Films in the second session of the series from the week February 26 through March 4 are Maria’s Paradise /Marian paratiisi (Finland\, 2019; dir. Zaida Bergroth) and The Reformist — A Female Imam /Reformisten (Denmark\, 2019; dir. Marie Skovgard). \nIn Maria’s Paradise /Marian paratiisi\, orphaned at a young age\, Salome is among the many devoted followers of Maria Åkerblom\, a charismatic seer who claims that God visits her in her dreams. Living in a commune in a rural farmhouse\, where she spends her days looking after the younger children in the cult\, Salome has also never experienced life outside of their sheltered existence. But when one day she accompanies Maria on a trip to town\, Salome meets Malin\, an irreverent and cynical street girl who shares Salome’s motherless background\, and they develop a friendship that brings Malin to the commune. But when Malin quickly sees through Maria’s ruse\, Salome is inspired to question her leader’s teachings for the very first time. An intense\, intelligent\, and often chilling study of cults based on a scandal that took place in Finland in the 1920s\, Maria’s Paradise holds up a not-so-distant mirror to our own time\, reminding us that demagoguery — whether religious\, political\, or often a twisted combination of the two — is still very much with us. Aiming to confront and challenge the fear surrounding Islam\, while calling for a new feminist agenda\, Khankan and fellow female imam Saliha Marie Fetteh opened the Mariam mosque in Copenhagen in 2016. For more than three years\, Danish director Marie Skovgard followed Khankan as she argued to reform the patriarchal interpretations of the Qu’ran\, confronting both Islamophobia and Islamic conservatism to champion that idea that the leadership of religious societies should be governed by the wisest and most knowledgeable\, regardless of gender. In creating a space to empower women in the community\, an encouraging alternate religious interpretations\, Sherin and her supporters hope to inspire change. “This well-crafted film is never less than involving and thought-provoking” (Screen Daily). A spatial and product designer\, Kuitunen has also created several curated exhibitions\, and will be one of the three artists on view in the studio exhibition Between Us at Amos Rex this spring. Through his haptic work creating handmade art and design objects\, Tero wants to find something that moves and touches people; materials and colors are often his biggest inspiration when starting a new design project. \nDuring the studio visit\, we will also learn how to make a woven wall hanging with paper yarn and craft mesh in a craft workshop! This simple but impressive technique Tero has lately applied to his design work blurs the line between art and design.

Its point of departure is a play by Swedish writer Stig Dagerman set in postwar France\, when French manhood had been badly bruised by the Nazi occupation\, and was being restored through false narratives and myth-making about French courage.

On view beginning March 4 through scandinaviahouse.org\, Conversations with a Shipwreck is a unique collaboration by two award-winning artists inspired by a mysterious vessel that was both destroyed and preserved by catastrophe. In tonight’s celebration\, artists Joan Wickersham and Adam Davies will be joined in conversation with author Darcy Frey (Director of Creative Writing\, Harvard University) to discuss the exhibition and the works on view\, as well as the enigmatic artifact that it explores. \nOn view in a unique interactive platform through June 5\, Conversations with a Shipwreck presents poems by Wickersham and large-format photographs by Davies\, accompanied by short durational video and audio\, and responds to the legendary warship — which sank only minutes into her maiden voyage — exploring themes of memory and oblivion\, technological triumph and fiasco\, permanence and impermanence\, mortality and time.

DESCRIPTION:TUE—March 9—7 PM ET \n*The conversation will be accompanied by virtual cinema screenings of The Making of a Man.* \nAmerican-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual conversation between filmmaker Lo Dagerman and author Mark Greene on “Masculinity and Culture”\, moderated by Benjamin Mier-Cruz on March 9. \nImmediately following WWII\, a young Swedish journalist\, Stig Dagerman\, is sent into war-torn Europe. He writes a path-breaking travelogue from the ruins of Germany\, and is in 1947 dispatched to Paris. French manhood had been humiliated by the Nazi occupation\, and it’s now being restored through false narratives and myth-making about manly courage. Inspired by people he meets\, Dagerman pens the play Marty’s Shadow\, about a young man who becomes a victim of rampant toxic masculinity. \nIn 2017\, Stig Dagerman’s play opened at the August Strindberg Repertory Theater in New York. In her documentary The Making of a Man\, filmmaker Lo Dagerman traces her father’s journey in France in the 1940s and interviews the director and cast of the New York production\, discovering that the young actor playing the lead in Marty’s Shadow has his own very personal insight into toxic masculinity. Rather than being dated\, the play very much resonates in the current United States. \nLo Dagerman will be joined by Mark Greene\, whose book The Little #MeToo Book for Men (ThinkPlay Partners\, 2018) was written as part of a movement to help change how contemporary culture conditions boys and men. Exploring how man box culture contributes directly to economic and sexual violence against women\, the book has been hailed as “nothing short of a blueprint for men’s liberation.” During their conversation\, Dagerman and Greene will discuss the predicament of boys and young men in the culture that shapes them. What values drive male socialization today? What is dominance-based male box culture? What is toxic masculinity and how can men withstand pressure to conform? What is the role of women in promoting toxic ideals? And is it really possible that these things happen all around us every day? Two of the seven directors who created the film — Reetta Aalto (Boudoir) & Alli Haapasalo (No Big Deal) will discuss the film as well as the anthology series\, which consists of Force of Habit as well as other short films and campaigns created by 15 filmmakers\, artists\, researchers and social influencers.
