SUMMARY:SUMMERLIGHT AND THEN COMES THE NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:“Adalsteins’ eye for detail and the picture’s persuasive sense of place and of community carries us along for the leisurely\, meandering ride” (ScreenDaily). \nOn September 18\, join us for a screening of Summerlight and Then Comes the Night\, based on the popular novel by Icelandic author Jón Kalman Stefánsson. *The screening will be followed by a panel with Stefánsson\, film director Elfar Adalsteins\, and actress Anna Maria Pitt\, moderated by author Sigridur Hagalin Bjornsdottir* \nThis little Icelandic village is brimming with stories\, and if you listen closely\, it might tell you a few tales. Perhaps the one about the prominent businessman who dreams in Latin and sacrifices a promising career for astronomy and old books. Or perhaps you’ll hear the one about the policeman’s son\, a sensitive boy who paints and carves birds and dreams of being an artist. Or maybe the one about the wild\, open-air sex with explosive consequences. Or the one about the big rock that can break the finely woven thread running between life and death… Starring Heida Reed\, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson\, Svandis Dora Einarsdottir\, and others\, Summerlight and Then Comes the Night (Sumarljós og svo kemur nóttin\, dir. Elfar Adalsteins\, Iceland/Belgium/Sweden\, 2022) takes us on an intimate journey through a small town with great magic. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:HACKING HATE | SCREENING & FILM TALK WITH SIMON KLOSE
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, September 20 for a special screening and film talk on Hacking Hate\, Simon Klose’s kinetic and socially-pressing documentary following award-winning Swedish journalist My Vingren as she goes undercover online to expose a network of neo-Nazis and far-right organizations fostering hate speech and extremism on a global scale. \nSocial media has become a major vehicle for spreading hate speech and a safe harbor for authoritarian agendas. With the U.S. elections on the doorstep\, this screening of Hacking Hate is essential to understand the reasons for the rise of hateful content and disinformation as well as ways to hold social media companies accountable for their role in proliferating hate online. This event is a special impact screening co-hosted by Think-Film Impact Production and includes a post-screening Q&A with director Simon Klose. \nWinner of Best Documentary Feature at Tribeca Film Festival. “Hacking Hate provides a bracing insider’s look at the grossness that proliferates throughout [social media’s] right-wing regions” (Nick Schager\, The Daily Beast). \nRegister

SUMMARY:NO SHIP SETS OUT TO BE A SHIPWRECK | AUTHOR PANEL
DESCRIPTION:On October 8\, join us for a discussion with Joan Wickersham and Adam Davies to celebrate the release of Wickersham’s No Ship Sets Out To Be a Shipwreck\, a poetic and philosophical meditation inspired by the Swedish warship Vasa\, out now from Eastover Press! \nLaunched on August 10\, 1628\, the Swedish warship Vasa sank only minutes into its maiden voyage\, and lay forgotten underwater until it was found and raised more than 300 years later. In 2021\, ASF Fellows Joan Wickersham and Adam Davies created Scandinavia House’s first-ever digital art and literary exhibition\, Conversations With a Shipwreck\, which responded to the legendary ship through presentations of Wickersham’s poems and Davies’ photography\, exploring themes of memory and oblivion\, permanence and impermanence\, mortality and time. \nNo Ship Sets Out To Be A Shipwreck is a collection of essays and poems that are contemplative\, strange\, passionate\, funny\, and haunting that is and isn’t about a ship—a personal yet universal reckoning with mortality\, and the question of what vanishes and what endures. In today’s program\, Davies will present his photography of the Vasa followed by readings from Wickersham from the new book. Last\, they will discuss their work with the Vasa in a conversation moderated by writer\, editor\, and translator Kira Josefsson. \nRegister

SUMMARY:NO OTHER LAND
DESCRIPTION:On October 14\, see No Other Land\, a Norwegian-produced\, vérité-style documentary by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four directors. *A film talk and Q&A follows the screening with co-directors Basel Adra\, Yuval Abraham\, and Rachel Szor.* \nBasel Adra\, a Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta\, has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by Israeli occupation since childhood. Basel documents the gradual erasure of Masafer Yatta as soldiers destroy the homes of families — the largest single act of forced transfer carried out in the occupied West Bank. After he crosses paths with Yuval Abraham\, a young Israeli journalist\, the two spend half a decade fighting the expulsion. Their complex bond is haunted by the extreme inequality between them: Basel lives under a brutal military occupation\, and Yuval is unrestricted and free. Created during the darkest\, most terrifying times in the region\, No Other Land was filmed by Basel and Yuval alongside two fellow activists — Isareli Rachel Szor and Palestinian Hamdan Ballal. The film is an act of creative resistance to Apartheid and a search for a path towards equality and justice. (Norway & Palestine\, 2024). \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:WHAT KINGDOM | NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! On October 15 we’ll be discussing Danish author Fine Gråbøl’s What Kingdom\, out now in translation by Martin Aitken from Archipelago. \nFine Gråbøl’s narrator dreams of furniture flickering to life; a chair that greets you; shiny tiles that follow a peculiar grammar; or a bookshelf that can be thrown on like an apron. Living in a temporary psychiatric care unit for young people in Copenhagen\, she practices daily routines that take on the urgency of survival (peeling a carrot\, drinking prune juice\, listening through thin walls)\, and is obsessed with the way items rise up out of their thingness\, assuming personalities and private motives. A thoughtful critique on governmental treatment of the mentally ill\, What Kingdom parses the culpability of psychiatric institutions\, and poignantly explores the smallest meeting points between people — whether a pair of hands dyeing another’s hair\, or removing the acupuncture needles. \nRegister

