DESCRIPTION:The Fourth Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns in 2021 as a hybrid festival with both in-person and virtual screenings on  November 3-14! From November 3 through 7\, in-person screenings and events will take place at Scandinavia House in New York\, presented in accordance with new COVID-19 safety guidance and protocols. Following the success of last year’s festival\, the online version will once again be available to viewers all across the U.S. via the Elevent streaming platform November 3-14. \nThe lineup of the largest U.S. festival presenting the latest award-winning and critically-acclaimed films from the Baltic region of Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania will be announced in late September. Festival passes and tickets will go on sale on Friday\, October 1st. SUMMARY:The 2021 Sámi Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:This November\, the 3rd Annual Sámi Film Festival explores Sámi values\, visions\, and stories\, through a series of short films and documentaries from  Sápmi\, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Russia. Presented a partnership between The National Nordic Museum in Seattle and Scandinavia House in New York\, with support provided by the Consulate General of Finland in New York\, The Embassy of Finland\, Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York\, The Consulate General of Sweden in New York and institutional support provided by the Pacific Sámi Searvi and International Sámi Film Institute\, films will be presented virtually from November 5 through 8\, with a live filmmaker panel taking place on November 7 at 2 PM. \nThe package “Short Films” presents seven shorts by Sámi filmmakers: Pulling in the Belt/Ribadit\, directed by Elle Sofe Sara; Liššá\, directed by Jonne Järvinen; Áile and Grandmother\, directed by Silja Somby; Giitu\, directed by Olve Aslaksen; A Home Truth\, directed by Rebecca King; Garjá\, directed by Lada Suomenrinne and Niki Rasmus; and Spring 2020/Vår2020\, directed by Ann Holmgren. \nThe Sámi Film Festival will also include “Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest\,” featuring the North American premiere of the feature Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest with the documentary Heidi. Each film package is $12\, and $8 for ASF Members and members of National Nordic Museum and Pacific Sámi Searvi. \nFilm Lineup\nPulling in the Belt/Ribadit\nShort film | Iceland | 2019 | 6 minutes | Elle Sofe Sara | North Sámi with English subtitles \nPulling in the Belt looks at the ancient Sápmi tradition of ribadit (pulling in the belt)\, as director Elle Sofe introduces two elders who have experienced the practice and orchestrates a revival with energetic young people and dancers. \nLiššá\nShort film/Documentary | 2014 | 13 minutes | Jonne Järvinen \nA documentary about Sámi handicraft. Two generations share the same interest together. Experienced crafts man Piera shares his knowledge about Sámi handicraft with his apprentice Markus. Can craftsmanship be a profession of today? \nÁile and Grandmother\nShort film/Drama | 2015 | 12 minutes | Silja Somby \nÁile is a young girl with a special relationship to nature that only her grandmother understands. Áile is taught how to use plants as medicine. But one day she discovers a secret that turns her little world upside down. \nGiitu\nShort film/Drama | 2018 | 18 minutes | Olve Aslaksen \nA woman returns home to her father and childhood home\, after being gone for 20 years. Marija Stonytė\, Lithuania/Estonia\, 2020\, Documentary). Three young women\, Agne\, Karina and Gintare\, decide to volunteer for military service after conscription for men is reintroduced to Lithuania as a response to possible threats from Russia. Living and training among 600 men on an isolated military base over the course of nine months\, each woman undertakes their training with their own romanticized ideas about what they want to get out of the experience; as their understanding of the realities of their situation changes over the course of the film\, their perspectives of life shift and change. Through director Marija Stonytė’s eyes\, Gentle Warriors captures their physical and emotional transformation into independent women\, responsible for their own faith and happiness. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. She has made short narrative and documentary films that have won national and international awards.  \nIn 2018\, Stonytė was selected by Vilnius Town Hall to be a Lithuanian representative in the lens based digital media artist’s residency in Aviles Spain. In 2016\, she was selected as a participant in the IDFAcademy and in the IDFAcademy Summer School in 2019. Facing the double threat of Stalin’s Soviet Union and Hitler’s Third Reich\, Estonia suffers a fatal blow when the Head of the Counter-Soviet Intelligence Unit is murdered\, raising suspicions of a mole within their ranks and leading Estonian spy Feliks Kangur to be called back from Helsinki to unearth the traitor. Global\, political\, and military events unfold at a dizzying speed as Feliks works against the clock to stave off an invasion by the Red Army. Paju has been an in-house director at NAFTA Films since 2008. He has directed several short films\, two documentaries\, a TV series and a number of commercials.  \nBesides directing\, Paju also writes scripts\, film reviews and articles about film history for several Estonian culture magazines.
