In conversation with Kelly Ramot\, Executive Director of Thanks to Scandinavia (TTS)\, they will discuss the book about their daughter Kim\, who was an ASF Fellow in 2013-14 as well as a TTS Scholar. \nKim Wall was a thirty-year-old Swedish freelance journalist with a rising career. Then\, in the summer of 2017\, she followed a story that led to an eccentric inventor in Copenhagen. Instead of writing the next day’s headline\, she’d become one. As the bizarre events of Kim’s murder unfolded\, the world watched in shocked disbelief. For Kim’s distraught parents\, Ingrid and Joachim\, it was a devastating personal struggle. DESCRIPTION:SAT—February 20—1 PM ET \n\nOn February 20\, join us for an online celebration of the American architect Louis Kahn\, who was born 120 years ago on this day in Estonia. In this program\, see a discussion with some of the people closest to Kahn: distinguished landscape architect Harriet Pattison; her son\, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn; and William Whitaker\, Curator\, The Architectural Archives\, University of Pennsylvania Stewart Weitzman School of Design. \n\nThe program will include a discussion of Pattison’s new book Our Days Are Like Full Years\, (Yale University Press\, 2020)\, in which she recounts her passionate and sometimes searing 15-year relationship with Kahn. Married and 27 years her senior\, Kahn sent her scores of letters—many from far-flung places—until his untimely death. This book weaves together Pattison’s own story with letters\, postcards\, telegrams\, drawings\, and photographs that reveal Kahn’s inner life and his architectural thought process\, including new insight into some of his greatest works\, both built and unbuilt. Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. Films in the second session of the series from the week of February 19 through February 25 are Phoenix /Føniks (Norway\, 2018; dir. Camilla Strøm Henriksen) and Transnistra (Sweden\, 2019; dir. Anna Eborn). \nIn Phoenix /Føniks\, from an early age\, 13-year-old Jill has been the primary caretaker for her younger brother and her troubled mother\, a once-celebrated\, mentally unstable artist. When her estranged father announces a surprise visit for her 14th birthday\, the children receive a spark of much-needed hope\, with the promise of escaping their suffocating household for a day in the brighter world outside. He has a Ph.D. in Korean studies and he has among others conducted research within the fields of critical adoption studies and Swedish critical race and whiteness studies and he recently published the book White Melancholia together with Catrin Lundström. For many years\, he has also written extensively on the Swedish far right and right-wing populism. \nCatrin Lundström is Associate Professor of Sociology and Professor Designate in Ethnicity and Migration at the Institute for Research on Migration\, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO)\, Linköping University\, Sweden. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Uppsala University. Her research focuses the intersections of privilege and inequality in relation to whiteness\, gender\, migration\, nationality and citizenship. She is the author of the book White Migrations: Gender\, Whiteness and Privilege in Transnational Migration (Palgrave\, 2014) and the co-author of White Melancholia: an Analysis of a Nation in Crisis (Makadam\, 2020) together with Tobias Hübinette.   \nBenjamin R. Teitelbaum is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and International Affairs at the University of Colorado\, Boulder. Most of his research focuses on ideology and expressive culture in contemporary radical nationalist\, populist and neofascist movements. He is author of two books: Lions of the North: Sounds of the New Nordic Radical Nationalism (Oxford University Press\, 2017) and War for Eternity: The Return of Traditionalism and the Rise of the Populist Right (HarperCollins\, Penguin\, and Unicamp 2020). Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. Opening the series on the week of February 12 through February 18 are the films The Deposit /Tryggð (Iceland\, 2019; dir. Ásthildur Kjartansdóttir) and Gods of Molenbeek /Aatos ja amine (Finland\, 2019; dir. Reetta Huhtanen) \nThe Deposit /Tryggð follows Icelandic journalist Gisella\, who is on the verge of bankruptcy\, having quit her steady job in order to write more hard-hitting stories as a freelancer while struggling with debt. After an assignment on Reykjavík’s housing crisis puts her into contact with two immigrant women squatting in a nearby estate — Abeba and her daughter Luna\, from Uganda\, and Marisol\, from Colombia — she decides to rent them two of the spare bedrooms in her house. What begins as a warm and hospitable arrangement for all soon begins to develop tensions\, particularly as Gisella increasingly inserts herself in her new tenants’ lives; and as suspicions from each side begin to escalate\, a power struggle develops that could have disastrous consequences.  Based on the bestselling novel of Auður Jónsdóttir\, The Deposit is a suspenseful psychological drama exploring the perils of cultural isolation\, acclaimed as “a compelling psychological drama” (Cineurope). Directed by Ásthildur Kjartansdóttir (110 minutes. In Icelandic and Swahili with English subtitles. \nIn director Reetta Huhtanen’s documentary Gods of Molenbeek /Aatos ja amine\, the Molenbeek-Saint-Jean district of Brussels is widely known as a likely jihadi capital. But to six-year-old Aatons and Amine\, it’s a familiar home where they listen to spiders\, discover black holes\, and argue over who will get to steer the flying carpet that will take them to the lands of their ancestors. It’s also a place where\, amid a backdrop of suicide bombings and police patrols\, they must ponder bigger existential questions about religion and higher power. Aatos wants a god of his own; Amine already has Allah; and their friend Flo thinks that people who believe in God have gone crazy.  In this child’s-eye portrait\, Huhtanen captures the refreshing clarity with which the kids strip spirituality down to its basic principles and question knowledge itself\, while using make-believe to make sense of the senseless: “The filmmaker has cleverly made a film that puts the magic of childhood in the foreground”—Tue Steen Müller\, Filmkommentaren. Directed by Reetta Huhtanen (73 minutes. DESCRIPTION:THU—FEBRUARY 4 THROUGH THU—APRIL 22\nTHURSDAYS—6:30–8:35 PM\n$749 \n*This course will take place as remote learning.* \nScandinavia House promotes the importance of language learning in exploring Nordic culture through classes offered by NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting. \nIn this course\, which builds upon Swedish I\, continue to expand your vocabulary and to master grammatical structures. The instructor provides greater opportunities for expanding the range of your conversational ability. The course is conducted in Swedish to the extent possible. \nYou’ll walk away from this course with greater proficiency in  Swedish grammar as well as improved conversation and grammar. Swedish II is ideal for students with a basic knowledge of or previous instruction in Swedish and those who wish to strengthen their Swedish language skills. \nClasses will take place online as remote learning. NYU CALA offers courses in twenty languages including Danish\, Norwegian and Swedish. Finnish and Icelandic can be offered upon request. Whether supporting Scandinavia House members in connecting with their roots through learning the language of their ancestors or family members\, deepening New Yorkers’ cultural understanding\, or facilitating travel through competence in other languages\, courses encourage exploration. \nThe courses are offered on a semester basis at Scandinavia House. Levels range from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The department has the capacity to open high levels and special sections should there be a demand for such. \nCALA is a national leader in foreign language instruction and all its instructors are experienced in teaching their respective languages to adults. \n
