SUMMARY:MORTEN | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences! \nSee Ivan Pavljutskov’s Morten\, a coming-of-age film set between reality and the mystical in the Estonian countryside\, on November 7. Director Ivan Pavljutškov will be present for film talk and Q&A \nFifteen-year old Morten lives with his uncle Urmas and a one-eyed cat named Nurru in a crumbling farmhouse in an abandoned forest village. His mother works in Finland to save money for their future home\, and the boy has never heard anything about his father. Morten tries his best to hide the reality of his life from his classmates\, but finds it difficult without any money or self-confidence. What he does have is a camera—an old one that he inherited from his grandfather—and the photos he takes make him feel as if he’s at least good at something\, if not worthy of love.  \nUntil suddenly\, one day there are two people who do: Emilie\, a girl whom Morten dares to open up to for the first time in his life\, and who looks forward to meeting him more than anything. And then there’s Miia—a girl who shouldn’t be interested in someone like Morten at all\, but somehow still is. Based on Reeli Reinaus’ novel Morten\, Emilie and the Lost Worlds\, the film had its world premiere in the Special Screenings section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2026\, and has since won three awards at Italy’s Giffoni Film Festival. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:HOLY DESTRUCTORS | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences! \nTwo powerful forces\, both driven by hunger for life\, collide in director Aistė Žegulytė’s Holy Destructors (Biodestruktoriai)\, screening Saturday\, November 7 in NYBFF. Film composer Gediminas Jakubka will be present for a film talk and Q&A. \nThis powerful documentary delves deep into the invisible world of organisms that emerge during the decay of organic matter. Their presence transforms bodies into extraordinary energy that nourishes the soil and gives rise to new life in this endless cycle. By blending archival and new footage with shots of growing fungi\, director Aistė Žegulytė takes viewers on an enigmatic journey through a microscope lens\, where humans continue to fight against time by preserving images\, bodies\, and memories. \nWinner of Best Directing Award\, IDFA Envision Competition (2025)\, Best Baltic Documentary Film\, Doc@POFF Competition at Tallinn Black Nights (2025)\, and Best Documentary at Lithuania’s Silver Crane Awards (2026). \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:ULYA | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences! \nThe Saturday evening screening will feature the North American Premiere of Ulya\, a biopic of legendary Latvian athlete Uļjana Semjonova\, with a film talk with director Viesturs Kairišs. Latvia’s Showcase Film at this year’s NYBFF\, the film had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and is Latvia’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. \nSoviet Union\, Latvia\, 1964. On the Paberze farm in the snowy fields in Latgale\, teenager Ulya’s height is approaching two meters at an alarming rate\, and does not seem to be stopping. So far she has found a safe haven in her village\, where she is surrounded by her loving family and helps out with farmwork. But the question gnawing at her parents (and Ulya also) is: is there a place in the world for a giant-sized girl? \nWhen her older sister Tatjana’s fiancé Pavel secretly sends Ulja’s class photo to Karbergs\, head coach of the Latvian women’s basketball team TTT\, they soon have an answer. Seeing huge potential\, Karbergs whisks the girl away to capital Riga\, where Ulya hopes to find taller houses and taller people. But on the basketball court\, her height sticks out even more – until\, with the help of her ill-mannered and foul-mouthed coach\, she discovers that the best way to avoid derision is to start playing better.  \nWith hard work comes first success. But as Ulya rises on her path towards stardom\, she must deal with the painful realization that others see her as a means for their own ends\, and that basketball may not help her quest for a normal life. As an important professional test approaches—the famous Leningrad Spartakiad—Ulya must face her own reality\, and choose what she really wants.  \nPurchase Tickets

