SUMMARY:COLLECTIVE — NEW YORK BALTIC FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! This year’s lineup includes Collective (Kolektīvs\, Lativa\, 2023)\, a film anthology that revolves around the participants of the Latvian Song and Dance Festival\, a cherished cultural tradition thriving in the Baltic states.  The film will screen in-person at Scandinavia House on November 10 at 8 PM and virtually from November 11-19. \nDrawing inspiration from real-life events\, this anthology features six directors\, chosen for their distinctively different artistic styles and body of work. Fervor (Degsme\, dir. Aik Karapetian) crafts a mystical tale of sacrifice within a dance ensemble. Gaismas Pils (dir. Edgars Kaupers) presents a gripping and one-of-a-kind perspective on the historic events of 1985\, focusing on the bravery of countless choir singers. The slightly farcical film Manwhore and Fish (Maukurs un zivs\, dir. Papa Chi) challenges the tradition of choirs “buying” good voices\, while Frolova’s Method (Frolovas metode\, dir. Oskars Rupenheits) takes a delightful and humorous approach\, exploring the quirky world of a young\, nervous choir conductor with shaking hands. Pigs in Buckwheat (Cūkas driķos\, dir. Marta Elīna Martinsone) offers a fresh and empathic view on what happens behind the scenes of the main dance concert\, and the vibrant and colorful Latvian musical Kristīne (dir: Mārtiņš Grauds) paints a tale of jealousy and rivalry between two choir collectives. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:REMEMBER TO BLINK — NEW YORK BALTIC FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! On November 8\, see the North American Premiere of Remember to Blink\, Austėja Urbaitė’s captivating drama exploring cultural conflicts amid the intricacies of human behavior. \nHaving adopted two Lithuanian children\, French couple Leon (Arthur Igual) and Jacqueline (Anne Azoulay)\, who live in a beautiful house in the French mountains\, enlist young Lithuanian student Gabriele (Dovile Kundrotaite) to serve as an interpreter and nanny. When the children arrive\, however\, their idyllic façade of their new family arrangement gives way to underlying tensions and cultural clashes — the couple might not be familiar with their adopted children’s origins\, leading to conflicts and misunderstandings\, and unearthing the complexities of parenthood and culture. \nDirector Austėja Urbaitė’s debut is a thought-provoking exploration of the subtle dynamics of what it means to become a family. The film skillfully unveils the characters’ multifaceted and irrational traits\, weaving a tapestry of relationships that question the boundaries of culture and identity\, and exposes a form of “Neo-colonialism” reflecting broader cultural conflicts. Urbaitė deftly employs unpredictability of her characters with nuanced performances to maintain viewer engagement\, while cinematographer Julius Sičiūnas juxtaposes the serene natural surroundings with the mounting tension within the confined household. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:MELCHIOR THE APOTHECARY: THE EXECUTIONER'S DAUGHTER — NEW YORK BALTIC FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! This year’s lineup includes the North American Premiere of the third film in the series Melchior the Apothecary\, The Executioner’s Daughter (Apteeker Melchior. Timuka tütar\, dir. Elmo Nüganen\, Estonia/Germany/Latvia/Lithuania\, 2023). The in-person screening of The Executioner’s Daughter will take place at Scandinavia House on November 11; the first two films\, Melchior the Apothecary (Apteeker Melchior\, 2022) and The Ghost (Viirastus\, 2022)\, will be available to stream virtually beginning November 10\, followed by The Executioner’s Daughter screening virtually from November 12. \nBased on Indrek Hargla’s bestselling Apothecary Melchior Estonian historical mystery book series\, Elmo Nüganen’s film trilogy follows the apothecary Melchior Wakenstede (Märten Metsaviir) as he solves crimes in medieval Tallinn. In The Executioner’s Daughter\, screenwriters Hargla\, Nüganen\, and Olle Mirme adapt events from Apothecary Melchior and the Hangman’s Daughter with new and exciting twists and turns. When Melchior’s wife Keterlyn (Gabriele Amine Ahwazian) witnesses a brutal attack\, the unknown young man is saved but has lost his memory\, and does not know who he is nor how he ended up in Tallinn. When a ring found at the scene leads Melchior to the night brotherhood\, the bizarre troupe who performed on Fair Day also raise questions; and frightening signs suggest that not only is the recovering victim still in danger\, but also Melchior and Keterlyn. At the same time\, the pope’s envoy\, known as a ruthless witch-hunter\, arrives in the city. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE POET — NEW YORK BALTIC FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! This year’s lineup includes the North American Premiere of The Poet (Poetas\, dir. Giedrius Tamoševičius & Vytautas V. Landsbergis\, Lithuania\, 2022)\, which follows the journey of a disgraced poet in post-war Lithuania who is recruited by the KGB to infiltrate a partisan group. The film will screen in-person at Scandinavia House on November 12 at 4:15 PM and virtually from November 13-19. \nA talented poet (Donatas Želvys)\, who has been expelled from the Lithuanian Soviet Writers’ Union for his anti-Soviet writings\, is recruited by the NKVD (later the KGB) in post-war Lithuania\, and offered a chance to regain his elite status among Soviet writers in exchange for making contact with a group of forest-dwelling partisans. As a newly appointed teacher in a remote village\, he grapples with his tarnished reputation\, as children recite his coerced verses praising the Soviet regime while wary locals test his loyalties. His life takes a profound turn when an old friend leads him to the underground bunker of the Dainava resistance platoon\, where he’s tasked with writing hopeful verses to inspire the oppressed. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD — NEW YORK BALTIC FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:*THIS SCREENING IS NOW SOLD OUT* \nThe 6th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! This year’s lineup includes Anna Hints’s poignant documentary Smoke Sauna Sisterhood\, which has been selected as Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. The film will screen in-person only at Scandinavia House on November 12 at 7 PM. \nSmoke Sauna Sisterhood intimately delves into the cultural tradition of Vana-Võromaa’s smoke saunas in South Estonia (which are included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list) and how they are unique spaces for healing and community. The film draws inspiration from the smoke saunas’ historical role in childbirth\, where women gather to share secrets\, connecting family and friends to cleanse the body and — more importantly — the soul\, inside a place of peace of contemplation.

SUMMARY:GODLAND: SCREENING & FILM TALK WITH HLYNUR PÁLMASON
DESCRIPTION:“Absolutely breathtaking…both terrifying and beautiful” (Austin Chronicle) — join us for a special screening of the stunning psychological epic Godland (Iceland\, 2022) with director Hlynur Pálmason on November 15! Returning this November and December\, the Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series features screenings of films chosen by the Nordic & Baltic countries to compete for the Oscar nomination for the Best International Feature Film\, including this year’s candidate for Iceland. A film talk and Q&A with director Hlynur Pálmason will follow the screening. \n\nReligion and brute animal nature battle one another amid the beautifully forbidding landscapes of remote late 19th-century Iceland in this drama following Danish priest Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove)\, who makes the perilous trek to the nation’s southeastern coast with the intention of establishing a church. There\, the arrogant man of God finds his resolve tested as he confronts the harsh terrain\, temptations of the flesh\, and the reality of being an intruder in an unforgiving land. What unfolds is a transfixing journey into the heart of colonial darkness attuned to both the majesty and terrifying power of the natural world.\nPurchase Tickets
