Moreover\, she also finds out how opposing the beliefs are of the people she loves most. An exciting coming-of-age story about finding one’s own identity\, truth and loyalty\, the film looks at the choices a girl had to make from a very young age\, before getting wiser and finding the courage to speak out. \n“A powerful look at [Burkovska-Jacobsen’s] experience growing up under Soviet rule and how that political climate impacted her own coming of age”—Animation Magazine \n  \nLife After Death (Finland\, 2020; dir. Klaus Härö). 80 min. In Swedish & Finnish with English subtitles.\nSee the trailer. \nNisse’s wife Leila has just died\, but he has mourned enough\, with only some practical arrangements left to do. But despite these wishes\, he begins to understand that he’s not the only one with the right to say goodbye. A tragicomic film about an older man who manages to push the people around him away when he would need them the most\, the film is also humorous in tone as the characters’ find difficulty in understanding one another. Life After Death is the first autobiographical film by Klaus Härö\, and his first comedy. \n \nDummy/Atkūrimas (Lithuania\, 2020; dir. Laurynas Bareiša). 13 min. In Lithuanian with English subtitles. \nUsing a faceless doll\, a criminal reenacts a brutal crime that took place in the woods. Made by Baltic Film\, Media\, Arts and Communication School students\, My Dear Corpses was a gold medal winner at the Student Academy Awards. \n \nThe Kicksled Choir/Sparkekoret (Norway 2020; dir. Torfinn Iversen). 18 min. In Norwegian with English subtitles.\nSee a Virtual Film Talk with Julia Andersen\, Torfinn Iversen\, & Benoni Brox Krane. \nTen-year-old Gabriel loves to sing and has one desire: to sing in the local choir\, which rides kick-sleds through the snowy landscape of Northern Norway\, and is known for their kindness and charity towards the village refugees. But when Gabriel’s father gets into a fight with one of the local refugees\, Gabriel’s quest to join The Kicksled Choir becomes challenging. Winner of the 2020 TIFF Junior — Tromsø International Children’s Film Festival Audience Award; the 2020 Chicago International Children’s Film Festival Professional Jury’s Prize for Best Live-Action Short\, and other awards. \n \nNjuokčamat/The Tongues (Norway 2019; dir. Eeva Mägi). 24 min. In Estonian and English with English subtitles.\n \nFor the men living in the Põdra village between sea and forest\, the only one to play with is a bottle demon: Vodka Spirit. Villi\, the only survivor of his group of friends (Urmas\, Kalju\, Heints and Väints)\, tells their stories and how they ended up being tricked by that spirit\, taking us on a journey through his village\, where the houses of his friends and protective old trees live on as if nothing had happened. And if everyone else is dead\, how is Villi still alive? The Weight of All the Beauty is a poetical documentary about men who are full of beauty\, love and vitality but also loneliness. SUMMARY:The Women I Think About at Night by Mia Kankimäki
DESCRIPTION:TUE—February 9—6 PM\, free \n**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n  \nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn February 9\, we’ll be discussing the book The Women I Think About at Night by Mia Kankimäki\, who joined us last month for a book talk on the novel with moderator Heli Sirviö\, available to stream here. \nBored with her life and feeling stuck in her mid-40s\, Mia Kankimäki decided to leave her job\, sell her apartment\, and travel the world to follow the paths of  female explorers and artists from history who inspired her. From Tanzania and Kenya\, she sought out the location where Karen Blixen of Out of Africa lived in the 1920s;  in Japan\, Mia attempted to cure her depression while researching famed contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama\, who has voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital for decades. In Italy\, Mia searched for the works of forgotten Renaissance women painters of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence\, finally finding  her heroines in the portraits of Sofonisba Anguissola\, Lavinia Fontana\, and Artemisia Gentileschi. If these women could make it in the world hundreds of years ago\, why can’t Mia? \nThe Women I Think About at Night is part travelogue and part thrilling exploration of the lost women adventurers of history who defied expectations in order to see—and change—the world.

