SUMMARY:BELOVED | SCREENING & FILM TALK: FILMS FROM THE FJORDS
DESCRIPTION:“A love story full of the unspoken\, tenderness\, and mystery” — On November 12\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening to wrap up our Films From the Fjords series: the sparse\, beautifully-rendered drama Beloved. The screening will be accompanied by a film talk (details TBA). \nIn a small coastal town\, Asle and Gerd find each other in a tavern and become parents to a boy\, building a seemingly-idyllic life in the crook of the fjord. But soon enough\, their perfect love is put to test. Asle\, a sailor\, is inexorably drawn by the call of the sea\, leaving Gerd alone with the child as distance grows between them. Told in Fosse’s minimalist style\, through silence\, glances and landscape\, the story rests on deep compassion for three lives\, and asks how much distance love can endure before it breaks. \n\nDirected by internationally acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe (U-July 22\, 2018; Quisling\, 2024)\, BELOVED is an intimate relationship drama based on the only original screenplay by 2023 Nobel Prize-winning author Jon Fosse\, whose minimalist and deeply human language shapes a story of love\, distance and emotional rupture. Poppe’s precise visual storytelling and profound sensitivity to human vulnerability elevate the narrative into a universal exploration of intimacy\, absence and the fragile architecture of family life. The film stars Leo Magnus de la Nuez (Beforeigners\, 2019) and Kristi-Helene Giæver Engeberg (War Sailor\, 2022). \n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SEASIDERS | SCREENING & DIRECTOR TALK: FILMS FROM THE FJORDS
DESCRIPTION:On November 14\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening as a part of our Films From the Fjords series: the witty\, unrestrained documentary Seasiders. Directors Elisabeth Kleppe\, Henrik Hylland Uhlving\, and Elin Sander will be present for a Q&A following the screening. \nBlending a century of archive footage with the voices of storytellers\, Seasiders follows the Norwegian coast and its people through different eras\, memories and experiences. These people live at the mercy of the unruly weather and sea\, far from the centers of power – facing the open horizon and the world beyond. How has this affected their disposition\, sense of community and way of life? Do the people of the sea have their own distinct identity\, and is it still alive today?  \n\nGarnering the Launch of the Year title at the 2026 Norwegian International Film Festival\, SEASIDERS is a humorous\, epic and unsentimental love letter to the people who live along Norway’s coastline. Combining unique historical archive footage with the passionate storytellers from the coast\, the film is an abundant depiction of a culture anchoring many\, and concerning everyone. \n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE SQUIRREL | SCREENING & DIRECTOR TALK
DESCRIPTION:On November 17\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and director talk featuring Finland’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the absurd\, warm-hearted dystopian drama The Squirrel. Director Markus Lehmusruusu will be present for a film talk and Q&A. \nThe Squirrel / Orava\nDir. Markus Lehmusruusu\, Finland/Germany/Netherlands/Sweden\, 2026 | 93 min.\nIn Finnish with English subtitles \nIn the far future\, in a sterile\, frictionless world without nature or animals – Pasi\, a lonely\, compassionate designer of synthetic pets\, stumbles upon the last surviving squirrel by chance. He decides to defy the very strict regulations of interaction with what little nature is left in the world and help ease the squirrel back into its natural habitat. However\, when his actions lead to unexpected consequences\, Pasi is confronted with a profound dilemma: should he venture into the wild with the squirrel or jeopardize the safety of his fragile\, tightly-regulated world to keep the squirrel by his side? \nDeftly balancing biting satire\, a portrait of an authoritarian dystopia\, and a timid romance\, Markus Lehmusruusu kindles those fires of humanity in a world where they have nearly been extinguished. Its chilly aesthetic and deadpan humor inevitably evoke Aki Kaurismäki\, yet beneath the cold exterior lies a surprisingly warm story about resisting conformity and stepping beyond one’s comfort zone. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:JUST LOOK UP | SCREENING + FILM TALK
DESCRIPTION:On November 30\, Scandinavia House presents a screening and film talk of the defiant\, propulsive climate documentary Just Look Up\, a Danish qualifier for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. Directors Emma Wall and Betsy Hershey and producer Signe Byrge Sorensen will be present for a Q&A following the screening. \n\n\n\nHaving lived through decades of stagnant government response to sedate climate change protests\, Climate Defiance and founder/executive director Michael Greenberg pivot toward a different tack. This organization of young activists weasels their way into business conferences and crashes public and private events in order to nonviolently — but often wildly confrontationally — denounce the fossil fuel CEOs and politicians under the industry’s influence. Taking cues from the shock civil disobedience strategies of prior direct-action movements\, they aim to make these contentious and viral engagements impossible for today’s media ecosystem to ignore. \nDirectors Emma Wall and Betsy Hershey follow Greenberg and his fellow activists in their actions\, their crises\, and their breakthroughs. They share a desperation over the apathetic attitude toward the climate\, but that does not mean they agree on everything. With their non-violent actions\, they shake society awake and create viral waves on social media. And in Just Look Up\, this is fuelled musically by the likes of Chappell Roan\, Doechii and Billie Eilish – voices that\, like Greenberg himself\, speak on behalf of a generation that wants change now. \n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE SECRET READING CLUB OF KABUL | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 2\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and director talk of a Finnish qualifier for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the powerful documentary The Secret Reading Club of Kabul. \nIn Taliban-controlled Afghanistan\, where women are denied the right to study\, work\, and speak freely\, a group of young women make a radical choice: they read. Inspired by Anne Frank\, they secretly form a reading club and begin writing their own diaries — not as victims\, but as witnesses. The Secret Reading Club becomes an act of resistance: documenting their lives as a timeless defense of humanity\, beyond borders or eras. \nPartially filmed by the women themselves\, The Secret Reading Club of Kabul is an intimate and confidential testimony to the power of art to keep hope and humanism alive. It is also a moving declaration of love for literature and for the act of reading itself.  The story is interwoven with director Shakiba Adil’s own journey. As a girl\, she grew up under the first Taliban regime\, and after the fall of the Taliban\, she became the first woman to appear on Afghan television. After being forced to flee her homeland twice\, she has now dedicated her film to the new generation facing the same oppression she herself has endured. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:TRACES | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 8\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and film talk of Ukraine’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the powerful\, defiant war documentary Traces. Director Alisa Kovalenko and producers Olha Bregman and Natalia Libet will be present for a Q&A following the screening. \nTraces\nDir. Alisa Kovalenko\, Marysia Nikitiuk | Ukraine/Poland\, 2026 | 85 min \nThe film shines a light on Ukrainian women who\, after surviving conflict-related sexual violence and torture during the Russian war of aggression\, refuse to remain silent. Through the journey of Iryna Dovhan\, a former captive turned activist who documents testimonies of affected women in the de-occupied territories of Ukraine\, the film weaves a portrait of a collective trauma while opening space for hope. \nIryna gathers other survivors from diverse backgrounds into a circle of courage and care: Olha Cherniak is a civil servant in a district administration; Tetiana Vasylenko and Galyna Tyshchenko are entrepreneurs; Nina is a farmer; and Liudmyla Mefodivna Mlymrykova is a former Ukrainian language and literature teacher whose school was bombed. Together\, they transform their pain into a force for truth\, justice and mutual support. More than a record of war crimes\, Traces is a testament to resilience and the solidarity of women standing side by side. \nRegister
