SUMMARY:FELTED NESTING BOWLS | WORKSHOP WITH HILARY SNELL
DESCRIPTION:Create your own felted nesting bowls in this workshop series led by Scandinavia House’s veteran knitter Hilary Snell! \nIn this 4-part series\, participants will learn how to cast on and knit in the round on double pointed needles to make a small\, knitted bowl. The first class will focus on the basics of how to use double pointed needles\, and the following classes will be spent following a simple pattern. Once the knitting is done\, students will take the bowls home to wash and felt them into household art! \nMaterials needed: \n• 1-2 skeins of Cascade 220 yarn (2 skeins are necessary for a contrast stripe on the bowl; if not\, just 1 skein will do). Whatever yarn you buy\, it must be 100% wool\, worsted or thicker. \n• A set of No. 10 US double pointed needles (dpns) \nStudents must feel very comfortable knitting and be willing to stretch into a new skill using double pointed needles. Skills required: casting on\, knitting\, decreasing stitches\, casting off. DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 17 for a virtual discussion of Democratization in the Nordic World with author and researcher David Delfs Erbo Andersen! David Delfs Erbo Andersen is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University whose work centers on causes of democratization and democratic stability. \nDenmark\, Norway\, and Sweden enjoy some of the happiest populations and highest standards of living in the world\, thanks in part to stable\, democratic systems of government. Here\, David Delfs Erbo Andersen presents a syncretic history of political and socioeconomic developments in the three Scandinavian countries since the early modern period\, and contrasts their peaceful transitions with the more dramatic histories of otherwise similar European countries\, like France and Germany. Unlike these and many other countries—the United States among them—Scandinavia’s transition to democracy from monarchy was not marked by major violent upheavals or extreme political antagonism. \nRather\, Scandinavia’s peaceful process of democratization owed itself to the development of a penetrative bureaucracy in the early modern period and the activism of cooperative associations\, first of farmers in the early nineteenth century and then of industrialized workers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thanks to the gradual\, relatively consensual adoption of political reforms and social norms\, the history of “Nordic democratic exceptionalism” today helps account for the ongoing stability of the Scandinavian countries. \nOut now from University of Wisconsin Press\, this in-depth study from political scientist David Delfs Erbo Andersen compares the formation of states and their impact on social classes and democratization from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries in Denmark\, Norway\, and Sweden\, in contrast with Prussia and France. \nREGISTER
