DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 22 for a workshop inspired by artwork in Scandinavia House’s current exhibition\, Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century. Many of the included artists were influenced by their move to different art scenes in Scandinavian countries\, which also often connected to then-contemporary music and jazz. In this relaxed beginner workshop\, teaching artist Margrethe Aanestad will guide students in using collage and painting techniques to create visual interpretations of music and sound. African Americans in the 20th Century\, presented at Scandinavia House until Saturday\, March 8th\, 2025. \nNordic Utopia? looks at the significance of Denmark\, Finland\, Norway\, and Sweden as destinations for African American cultural figures including Ronald Burns\, Doug Crutchfield\, Herb Gentry\, Dexter Gordon\, William Henry Johnson\, Howard Smith\, and Walter Williams through a range of artifacts\, artworks (music\, paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, ceramics\, textiles)\, and documentary evidence (photography\, film\, and journalistic writing). \nIn this conversation\, the curators and scholars will discuss notable works\, stylistic influences\, and the undertold stories of various African American artists who sought new possibilities\, inspiration\, and environments in the Nordic countries in the 20th century. \nRegister
