Scandinavia House’s current exhibition, Independent Visions, showcases the remarkable work of four Finnish women who worked and lived as artists at the turn of the 20th century. Featuring fifty-five works from the collection of Ateneum, Finnish National Gallery, the exhibition includes Helene Schjerfbeck’s unique self-portraits, Ellen Thesleff’s colorful woodcuts, Sigrid Schauman’s lush and delicate landscapes, and Elga Sesemann’s brooding expressionist portraits. In this series of workshops, we work every week with a different technique. Children will create their own bold portraits, colorful prints, or paintings. Workshops will begin in the gallery with observation of the weekly, featured artist’s work and will continue in the Halldór Laxness Library, where children focus on their own creations.

Back to the Future—Self-Portraits with oil pastel crayons

Helene Schjerfbeck approached her self-portraits with a variety of different styles, attitudes and techniques—painting them well into her final years. Imagine yourself both now and ten years from now. Imagine how you would like to be when you grow up. Imagine yourself in the future. In this workshop, children will use oil pastels to create self-portraits that reflect how they see themselves, both now and in the future.
