DESCRIPTION:WED—April 28—1 PM (ET) \n*This event will take place online as a Virtual Panel.* \nOn April 28\, please join ASF for a virtual round-table discussion on Indigenous Activism in the Nordic Countries\, with Sámi artist Sofia Jannok\, Inuk anthropologist and Indigenous rights activist Qivioq Nivi Løvstrøm\, & Sámi activist Beaska Niilas\, moderated by Iñupiaq Inuit wildlife and conservation biologist Victoria Qutuuq Buschman.  In their discussion\, the panelists will look at what comprises activism in the Nordic countries and the issues being addressed. \nThey will also look at common misconceptions about Indigenous peoples and their rights\, how Indigenous activists today are engaging with climate change\, and how others can best support activism in the Arctic countries. \nThe event will take place via Zoom webinar; please register at the link above. SUMMARY:Big Heart\, Strong Hands — Virtual Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:On April 17\, American-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual talk with photographer Anne Helene Gjelstad on her documentary book Big Heart\, Strong Hands\, out now from Dewi Lewis Publishing. She will be joined by moderator & photographer Erika Larsen (Sàmi: Walking with Reindeer).  \nBig Heart\, Strong Hands is the story of the women on the Estonian islands Kihnu and Manija in the Baltic Sea. Geographically isolated\, over centuries a strong sense of community spirit and a steadfast attachment to their ancestor’s customs has developed. Often viewed as the last matriarchal society in Europe\, the women here take care of almost everything on land as their husbands travel the seas. \nGjelstad has photographed the daily lives and activities of the women\, their clothing\, bedrooms\, kitchens and farmhouses as well as the surrounding landscape ­– even a ceremony in a deceased person’s kitchen only three hours after she had passed away. She has also interviewed the women about their lives\, struggles and losses and their thoughts on the future. We learn of the development of this unique society\, the harsh conditions it endured over many decades as part of the Soviet Union\, as well as its culture and folk dressing customs. These are the hushed voices of culture bearers who need to be heard\, for this is a small society rapidly moving towards Western standards\, and where traditional culture and identity is inevitably slipping away. \nIn today’s event\, Gjelstad and Larsen will discuss the work over the past 11 years that went into the project\, as well as the lives and culture it portrays; including the matriarchal order of the islands\, their work with textiles\, and the preservation of the society. After launching a one-person battle\, Inga attempts to persuade other farmers join her in rising up against the cooperative’s corruption\, but encounters great resistance\, forcing her to confront the community’s dependence and loyalty to its single\, dominant enterprise. To break free of the cooperative’s grasp\, Inga must use her resourcefulness and cunning to finally live life on her own terms. (Directed by Grímur Hákonarson; 92 min. DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn April 13\, we’ll be discussing the books Youth & Dependency by Tove Ditlevsen\, Volumes 2 & 3 in the Copenhagen Trilogy\, which has been recently re-released in translation by Tiina Nunnally & Michael Favala Goldman. This session follows our Online Nordic Book Club of Childhood on March 16. The trilogy was the subject of a recent panel discussion with Michael Favala Goldman\, Morten Høi Jensen\, Rachel Kushner\, and Ben Lerner\, available to stream here. \nRead more about the history of Tove Ditlevsen’s life in an article from The History of Nordic Women’s Literature here; and see a review of the Copenhagen Trilogy from The New Yorker here. \nIn Youth\, following the events in Childhood\, Tove has been forced to leave school early\, embarking on a checkered career in a string of low-paid\, menial jobs. But she is hungry: for poetry\, for love\, for real life to begin. As Europe slides into war\, she must navigate exploitative bosses\, a Nazi landlady\, and unwelcome sexual encounters on the road to hard-won independence. Yet she remains ruthlessly determined in the pursuit of her poetic vocation—until at last the miracle she has always dreamed of appears to be within reach; in a strikingly honest and immersive portrait of adolescence\, filled with biting humor\, vulnerability\, and poeticism. \nIn Dependency\, Tove is only 20 years old\, but she’s already famous as a published poet\, and is married to a much older literary editor.
