SUMMARY:SWEDISH 1.1 — ENROLLMENT OPEN
DESCRIPTION:Learn the Nordic languages in classes offered at Scandinavia House\, held in-person and virtually! This course is for absolute beginners. \nIn this course students will learn vocabulary\, the very basics of Swedish structure and pronunciation while also discussing some quirks of Swedish life. No prerequisites necessary. \nThis hybrid class will be held both in-person and via Zoom; in-person attendance for the first four classes is highly recommended. Classes take place on Wednesdays from 6:00–8:00 PM beginning September 9 through November 18\, 2026. \nAt the end of the semester students will know: \n• Sentence structure in statements and questions\n• How to greet people\n• Numbers and how to tell time \nAnd be able to: \n• Talk about themselves and what they do in their day \n*Please note that there will be no class the week of October 19.* \nNo prerequisites required; instructions for remote learning will be emailed upon registration. SUMMARY:NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER: The Extravagant Bloom Brooch Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by trend forecaster Li Edelkoort’s prediction that “Extravagant Brooches” are trending\, we’ll make one ourselves! Join celebrated textile and performance artist Heidi Hankaniemi on a quest to repurpose vintage embroideries and sew a brooch on a backing of industrial felt with a brooch clasp. Materials are provided\, but if you have any old embroideries that you think are fitting and you wish to repurpose\, please bring those. Together\, we’ll create one-of-a-kind brooches by repurposing vintage floral embroideries and laces into wearable art. No sewing skills required. \nThis program will take place in this weekend’s NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER. \nPurchase Tickets \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nHeidi Hankaniemi was born in Ekenäs Finland and currently lives in New York City. She received her BA (Hons) Degree in Critical Fine Art Practice from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design\, London\, as well as a Diploma in Fine Arts from Kanneljärven Opiston taidelinja\, Finland. Heidi has exhibited throughout Europe and the United States\, including at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art\, St. Petersburg Metro Museum\, and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. \nHeidi’s work has been featured in Artnet\, Vogue UK\, FJORDS magazine\, Elle Deco ES\, Elle Decoration UK\, Elle UK\, Architectural Digest\, Frame\, I.D. magazine\, Interview magazine\, Crystallized\, Dazed and Confused\, Marie Claire\, Hello!\, among others. She was featured in Episode #1 of the documentary series Adress: New York\, Kaleido Productions/ YleFEM\, Finland. She has also been featured in Art TV\, with Felicity\, a documentary series thatlaunched in April 2023 on Airline Entertainment networks Worldwide.

Festival Director of New York Textile Month since 2020. A receiver of various grants for her work and projects\, and her contribution to the arts. Her work focuses on the process of making\, working with colors and textures\, and the history and culture of symbols and patterns in textiles. With a strong passion for textiles\, innovation\, and craft\, storytelling through hybrid layers of craft and technology is the foundation of Ragna´s practice. Early in her career\, she ran her fashion and textile studio in Reykjavík Iceland. In the past 15 years\, she has been living in New York\, Berlin and Reykjavik. In Reykjavik\, she was head of Textiles at Reykjavik School of Visual Arts and is currently living in New York where she runs her studio practice and works as the director of Edelkoort Inc and New York Textile Month.
