The Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series at Scandinavia House returns this season with select in-house and virtual screenings of films chosen by the Nordic & Baltic countries to compete for the Oscar nomination for the Best International Feature Film. On January 13 through January 16, Scandinavia House, the Scandinavian Film Festival of Los Angeles, and with the BalticFilmExpo@SFFLA are proud to virtually present the film, Lamb (dir. Valdimar Jóhannsson, Iceland, 2021), Iceland’s official nomination for the 94th Academy Awards.
Childless couple Maria (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason) live together on a remote farm in Iceland with their herd of sheep, where their life is one of routine and calm. One day they make an alarming discovery in their sheep barn — a newborn lamb, whom they decide to raise as their own. But sinister forces are determined to return the creature to the wilderness that birthed her, and they soon begin to face the consequences of defying the will of nature. A dark and atmospheric folktale, this striking debut feature from director Valdimar Jóhannsson has been hailed as “grippingly assured” (RogerEbert.com) and “a cult movie in the making” (Rolling Stone). (106 min. In Icelandic with English subtitles)
“An ominous warning about the danger of seeking happiness through delusion”—NYTimes
“Noomi Rapace [is] outstanding in a wild horror-comedy of Icelandic loneliness”—Guardian