As a child born in 1962\, Salumäe struggled with an abusive home life\, shattered dreams\, and coaches with their own agendas—not to mention the harsh and dehumanizing sports system of the former Soviet Union. Despite this\, she went on to smash world records and rack up numerous medals\, culminating in an ultimate win: the first Olympic gold medal for Estonia in 56 years after the country regained independence in 1991. Directed by German Golub\, the recipient of the coveted Student Academy Award\, Our Erika features Karolin Jürise’s star-making performance as a determined and iron-willed athlete\, and shows how every nation needs a hero—even if that nation seldom stops to ask if there is something that the hero needs.  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:FJORD | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:“A brilliantly knotted social drama” (Variety) — On November 10\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening of the 2026 Palme d’Or winner and Romania’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the thorny\, riveting\, and Norwegian-set drama Fjord. \nRomanian-Norwegian couple Lisbet (Renate Reinsve) and Mihai (Sebastian Stan) move with their five children to Lisbet’s remote Norwegian hometown\, where their conservative Evangelical beliefs set them apart from the otherwise progressive community.  When they come under suspicion over their parenting\, Norway’s child-protection system enters their private lives\, and as their beliefs face public scrutiny\, a clash of values turns into an morally prickly battle over who gets to decide what constitutes a good family. \nA foundational figure of 21st-century Romanian cinema\, Cristian Mungiu earned his second Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for this searing\, discomfiting social drama. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve give superbly restrained performances as Mihai and Lisbet. Mungiu refuses to supply easy answers or simple paths to identification in this compelling provocation\, which poses unresolvable questions to viewers about our biases and presumptions. Fjord returns the director to many of his recurring themes: the freedom of the individual within contemporary political systems\, the culture clash between modernity and tradition\, and how human care can imperceptibly evolve into a form of control. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:GROWTH OF THE SOIL | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On November 11\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and director talk of Norway’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the “robustly classical\, weatherbeaten” epic Growth of the Soil! This program takes place as part of our Films from the Fjords series. \nA stranger appears over the mountain\, carrying little more than his determination. Isak (Herbert Nordrum\, The Worst Person in the World)\, a man without a past\, seeks a place to settle and carve life from the earth. High above the tree line\, he finds a barren stretch of land\, as unforgiving as it is full of promise. The land tests him to his limits\, until he meets Inger (Asta Kamma August)\, a solitary woman shaped by resilience and quiet secrecy. Together\, they endure the elements and build a life\, cultivating both the soil and a growing family as the seasons turn. Yet as years pass and the world closes in\, and time\, hardship\, and desire reshape them. \nA director best known for his collaborations with actor Stellan Skarsgård\, Hans Petter Moland demonstrates formidable command of his art with this powerful and richly textured adaptation of Growth of the Soil\, the 1917 novel that won its author Knut Hamsun the Nobel Prize in Literature. Sharing the original’s fervently realistic style and reverence for the natural world\, Moland’s latest feature opens as the captivating story of one man’s battle with a dauntingly rugged environment. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:BELOVED | FILMS FROM THE FJORDS
DESCRIPTION:“A love story full of the unspoken\, tenderness\, and mystery” — On November 12\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening to wrap up our Films From the Fjords series: the sparse\, beautifully-rendered drama Beloved. \nIn a small coastal town\, Asle and Gerd find each other in a tavern and become parents to a boy\, building a seemingly-idyllic life in the crook of the fjord. But soon enough\, their perfect love is put to test. Asle\, a sailor\, is inexorably drawn by the call of the sea\, leaving Gerd alone with the child as distance grows between them. Told in Fosse’s minimalist style\, through silence\, glances and landscape\, the story rests on deep compassion for three lives\, and asks how much distance love can endure before it breaks. \n\nDirected by internationally acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe (U-July 22\, 2018; Quisling\, 2024)\, BELOVED is an intimate relationship drama based on the only original screenplay by 2023 Nobel Prize-winning author Jon Fosse\, whose minimalist and deeply human language shapes a story of love\, distance and emotional rupture. Poppe’s precise visual storytelling and profound sensitivity to human vulnerability elevate the narrative into a universal exploration of intimacy\, absence and the fragile architecture of family life. The film stars Leo Magnus de la Nuez (Beforeigners\, 2019) and Kristi-Helene Giæver Engeberg (War Sailor\, 2022). \n\nPurchase Tickets
