DESCRIPTION:Learn the Nordic languages in classes offered this spring at Scandinavia House! In this beginner’s course\, you will build your Norwegian vocabulary\, pronunciation\, and grammar skills\, while also learning about Norwegian culture and life. By the course’s end\, you should be able to conduct simple conversations in Norwegian. \nYou will get to practice conversations and reading in class\, and there will be a focus on pronunciation\, and Norwegian vowels and sounds\, which may be new to your ear. Students are welcome to bring personal experiences\, anecdotes\, and facts about Norway into class discussions. There will also be at-home assignments focusing on reading\, writing\, and grammar\, as well as an optional end-of-semester presentation. \nOutside of class\, students are encouraged to watch Norwegian shows\, and movies\, read simple text\, and have Norwegian podcasts on in the background. \nThe required text will be provided via pdf\, before the first class. \nIdeal for: \n\nAbsolute beginners\nThose seeking a solid foundation in the Norwegian language\nThose interested in traveling to Norway\n\nYou will develop: \n\nBeginner-level conversational skills in Norwegian\nProficiency in basic Norwegian grammar\n\nThis hybrid class will be held both in-person and via Zoom; in-person attendance for the first four classes is highly recommended. Classes take place on Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:45-6:45 PM beginning Tuesday\, March 19. \nNo prerequisites required; instructions for remote learning will be emailed upon registration. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Scandinavia House and FarLit-Literature from the Faroe Islands in Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days\, join us for a Faroese literary event highlighting poetry\, children’s books and the importance of translation\, with bilingual readings\, author talks and translator insights! In this program\, four esteemed Faroese authors — Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs\, Kim Simonsen\, Rannvá Holm Mortensen and Bárður Oskarsson — will be joined by translators Matthew Landrum and Randi Ward to read from their works (either currently available in English translation or forthcoming) and will discuss their shared existential themes and how they prompt reflection on our impact on the world.
