Her books include Repuls (Repulsion\, 2011)\, Sinnesvåld (Sense Violence\, 2013) and Konsten at med hvissa metodiska rörelser hemkalla en hädangången til lifvet (The art of recalling a deceased person to lif with certayne methodical movements\, 2020). She is a translator of poetry. A sometime member of the Surrealist Group of Stockholm\, Boberg draws on psychoanalytic\, surreal\, and feminist discourses in her poetry. She also participates in the feminist-literary project Shaerat\, which over the past ten years have involved writers from Sweden\, Palestine\, Iran\, Iraq\, Bahrain and Algeria among others\, in workshops to facilitate translating and networking among female poets. Sense Violence was published by Black Ocean\, U.S.A.\, in 2020. Sense Violence is among the nominées for the 2021 PEN America Literary Awards. Repuls (Repulsion\, 2011)\, was translated by Ibrahim Abdulmalik and published in Egypt as the first within a year-published Swedish collection of poetry ever (Merit Publishing House\, 2012). Boberg has been translated and published internationally in several printed and online literary journals; in Brazil\, Denmark\, Finland\, Iraq\, Iran\, Rumania\, Saudi-Arabia\, Ukraine\, U.S.A. Her latest book is nominated for Swedish Radio’s poetry prize 2021. \nJohannes Göransson is the author of eight books of poetry and criticism\, most recently POETRY AGAINST ALL (2020)\, and the translator of several books of poetry\, including works by Aase Berg\, Ann Jäderlund\, Helena Boberg and Kim Yideum. His translation of Eva Kristina Olsson’s The Angelgreen Sacrament is forthcoming from Black Square Editions. His poems\, translations and critical writings have appeared in a wide array of journals in the US and abroad\, including Fence\, Lana Turner\, Spoon River Review\, Modern Poetry in Translation (UK)\, Kritiker (Denmark) and Lyrikvännen (Sweden). He is an associate professor in the English Department at the University of Notre Dame and\, together with Joyelle McSweeney\, edits Action Books. \nKatrine Øgaard Jensen is a writer and translator from the Danish. She is a recipient of several fellowships and awards\, including the Danish Arts Foundation’s ‘Young Artistic Elite’ Fellowship in 2020 as well as the 2018 National Translation Award in Poetry for her translation of Ursula Andkjær Olsen’s book-length poem\, Third-Millennium Heart (Broken Dimanche Press/Action Books 2017). She teaches creative writing and literary translation at Columbia University\, where she served as Acting Director of LTAC (Literary Translation at Columbia) from 2019-2020. \nUrsula Andkjær Olsen made her literary debut in 2000 and has since published nine collections of poetry and one novel\, in addition to several dramatic texts and libretti for operas such as Danish composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s Sol går op\, sol går ned\, and composer Peter Bruun’s Miki Alone\, which was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2008. Olsen has received numerous awards for her work\, including the Danish Arts Foundation’s Award of Distinction in 2017\, the 2012 Montanaprisen award for Det 3. årtusindes hjerte (Third-Millennium Heart\, Broken Dimanche Press/Action Books 2017)\, and the 2015 Danish Critics Prize for Literature for Udgående fartøj (Outgoing Vessel\, Action Books 2021). Her latest poetry collection\, Mit Smykkeskrin (My Jewel Box) is currently a finalist for the 2021 Nordic Council Literature Prize. Since 2019\, Olsen has served as head of The Danish Academy of Creative Writing.  \nAbout the Moderator\nPaul Cunningham is the author of the The House of the Tree of Sores (Schism2 Press\, 2020) and his latest chapbook is The Inmost (Carrion Bloom Books\, 2020). Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The ninth session of the series from May 7-13 features the film Run Uje Run /Spring Uje Spring (Sweden\, 2020; dir. Henrik Schyffert). \nThe autobiographical story of Uje Brandelius\, a family father\, radio host and keyboard player in his pop band Doktor Kosmos\, Run Uje Run stars Uje and his family in their initially harmonious and ordinary suburban life outside Stockholm: where family dinners\, homework\, negotiation on drop-offs to the kindergarten\, and his daughter’s chess and fencing training are their main concerns. But Uje finds himself faced with a life-changing crisis upon learning that he has Parkinson’s disease — which he at first keeps as a secret\, while also reflecting on many of the the big questions in life. As he starts to put himself around people and situations he would not otherwise be in\, taking chances that end in embarrassment and unexpected comedy\, his unusual behavior sparks conflicts at home and at work. \nA warm comedy where everyday scenes and pop music are woven together against the backdrop of heavier future prospects\, Run Uje Run is about the turns that life takes after being diagnosed with a disease; what you have to catch up to in life\, and what you do not. Special guest Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz (Scandinavian American Theater Company) will introduce Beskow’s world of beautiful illustrations and children’s literature\, which Swedish children have grown up with for over 100 years\, and have since made the author known internationally as the “Beatrix Potter” of Sweden. As a young child Beskow would spend hours drawing trees and flowers in spring and summer\, gaining a wide knowledge of plants and flowers that she later carried through to her illustrations\, while retaining a child’s pure and wondrous view of nature. In this event\, translator Michael Favala Goldman and authors Morten Høi Jensen (A Difficult Death)\, Rachel Kushner (The Mars Room)\, and Ben Lerner (The Topeka School) will discuss this courageous and honest trilogy from literary icon Tove Ditlevsen\, a pioneer in the field of genre-bending confessional writing\, explores themes of family\, sex\, motherhood\, abortion\, addiction\, and being an artist. \nTove Ditlevsen is today celebrated as one of the most important and unique voices in 20th-century Danish literature. Born in a working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen in 1917\, Ditlevsen became famous for her poetry while still a teenager\, and went on to write novels\, stories and memoirs before committing suicide in 1976. Having been dismissed by the critical establishment in her lifetime as a working-class\, female writer\, she is now being rediscovered and championed as one of Denmark’s most important modern authors\, with “Tove fever” gripping readers\, and  The Copenhagen Trilogy (1969–71) is her acknowledged masterpiece. \nChildhood tells the story of a misfit child’s single-minded determination to become a poet; Youth describes her early experiences of sex\, work\, and independence. Dependency picks up the story as the narrator embarks on the first of her four marriages and goes on to describe her horrible descent into drug addiction\, enabled by her sinister\, gaslighting doctor-husband. Throughout\, the narrator grapples with the tension between her vocation as a writer and her competing roles as daughter\, wife\, mother\, and drug addict\, and she writes about female experience and identity in a way that feels very fresh and pertinent to today’s discussions around feminism. \nDitlevsen’s trilogy is remarkable for its intensity and its immersive depiction of a world of complex female friendships\, family and growing up―in this sense\, it’s Copenhagen’s answer to Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels. She can also be seen as a spiritual forerunner of confessional writers like Karl Ove Knausgaard\, Annie Ernaux\, Rachel Cusk and Deborah Levy. Partnering with the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) at New York University School of Professional Studies reinforces this link as part of Scandinavia House’s mission. NYU CALA offers courses in twenty languages including Danish\, Norwegian and Swedish. Finnish and Icelandic can be offered upon request. Whether supporting Scandinavia House members in connecting with their roots through learning the language of their ancestors or family members\, deepening New Yorkers’ cultural understanding\, or facilitating travel through competence in other languages\, courses encourage exploration. \nThe courses are offered on a semester basis. Levels range from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The department has the capacity to open high levels and special sections should there be a demand for such. \nCALA is a national leader in foreign language instruction and all its instructors are experienced in teaching their respective languages to adults. \n\n\n\n\nRegister
