SUMMARY:Edvard Munch's Photography: The Experimental Self
DESCRIPTION:The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography\, an exhibition organized by American-Scandinavian Foundation with The Munch Museum in Oslo that first brought the photographic work of the master painter to NYC in 2017/18 before traveling worldwide\, returns to Scandinavia House this winter with a newly conceived design and a section including vintage camera equipment alongside the release of the 2020 illustrated book The Experimental Self: The Photography of Edvard Munch\, awarded with diploma as one of The Year’s Most Beautiful Books\, 2021 by Grafill\, Norway’s National Organization for Visual Communication. \nInternationally celebrated for his paintings\, prints\, and watercolors\, Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) also took photographs. In 2017/18\, the exhibition The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography at Scandinavia House drew widespread acclaim for introducing audiences to his photographic and film work\, emphasizing the artist’s experimentalism and examining his exploration of the camera as an expressive medium. This exhibition includes Munch’s experimental portraiture of friends and family as well as his self-portraiture\, including images from what he termed his “Fatal Destiny” portfolio\, staged between 1902 and 1908. By probing and exploiting the dynamics of “faulty” practice\, such as distortion\, blurred motion\, eccentric camera angles\, and other photographic “mistakes\,” Munch photographed himself and his immediate environment in ways that rendered them poetic. In both still images and in his few forays with a hand-held moving-picture camera\, Munch not only archived images\, but invented them. As a recent Financial Times Magazine review of the works states\, “Munch’s mercurial snapshots trace the survival of an artist obsessed with loss… his photographs remain tantalisingly opaque a century on.” \nHaving since traveled to eight venues worldwide\, including Seattle\, Oslo\, Stockholm\, Fredrikssund (Denmark)\, and Bergen\, the exhibition will be returning to Scandinavia House beginning December 10 in a new iteration\, including photographic enlargements and a display of the amateur camera models similar to those he used in his work. The exhibition will also feature a “selfie station” for visitors to interact with Edvard Munch’s experimental self-portraiture\, as well as the opportunity to browse the new publication\, which includes 120 fully illustrated pages alongside essays by curator Patricia G. Berman\, Tom Gunning and MaryClaire Pappas\, available for purchase in the Shop. On loan from the Munch Museum in Oslo\, Norway\, the approximately 50 copy prints in the exhibition and a continuous projection of Munch’s films will be accompanied by contextualizing didactic panels as well as a video presentation. It has been organized by the American-Scandinavian Foundation in partnership with The Munch Museum in Oslo\, Norway. It has been supported by the Inger and William Ginsberg Support Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series at Scandinavia House returns this season with select in-house and virtual screenings of films chosen by the Nordic & Baltic countries to compete for the Oscar nomination for the Best International Feature Film. On January 6 through January 9\, Scandinavia House\, the Scandinavian Film Festival of Los Angeles\, and with the BalticFilmExpo@SFFLA are proud to virtually present the film The Pit /Bedre (dir. Dace Pūce; Latvia/Finland\, 2020)\, Latvia’s official nomination for the 94th Academy Awards. A pre-recorded film talk with Dace Pūce will follow the screening. \nTen-year-old Markus struggles to adapt to a new life with his grandmother in a small rural village\, particularly after Emīlija\, a neighbor’s daughter\, makes unkind remarks about his father. In response\, Markus decides to teach her a cruel lesson — but when his act is discovered\, it has severe consequences which resonate throughout the village\, deepening Markus’ hatred of the locals even further. The only person he can relate to is an older man living in the nearby woods\, with whom he develops a mutual inspiration and trust to keep each others’ secrets. But only with an accidental turn of events\, and a plot for revenge\, will Markus’s reputation with the villagers change. (107 min. She holds a degree in music and began her career as a singer\, dancer\, and actor. Dace continued her studies at CS Martin College for Art Directing and the Latvian Academy of Arts. She has two MA degrees from the Latvian Academy of Music and Latvian Culture Academy in film direction and production\, has attended directing courses at Brighton Film School (UK) and New York Film Academy (USA)\, and has a certificate in the Meisner acting technique approach from True Acting Institute (USA). \nIn 2003\, Dace established Marana Productions and directed and produced many music videos\, TV commercials\, concerts and events. She has produced and directed several short films and documentaries and won awards and accolades for her music videos and short films.Her first feature film\, The Pit (2020) has achieved success in festivals around the world\, and won the Grand Prix awards – Tallinn Black Night Works in Progress (Estonia\, 2019)\, Nordic Film Days Lübeck (Germany\, 2020) and Baltic Debut Film Festival (Russia\, 2021). She was awarded the Best First Time Director in European Cinematography award for her second Latvia-India co-produced feature film Manny (2020).

SUMMARY:Music on Park Avenue with Per Tengstrand - About Schubert: The Arpeggione Sonata
DESCRIPTION:Music on Park Avenue is back! The popular series hosted by Scandinavia House and Per Tengstrand welcomes its audience back to Victor Borge Hall beginning in the fall of 2021. In the third concert in the series\, Tengstrand will be joined by Katie Liu on viola in a performance of Schubert’s “Arpeggione Sonata.” \nIn the series “About Schubert\,” Katie Liu and Per Tengstrand performed parts of Schubert’s wonderful “Arpeggione Sonata” by recording and filming their parts separately in New Jersey and Malmo\, Sweden. In tonight’s performance\, they will join together on the stage at Victor Borge Hall to play the whole work\, in addition to pieces by Bach and other composers.  \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. He has been described by The Washington Post as “technically resplendent\, powerful\, intuitively secure\,” and by The New York Times as “a superb Swedish pianist” whose recital “was rewarding\, both for its unusual programming and for his eloquent\, technically polished performances.”Tengstrand is the subject of the acclaimed Swedish documentary The Soloist\, directed by Magnus Gertten and Stefan Berg (Sweden\, 2003)\, which was featured at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in New York. \nIn 2005 he was decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the “Litteris et Artibus” Medal for outstanding service to the arts. During the pandemic\, Per started making music documentaries which were viewed and appreciated by people all over the world. As this line of work will continue\, the documentary Beethoven and the Freedom of the Will is planned to have its world premiere at Scandinavia House in 2022.
