DESCRIPTION:Discover the beauty and simplicity of the fretted dulcimer in this engaging\, hands-on instrument workshop led by musician\, writer\, and folklorist Nils Caspersson. Rooted in Swedish tradition and influenced by 19th-century Scandinavian-American design\, the fretted dulcimer features a distinctive hourglass shape\, diatonic fret pattern\, elegant scroll\, and heart-shaped sound holes. Historically connected to instruments such as the Moraharpa\, Hummel\, and Psalmodikon\, it likely made its way to America with Scandinavian immigrants traveling along the Erie Canal prior to the Civil War. \nParticipants will learn the fundamentals of dulcimer playing in a welcoming\, beginner-friendly environment in two Saturday workshops! No prior musical experience is necessary. \nWorkshop 1 (90 minutes): \n• Introduction to tuning (D-A-D)\n• Basic strumming techniques\n• Play your first tune within minutes\n• Learn a traditional Swedish fiddle tune\, “Malberg’s Polska” (printed music provided)\n• Understanding the dulcimer’s fret pattern\n• Practice time and preparation tips for the next session\n• Q&A \nWorkshop 2 (90 minutes): \n• Playing with a wooden noter\n• Introduction to harmonics\n• Learn familiar tunes including “This Land Is Your Land” and “Winter Wonderland”\n• Chord techniques with “Josephine’s Waltz”\n• Basics of improvisation\n• Exploring CAD tuning\n• Instrument care and maintenance\n• Q&A \nParticipants should bring their own fretted dulcimer tuned to D-A-D. SUMMARY:CRAFT YOUR OWN AQUAVIT: A NORDIC EXPERIENCE
DESCRIPTION:Join us to create your own customized aquavit blend for this year’s Midsummer! On May 2\, Scandinavia House and Björk Cafe & Bistro will present a special learning\, crafting and tasting event in collaboration with Spritmuseumet in Stockholm\, Sweden. Participants will learn about the Nordic spirit’s history—including its origins\, evolving flavor profiles and traditions—through a video developed by Spritmuseumet. Following the introduction\, participants will be able to combine ingredients to create their own unique blend\, using ingredients ranging from citrus and/or lingonberry\, to juniper and elderflower\, to spices such as cumin\, dill and star anis\, ginger or even BonBon candy! Björk will complement the experience with a selection of upcoming spring/summer menu items\, along with a few traditional Scandinavian classics.
