Build upon your existing knowledge of Swedish through targeted grammar practice aimed at facilitating more varied and professional written and spoken self-expression. A key facet of the curriculum is discussion of current topics about Swedish life and culture\, such as work situations\, history\, government\, and societal issues. \nYou also will be introduced to Swedish literature in the form of prose and poetry by well-known Swedish literary figures\, reading and discussing a short work of fiction to increase your familiarity with colloquial speech patterns and idiomatic expressions. Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn March 16\, we’ll be discussing the book Childhood by Tove Ditlevsen\, which has been recently re-released in translation by Tiina Nunnally as part of the The Copenhagen Trilogy. The trilogy was the subject of a recent panel discussion with Michael Favala Goldman\, Morten Høi Jensen\, Rachel Kushner\, and Ben Lerner\, available to stream here. \nTove knows she is a misfit whose childhood is made for a completely different girl. In her working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen\, she is enthralled by her wild\, red-headed friend Ruth\, who initiates her into adult secrets. But Tove cannot reveal her true self to her or to anyone else. For “long\, mysterious words begin to crawl across” her soul\, and she comes to realize that she has a vocation\, something unknowable within her—and that she must one day\, painfully but inevitably\, leave the narrow street of her childhood behind. \nChildhood\, the first volume in the Copenhagen Trilogy\, is a visceral portrait of girlhood and female friendship\, told with lyricism and vivid intensity. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Masculinity & Culture — The Making of a Man – Virtual Conversation with Lo Dagerman and Mark Greene
DESCRIPTION:TUE—March 9—7 PM ET \n*The conversation will be accompanied by virtual cinema screenings of The Making of a Man.* \nAmerican-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual conversation between filmmaker Lo Dagerman and author Mark Greene on “Masculinity and Culture”\, moderated by Benjamin Mier-Cruz on March 9. \nImmediately following WWII\, a young Swedish journalist\, Stig Dagerman\, is sent into war-torn Europe. He writes a path-breaking travelogue from the ruins of Germany\, and is in 1947 dispatched to Paris. French manhood had been humiliated by the Nazi occupation\, and it’s now being restored through false narratives and myth-making about manly courage. Inspired by people he meets\, Dagerman pens the play Marty’s Shadow\, about a young man who becomes a victim of rampant toxic masculinity. \nIn 2017\, Stig Dagerman’s play opened at the August Strindberg Repertory Theater in New York. In her documentary The Making of a Man\, filmmaker Lo Dagerman traces her father’s journey in France in the 1940s and interviews the director and cast of the New York production\, discovering that the young actor playing the lead in Marty’s Shadow has his own very personal insight into toxic masculinity. Rather than being dated\, the play very much resonates in the current United States. \nLo Dagerman will be joined by Mark Greene\, whose book The Little #MeToo Book for Men (ThinkPlay Partners\, 2018) was written as part of a movement to help change how contemporary culture conditions boys and men. Exploring how man box culture contributes directly to economic and sexual violence against women\, the book has been hailed as “nothing short of a blueprint for men’s liberation.” During their conversation\, Dagerman and Greene will discuss the predicament of boys and young men in the culture that shapes them. What values drive male socialization today? What is dominance-based male box culture? What is toxic masculinity and how can men withstand pressure to conform? What is the role of women in promoting toxic ideals? The fourth session of the series from the week March 5-11 will feature the film Uncle /Onkle (Denmark\, 2019; dir. Frelle Petersen). \nIn Uncle /Onkle\, Kris lives on a derelict farm in a small Danish town that she runs with her disabled uncle\, with a quirky but loving relationship filled with daily routines and moments of comfortable silence. But when one day she miraculously saves the life of a newborn calf\, her dream of becoming a veterinarian — which she had put on hold to care for her uncle — is rekindled. In pursuit of her studies\, she develops a friendship with the chatty veterinarian Johannes\, and begins to branch out into the world beyond her small farm — even starting a relationship with a young man in town. DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the March 9 panel “Masculinity & Culture — The Making of a Man” with writer/filmmaker Lo Dagerman and author Mark Greene\, Scandinavia House presents a Virtual Cinema event of Lo Dagerman’s 2019 film The Making of a Man from March 1 through 14. \nThe Making of a Man explores courage\, cowardice and toxic masculinity across time and place (postwar France\, Sweden and the contemporary U.S.). Its point of departure is a play by Swedish writer Stig Dagerman set in postwar France\, when French manhood had been badly bruised by the Nazi occupation\, and was being restored through false narratives and myth-making about French courage.

A spatial and product designer\, Kuitunen has also created several curated exhibitions\, and will be one of the three artists on view in the studio exhibition Between Us at Amos Rex this spring. Through his haptic work creating handmade art and design objects\, Tero wants to find something that moves and touches people; materials and colors are often his biggest inspiration when starting a new design project. \nDuring the studio visit\, we will also learn how to make a woven wall hanging with paper yarn and craft mesh in a craft workshop! This simple but impressive technique Tero has lately applied to his design work blurs the line between art and design.
