2015 marks the centennial of Ingrid Bergman’s birth (1915-1982). One of Scandinavia’s most beloved actresses and one of the most celebrated figures in cinematic history, Bergman’s name is synonymous with Hollywood’s lamented Golden Age and iconic classics like Casablanca (1942) and Notorious (1946).

Comprised of three films, this mini-series focuses on the brief, but fruitful period that produced several classic films in Bergman’s native Sweden that capture her radiant screen presence prior to arriving in Hollywood.

Intermezzo

Directed by Gustaf Molander (Sweden, 1936). On a trip home famed virtuoso violinist Holger Brant (Gösta Ekblad) falls in love with Anita Hoffman (Ingrid Bergman), his daughter’s piano teacher and an aspiring classical musician. Brant invites Hoffman to join him on tour and their passionate affair that follows yields profound unforeseen consequences for them both.

Intermezzo was Sweden’s most celebrated film of the 1930s that brought 21-year-old Bergman’s talent to the attention of Hollywood producer David O. Selznick. Selznick later remade the film, casting Bergman in her American screen debut against actor Leslie Howard; the film’s success set Bergman on her path to becoming a Hollywood legend.
