DESCRIPTION:*This event is now sold out.* Workshops will continue throughout the run of Nordic Echoes; see a full list here. \nDiscover the beauty and versatility of birth bark in a Nordic Echoes workshop with artist Beth Homa Kraus! Through careful folding\, a bit of string\, and plenty of patience\, we’ll craft stunning Northern-inspired star ornaments to hang or gift. Learn about the harvest and process of birch bark while creating timeless treasures in this hands-on class! \nAll materials and tools will be provided. Students will each leave with one birch bark star. Note: a beeswax and walnut-oil mixture is used to condition the bark; please be mindful if allergies apply. This workshop is for ages 16+ and is limited to 10 participants; please enroll early to guarantee attendance. \n

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the Opening Weekend of Nordic Echoes — Tradition in Contemporary Art\, the first major traveling exhibition of contemporary Nordic artist traditions from the Upper Midwest\, join us for a panel discussion with four artists featured in the show: Kjetil “K.J.” Groven\, Beth Kraus\, Peter “Pekka” Olson\, and Sonja Peterson. Folklorist Victoria Stewart (Assistant Director\, Wayne State University Humanities Center) will moderate a conversation about their works in the show and their respective practices\, with a particular emphasis on wood.
