DESCRIPTION:TUE—February 9—6 PM\, free \n**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n  \nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn February 9\, we’ll be discussing the book The Women I Think About at Night by Mia Kankimäki\, who joined us last month for a book talk on the novel with moderator Heli Sirviö\, available to stream here. \nBored with her life and feeling stuck in her mid-40s\, Mia Kankimäki decided to leave her job\, sell her apartment\, and travel the world to follow the paths of  female explorers and artists from history who inspired her. From Tanzania and Kenya\, she sought out the location where Karen Blixen of Out of Africa lived in the 1920s;  in Japan\, Mia attempted to cure her depression while researching famed contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama\, who has voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital for decades. In Italy\, Mia searched for the works of forgotten Renaissance women painters of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence\, finally finding  her heroines in the portraits of Sofonisba Anguissola\, Lavinia Fontana\, and Artemisia Gentileschi. If these women could make it in the world hundreds of years ago\, why can’t Mia? \nThe Women I Think About at Night is part travelogue and part thrilling exploration of the lost women adventurers of history who defied expectations in order to see—and change—the world.

One of Iceland’s leading contemporary artists Shoplifter (Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir) represented the country at the Venice Biennale in 2019\, and her installation Chromo Sapiens opened at the Icelandic Pavilion in May 2019 in Venice\, Italy\, before later traveling to the Reykjavik Art Museum in January 2020. Working with both synthetic and natural hair\, her genre-bending sculptures\, wall murals\, and site-specific installations explore themes of vanity\, self-image\, fashion\, beauty\, and popular myth. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL WORKSHOP AND STUDIO VISIT WITH MARIKA MAIJALA
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 6 at 11 AM ET\, join us for a virtual visit and workshop with award-winning author and artist Marika Maijala! In today’s program\, Marika will invite us into her studio on Harakka Island to introduce us to her art-making and drawing process\, which uses a distinctive oil-pastel technique. She will also discuss how the technique was used for one of her recent picture books Rosie’s Journey (Ruusun Matka)\, followed by a virtual reading of the book. \nAn illustrator of children’s books for all of the major publishers of Finland as well as worldwide\, Marika Maijala has received awards including the 2020 State Award for Illustration Art\, and was chosen in 2021 as one of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards candidates of Finland. She currently practices in the Harakka Artist’s House on Harakka Island\, located in Helsinki near Kaivopuisto Park\, which was previously used by Defense Forces before opening to the public in 1989 as a popular recreation area. The Harakka Artist’s House was created by the Helsinki City Cultural Centre in the island’s main building\, a former chemical laboratory\, and currently rents out studios to 30 professional artists and artisans. \nHer book Rosie’s Journey follows a very special trip made one day by Rosie the race dog\, and was released in October 2018 by Etana Editions. Illustrations from Rosie’s Journey were selected in The Bologna Illustrators Exhibition 2019\, and the book was also nominated for The Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize 2019. \nThe studio visit and workshop will take place via Premiere on YouTube and Facebook; set reminders at the links below to be notified when it begins. \nWATCH ON YOUTUBE \n \n*Facebook Premiere link will be added the week of February 1.* \n  \nAbout the Artist\nMarika Maijala has been awarded the Rudolf Koivu Prize for Best Finnish Children’s Book Illustration in both 2009 and 2019\, and nominated for Finlandia Junior Prize in 2008 and 2012. In 2015 and 2016\, her illustrations were shortlisted in The AOI World Illustration Awards\, as well as in the The White Ravens List in 2015 and 2016. \nIn 2016 she was awarded three-year grant for artistic work by Arts Promotion Centre Finland\, and in 2020\, she was awarded State Award for Illustration Art.  She has been chosen as one of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award Candidates of Finland in 2017\, 2018 and 2021.

DESCRIPTION:WED—January 13—1 PM ET \nOn January 13\, Scandinavia House invites you to the first of two international online panels dedicated to Jonas Mekas and his last book\, Transcript 04 44’ 14” Lithuania and the Collapse of the USSR\, now out from Humboldt Book! The event will be followed by a second panel with Brooklyn Rail on January 14. \nThirty years after the tragic and courageous struggle that led the Lithuanian people to regain their independence\, this panel will discuss the legendary Lithuanian-American filmmaker\, poet\, and artist Jonas Mekas (1922-2019) and his final book\, which retraces those events from a personal perspective. Transcript 04 44’ 14” Lithuania and the Collapse of the USSR originates from a movie by Mekas\, which is at the same time a precious historical document and a masterpiece of avant-garde cinema. In today’s panel “The Cinematic Diary as a Tool for Historical and Political Writing\,” the curator of the publication\, Francesco Urbano Ragazzi\, will dialogue with other thinkers\, artists\, and historians in a virtual roundtable involving Italy\, France\, Israel\, Lithuania\, and the U.S.: including Giovanna Silva\, Pascal Le Segretain\, and Oona Mekas\, with special guest Vytautas Landsbergis\, Head of State of the Republic of Lithuania\, who has described Jonas Mekas’ book as such: \n“Lithuania became part of the American life for some months\, for one year\, for two years and Jonas took it into his evidence\, into his camera. Jonas comes as areminder and does present Lithuania as a reminder. Lithuania is a little reminder of very great things.”

