependency\, in all its forms\, and the possibility of living freely and fearlessly—as an artist on her own terms. The final volume in the Copenhagen Trilogy\, and arguably Ditlevsen’s masterpiece\, Dependency is a dark and blisteringly honest account of addiction\, and the way out. \n

Build upon your existing knowledge of Swedish through targeted grammar practice aimed at facilitating more varied and professional written and spoken self-expression. A key facet of the curriculum is discussion of current topics about Swedish life and culture\, such as work situations\, history\, government\, and societal issues. \nYou also will be introduced to Swedish literature in the form of prose and poetry by well-known Swedish literary figures\, reading and discussing a short work of fiction to increase your familiarity with colloquial speech patterns and idiomatic expressions.
