SUMMARY:SIX OSCAR-ELIGIBLE SHORTS
DESCRIPTION:On December 5\, see a special screening of six Oscar-eligible Nordic short films! The program will feature “Sauna Sickness\,” eligible for Best Live-Action Short\, “Please” and “The End\,” eligible for Best Animated Short\, as well as the Best Documentary Short-eligible films “Fear Fokol\,” “Time of Plenty\,” and “Postcards.” Filmmakers will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A and reception. \nPlease | Directed by Anna Mantzaris\, Sweden\, 2026 \nPlease is a dark comedy about humankind’s desire to love and to be loved; an animated short centred around neediness\, intimacy and romance. Told through a series of loosely connected\, tender and absurd scenes\, the film follows people who are searching for closeness and acceptance. \nFear Fokol | Directed by Tuva Björk\, Sweden\, 2025 \nWe take a nightly ride into the fears and anxieties of Johannesburg’s wealthy inhabitants by following the work of the private security guards hired to protect them. The illusion of security slowly dissolves as we dig into a fragile climate of inequality\, paranoia and masculinity in crisis. \nThe End | Directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr\, Sweden\, 2026 \nA series of animated vignettes of death and existence in a large\, international airport\, featuring a range of animal characters caught in utterly human situations. \nSauna Sickness | Directed by Malin Barr\, Sweden\, 2026 \nStruggling to maintain the peace she mistakes for love\, Cleo’s steamy New Year’s Eve plans fissure into a chilling nightmare. 2026 Nominee for Best Short Film at Sundance. \nPostcards | Directed by Freyja Kristinsdóttir\, Iceland/Spain\, 2025 \nA man embarks on a poignant journey along the Camino de Santiago\, marking his first pilgrimage with 46 postcards to his wife – one for each year of their shared life. Eight years later\, he retraces his steps along the Camino\, penning a final postcard to complete his heartfelt tribute. \nTime of Plenty | Directed by Freyja Kristinsdóttir\, Norway\, 2026 \nIs the story of Rapa Nui a warning of the end of humanity or a testament to human adaptability? An essay documentary\, narrated by Renate Reinsve\, uses the collapse on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) as a mirror for our current careening towards climate catastrophe. \nRegister

SUMMARY:BUILD THE CHAIR. MEET THE DESIGNER.
DESCRIPTION:Pull up a seat\, or rather\, build one. In this intimate workshop\, JOY founder and designer Fredrik Paulsen guides a small group through assembling a JOY chair by hand\, piece by piece. \nWhile you build\, Fredrik shares the thinking behind the design: why the chair looks the way it does\, where form gives way to function (and the other way around)\, and what each decision means. Along the way\, we’ll ask the bigger questions. What is a chair actually for? And how does your relationship to an object change when you’ve put it together yourself? \nYou’ll leave with a new perspective on the everyday objects around you\, and the satisfaction of having built something with your own hands. No experience needed\, only curiosity.

SUMMARY:JUL: NORDIC BALTIC DESIGN — OPENING RECEPTION AND SÄLÄ MAGAZINE LAUNCH PARTY
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening celebration of Jul: Nordic Baltic Design at Scandinavia House with a launch party for the Issue 03 of Sälä Magazine. \nSälä is an independent magazine on Finnish design\, published since 2025 by the Helsinki-based non-profit association Saelae. In Finnish\, sälä means odds and ends\, the miscellaneous things that gather on shelves and in drawers. The magazine approaches design with the same openness\, from everyday objects to the people who make them.  \nEach issue is built around a theme that looks at the field from a different angle. Much of the content comes through an open call\, so emerging designers appear alongside established names. Sälä’s tone is curious and encouraging\, and it treats design as something with real consequences for society.  \nIssue 03\, Nourishment\, was published in August 2026. It explores the concrete and abstract ways design sustains our minds\, bodies and environment\, with contributions from Hanna Anonen\, Antrei Hartikainen\, Laura Väinölä and Nikari\, among many others.  In the exhibition Jul: Nordic Baltic Design\, the objects on Sälä’s table are a small\, curated selection from the issue\, each one featured on its pages. Issue 04\, Nurture\, follows in fall 2027.  \nSälä is published in English and made by Mimosa Tast (executive producer and design consultant)\, Amanda Sandell (editor-in-chief) and Peppi-Lotta Heinonen (art director).  \nsalamagazine.com · @sala.magazine