SUMMARY:HANDLING THE UNDEAD
DESCRIPTION:On October 16\, join us for a screening of the Norwegian zombie thriller Handling the Undead\, a “meditative\, mind-shattering experience that gets under your skin” (Fort Worth Report) adapted from the 2005 novel by Let the Right One In author John Ajvide Lindqvist. \nOn a hot summer day in Oslo\, the dead mysteriously awaken\, and three families are thrown into chaos when their deceased loved ones come back to them. Who are they\, and what do they want? A family is faced with the mother’s reawakening before they have even mourned her death after a car accident; an elderly woman gets the love of her life back the same day she has buried her; a grandfather rescues his grandchild from the gravesite in a desperate attempt to get his daughter out of her depression. Handling the Undead is a drama with elements of horror about three families\, a story about grief and loss\, but also about hope and understanding of what we can’t comprehend or control. \n“Handling the Undead … eschews any of the practical questions\, but with a more humanist intent: to lean single-mindedly into its characters’ emotions — and also its eerie mythical resonance” (Alissa Wilkinson\, New York Times) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:YOUR ABSENCE IS DARKNESS | BOOK TALK WITH JÓN KALMAN STEFÁNSSON
DESCRIPTION:On October 22\, join us for a conversation with award-winning Icelandic novelist Jón Kalman Stefánsson (Summerlight) on his new novel\, Your Absence Is Darkness\, a spellbinding saga about the inhabitants of a rural community on the Snæfellsnes peninsula\, out now in translation by Philip Roughton from Biblioasis! \nA man comes to awareness in a cold church in the Icelandic countryside\, not knowing who he is\, why he’s there or how he arrived\, with a stranger staring mockingly from a few pews back. Startled by the man’s cryptic questions\, he leaves—and plunges into a history spanning centuries. A city girl is drawn to the fjords by the memory of a blue-eyed gaze\, and a generation earlier\, a farmer’s wife writes an essay about earthworms that changes the course of lives. A pastor who writes letters to dead poets falls in love with a faraway stranger\, and a rock musician\, plagued by cosmic loneliness\, discovers that his past has been a lie. Faced with the violence of fate and the effects of choices\,  each discovers the cost of following the magnetic needle of the heart. \nIncandescent and elemental\, hope-filled and humane\, Your Absence Is Darkness is a comedy about mortality\, music\, and the strange salve of time. \nRegister

SUMMARY:MY HOOD: SOUTHSIDE
DESCRIPTION:On October 25th\, join us for a special screening of the documentary My Hood: Southside (Mana rajons: Pietinis; dir. Julija Juknaitė\, Lithuania\, 2024)\, followed by an informal discussion with the film crew! The event will also feature a special appearance by members of Colours of Bubbles\, a cinematographic rock band\, who will introduce their music and share their personal connections to Pietinis\, a southside neighborhood of the biggest town in Northern Lithuania. \nOnce considered a “wild” neighborhood\, Pietinis has recently experienced a cultural awakening\, partly inspired by Rimantas Kmita’s celebrated novel Pietinia Kronikas (Southside Chronicles). For the first time\, the people of Šiauliai are embracing their unique identity\, with newfound pride in their roots\, contributing to what is now being called the “Šiauliai phenomenon.” My Hood: Southside\, an engaging and vibrant documentary by J. Juknaitė\, offers a unique perspective on the now-renowned residential district of Šiauliai. As a native of Pietinis\, the director explores the neighborhood’s identity through its history\, architecture\, archival footage\, and people. The film draws attention to an important issue—the legacy of Soviet-era residential areas and the pressing need for revitalization. This grassroots initiative\, led by residents and creators\, opens broader discussions about the neighborhood’s future. \nRegister

SUMMARY:THE MOOSE PARADOX & THE BEAVER THEORY | NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! On November 5\, we’ll be discussing the two final books of Finnish author Antti Tuomainen’s Rabbit Factor Trilogy\, The Moose Paradox and The Beaver Theory. \nAntti Tuomainen’s The Rabbit Factor first introduced us to Henri Koskinen\, an order-obsessed insurance mathematician whose inheritance of YouMeFun park led him inadvertently into a life of crime. In The Moose Paradox\, Henri has finally settled things down at the adventure park\, when a man from the past appears – and turns everything upside down again. More problems arise when the park’s equipment supplier is taken over by a shady trio\, with confusing demands. Why won’t Toy of Finland Ltd sell the new Moose Chute to Henri? \nIn The Beaver Theory\, Henri’s romance with painter Laura Helanto has now blossomed into blended family life. As he joins a group of local dads\, a competing adventure park expands its operations—and isn’t sticking to the law. Is it possible to combine the dangerous world of adventure-park business with the unpredictability of life in a blended family? In order to solve this seemingly impossible conundrum\, Henri must step far beyond the mathematical precision of his comfort zone\, with hair-raising results. \nWarmly funny\, quirky\, and alternately touching and nail-biting\, The Rabbit Factor Trilogy has been hailed as “a triumph\, a joyous\, feel-good antidote to troubled times” (Kevin Wignall) and “Finland’s greatest export” (M.J. Arlidge). \nRegister