SUMMARY:The Deposit & Gods of Molenbeek — New Nordic Virtual Cinema Week 1
DESCRIPTION:FRI—February 12 through THU—February 18\nFilm tickets $13 ($8 ASF Members)\nDouble-feature pass $20 ($12 ASF Members)\n**Members will receive an email from ASF with their discount code for all films.** \nBeginning the weekend of February 12\, New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House returns in a virtual format! Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. Opening the series on the week of February 12 through February 18 are the films The Deposit /Tryggð (Iceland\, 2019; dir. Ásthildur Kjartansdóttir) and Gods of Molenbeek /Aatos ja amine (Finland\, 2019; dir. Reetta Huhtanen) \nThe Deposit /Tryggð follows Icelandic journalist Gisella\, who is on the verge of bankruptcy\, having quit her steady job in order to write more hard-hitting stories as a freelancer while struggling with debt. After an assignment on Reykjavík’s housing crisis puts her into contact with two immigrant women squatting in a nearby estate — Abeba and her daughter Luna\, from Uganda\, and Marisol\, from Colombia — she decides to rent them two of the spare bedrooms in her house. What begins as a warm and hospitable arrangement for all soon begins to develop tensions\, particularly as Gisella increasingly inserts herself in her new tenants’ lives; and as suspicions from each side begin to escalate\, a power struggle develops that could have disastrous consequences.  Based on the bestselling novel of Auður Jónsdóttir\, The Deposit is a suspenseful psychological drama exploring the perils of cultural isolation\, acclaimed as “a compelling psychological drama” (Cineurope). Directed by Ásthildur Kjartansdóttir (110 minutes. In Icelandic and Swahili with English subtitles. \nIn director Reetta Huhtanen’s documentary Gods of Molenbeek /Aatos ja amine\, the Molenbeek-Saint-Jean district of Brussels is widely known as a likely jihadi capital. But to six-year-old Aatons and Amine\, it’s a familiar home where they listen to spiders\, discover black holes\, and argue over who will get to steer the flying carpet that will take them to the lands of their ancestors. It’s also a place where\, amid a backdrop of suicide bombings and police patrols\, they must ponder bigger existential questions about religion and higher power. Aatos wants a god of his own; Amine already has Allah; and their friend Flo thinks that people who believe in God have gone crazy.  In this child’s-eye portrait\, Huhtanen captures the refreshing clarity with which the kids strip spirituality down to its basic principles and question knowledge itself\, while using make-believe to make sense of the senseless: “The filmmaker has cleverly made a film that puts the magic of childhood in the foreground”—Tue Steen Müller\, Filmkommentaren. Directed by Reetta Huhtanen (73 minutes. In French/Finnish/Arabic/Spanish with English subtitles.) \n  \nFestival films will be available to ticket holders all over the U.S. Each session is limited to 250 tickets in an effort to preserve the intimate and communal experience. The sessions will take place over seven days (Friday — Thursday)\, with all films available for viewing on a virtual cinema screening platform throughout this period. To download viewing instructions and an FAQ\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Talk — The Memory Theater With Karin Tidbeck & Sara Lefkowitz
DESCRIPTION:TUE—February 16—2 PM ET \n*This program will take place as a virtual event* \nOn February 16\, Swedish author Karin Tidbeck (of Amatka and Jagannath) joins us for a book talk on The Memory Theater\, available beginning today from Pantheon Books. With moderator Sara Lefkowitz\, she’ll discuss her new novel\, a fantastical tour de force about friendship\, interdimensional theater\, and a magical place where no one ages — except the young. \nIn a world just parallel to ours exists a mystical realm known only as the Gardens. It’s a place where feasts never end\, games of croquet have devastating consequences\, and teenagers are punished for growing up. For a select group of Masters\, it’s a decadent paradise where time stands still. But for those who serve them\, it’s a slow torture where their lives can be ended in a blink. In a bid to escape before their youth betrays them\, Dora and Thistle–best friends and confidants–set out on a remarkable journey through time and space. Traveling between their world and ours\, they hunt for the one person who can grant them freedom. Along the way\, they encounter a mysterious traveler who trades in favors and never forgets debts\, a crossroads at the center of the universe\, our own world on the brink of war\, and a traveling troupe of actors with the ability to unlock the fabric of reality.