DESCRIPTION:TUE—January 12—6 PM\, free \n**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n  \nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn January 12\, we’ll be discussing the book A Drop of Midnight by world-renowned hip-hop artist Jason “Timbuktu” Diakité\, who joined us last fall for the online panel “Equity\, Inclusion\, and Immigration in the Nordic Countries\,” available to stream here. \nBorn to interracial American parents in Sweden\, Jason Diakité grew up between worlds—part Swedish\, American\, black\, white\, Cherokee\, Slovak\, and German\, riding a delicate cultural and racial divide. It was a no-man’s-land that left him in constant search of self. Even after his hip-hop career took off\, Jason fought to unify a complex system of family roots that branched across continents\, ethnicities\, classes\, colors\, and eras to find a sense of belonging. \nIn A Drop of Midnight\, Jason draws on conversations with his parents\, personal experiences\, long-lost letters\, and pilgrimages to South Carolina and New York to paint a vivid picture of race\, discrimination\, family\, and ambition. What unfolds in Jason’s remarkable voyage of discovery is a complex and unflinching look at not only his own history but also that of generations affected by the trauma of the African diaspora\, then and now. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Race in the Colonial Past and Present: Virtual Conversation with La Vaughn Belle and Jeanette Ehlers
DESCRIPTION:TUE—January 12—12 PM \n*This event will take place virtually via Zoom.* \n  \nAmerican-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual conversation between artists Jeanette Ehlers and La Vaughn Belle on “Race in the Colonial Past and Present\,” moderated by Ursula Lindqvist\, on January 12. In the mid-17th century\, Denmark established a colonial presence in the Caribbean and participated in the transatlantic slave trade until the early 19th century. Though Denmark was the first European country to abolish the transport of enslaved Africans in 1792\, approximately 120\,000 people from present-day Ghana were brought to the Danish West Indies (now the United States Virgin Islands) to plant and harvest sugar cane. The emancipation of slaves on the Danish West Indies occurred in 1848\, and the Virgin Islands’ former plantation economy collapsed. In 1917\, Saint Croix\, Saint John\, and Saint Thomas were sold to the United States and introduced into yet another national narrative. \nIn 2018\, Virgin Islands artist La Vaughn Belle and Danish artist Jeannette Ehlers created the monumental public sculpture entitled I AM QUEEN MARY\, inaugurated at the Danish West Indian Warehouse in Copenhagen. This project was the first collaborative sculpture to memorialize Denmark’s colonial impact in the Caribbean and those who fought against it\, challenging Denmark’s role in slavery and the commemoration of its colonial past and aiming to change the narrative around this history by centering the stories and agency of those who were brought to the Danish West Indies. \nListen to the two artists discuss colonialism and how commemorative representations can impact the public discourse surrounding Danish colonial history. What do these representations mean for people of African descent living in the Nordic Countries? What do they mean to the Virgin Islands? And how can they intervene in the historic\, current and future relationship between Denmark and the Virgin Islands? \nThe event will take place as a Zoom webinar. SUMMARY:We Carry It Within Us
DESCRIPTION:From January 12 through 24\, Scandinavia House presents virtual cinema screenings of We Carry It Within Us: Fragments of a Shared Colonial Past\, a documentary by Helle Stenum investigating collective memory and different perspectives on the shared colonial past between Denmark and U.S. Virgin Islands. The film will premiere in coordination with the virtual panel Race and Colonialism in the Past and Present\, featuring the artists Jeanette Ehlers with La Vaughn Belle\, who appears in the documentary. \nWho and what are being remembered\, and how is the story of a past told? The colonial history\, slavery\, and the transatlantic slave trade have often been told in Denmark from a Danish perspective by a model of “Danes telling the narrative about and for (primarily) other Danes.” In Denmark there is a national narrative of being the first country to abolish slave trade in 1792\, and that the governor of the islands\, Peter von Scholten gave the slaves their freedom in 1848\, but how does this shared past look from the perspective of the U.S. Virgin Islands? \nIn the documentary\, the legacy of slavery and enslavement\, the memory of the Danes\, the sales of the islands and the relationship to the U.S. are told through recordings which have been conducted on St. Croix\, New York and Copenhagen. Other versions of the past are told that differ from the Danish narrative: stories about the emancipation from slavery and names of freedom heroes\, who are unknown in Denmark. \nIn this film\, see and listen to the colonial history told through the memories\, experiences and reflections from descendants of former Danish Afro-Caribbeans on the Virgin Islands (the artist La Vaughn Belle\, the student Chenoa Lee\, the author Tiphanie Yanique and the anthropologist Tami Navarro)\, along with art and cultural historians who tell about Denmark and Europe’s role in the enslavement and the transatlantic slave trade — and how the colonial history is leaving its mark in today’s words\, art\, museums\, education and wealth as well as in various types of memory and forgetfulness. \nTickets are $5 and free for ASF Members; a ticket code will be sent out to ASF Members shortly before it begins screening. \nTo register for Race and Colonialism in the Past and Present\, which will take place on January 12 at 12 PM\, please click here. \nHelle Stenum\, PhD\, researcher\, educator\, has for many years worked on issues such as migration\, culture\, collective memory\, ethnic relations\, transnational connections\, race and gender constructs at universities and as independent researcher and consultant. \nWe Carry It Within Us is her first documentary and builds upon her profound knowledge on the colonial connection and her wide international network. \n
