Khadar Ayderus Ahmed\, Finland/France/Germany\, 2021\, Drama)\, Somalia’s official nomination for the 94th Academy Awards. \nEach day\, in Djibouti City\, Guled (Omar Abdi) and his comrades sit outside a local hospital to wait for the next ambulance. When in luck\, they will leave with a body to bury in exchange for a little money. No one enjoys the job\, but at least they have each other\, and Guled has Nasra\, played by Somali Canadian model Yasmin Warsame in her first acting role. The gravedigger’s adored wife is dying of kidney failure and in desperate need of a transplant. In order to pay for it\, Guled would need the equivalent of what he might make in a year\, in far less time. \nThere is one other option in their home village\, but Nasra refuses to hear it. She instead chooses to savour every moment left with her beloved and their son\, Mahad\, too young — and too emotionally distant from his father — to be without her. Nasra’s worsening health drives Guled’s decision to ignore her warnings in one last act of devotion. \nIn The Gravedigger’s Wife\, Finnish Somali writer-director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed observes the long\, arduous lengths love can reach to. He studied physics at Nõo Gymnasium\, and began his life in cinema in 1976\, after graduating cum laude from the Film Directing Department of the State Institute of Cinamatography in Moscow (VGIK). Since then he has directed 13 feature films and 15 documentaries. \nHis films have successfully participated in Cannes\, Berlin\, Moscow and the Dark Nights Film Festival in Tallinn. He has also worked as a screenwriter\, theatre director and continues to supervise feature film directors in the Baltic Film\, Media and Arts School in Tallinn (BFM).

She holds a degree in music and began her career as a singer\, dancer\, and actor. Dace continued her studies at CS Martin College for Art Directing and the Latvian Academy of Arts. She has two MA degrees from the Latvian Academy of Music and Latvian Culture Academy in film direction and production\, has attended directing courses at Brighton Film School (UK) and New York Film Academy (USA)\, and has a certificate in the Meisner acting technique approach from True Acting Institute (USA). \nIn 2003\, Dace established Marana Productions and directed and produced many music videos\, TV commercials\, concerts and events. She has produced and directed several short films and documentaries and won awards and accolades for her music videos and short films.Her first feature film\, The Pit (2020) has achieved success in festivals around the world\, and won the Grand Prix awards – Tallinn Black Night Works in Progress (Estonia\, 2019)\, Nordic Film Days Lübeck (Germany\, 2020) and Baltic Debut Film Festival (Russia\, 2021). DESCRIPTION:The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography\, an exhibition organized by American-Scandinavian Foundation with The Munch Museum in Oslo that first brought the photographic work of the master painter to NYC in 2017/18 before traveling worldwide\, returns to Scandinavia House this winter with a newly conceived design and a section including vintage camera equipment alongside the release of the 2020 illustrated book The Experimental Self: The Photography of Edvard Munch\, awarded with diploma as one of The Year’s Most Beautiful Books\, 2021 by Grafill\, Norway’s National Organization for Visual Communication. \nInternationally celebrated for his paintings\, prints\, and watercolors\, Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) also took photographs. In 2017/18\, the exhibition The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography at Scandinavia House drew widespread acclaim for introducing audiences to his photographic and film work\, emphasizing the artist’s experimentalism and examining his exploration of the camera as an expressive medium. This exhibition includes Munch’s experimental portraiture of friends and family as well as his self-portraiture\, including images from what he termed his “Fatal Destiny” portfolio\, staged between 1902 and 1908. By probing and exploiting the dynamics of “faulty” practice\, such as distortion\, blurred motion\, eccentric camera angles\, and other photographic “mistakes\,” Munch photographed himself and his immediate environment in ways that rendered them poetic. In both still images and in his few forays with a hand-held moving-picture camera\, Munch not only archived images\, but invented them. As a recent Financial Times Magazine review of the works states\, “Munch’s mercurial snapshots trace the survival of an artist obsessed with loss… his photographs remain tantalisingly opaque a century on.” \nHaving since traveled to eight venues worldwide\, including Seattle\, Oslo\, Stockholm\, Fredrikssund (Denmark)\, and Bergen\, the exhibition will be returning to Scandinavia House beginning December 10 in a new iteration\, including photographic enlargements and a display of the amateur camera models similar to those he used in his work. The exhibition will also feature a “selfie station” for visitors to interact with Edvard Munch’s experimental self-portraiture\, as well as the opportunity to browse the new publication\, which includes 120 fully illustrated pages alongside essays by curator Patricia G. Berman\, Tom Gunning and MaryClaire Pappas\, available for purchase in the Shop. On loan from the Munch Museum in Oslo\, Norway\, the approximately 50 copy prints in the exhibition and a continuous projection of Munch’s films will be accompanied by contextualizing didactic panels as well as a video presentation. It has been organized by the American-Scandinavian Foundation in partnership with The Munch Museum in Oslo\, Norway. It has been supported by the Inger and William Ginsberg Support Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 7 for a special Norwegian literary evening with authors Torbjørn Ekelund & Are Kalvø! Norway is known for its dramatic and beautiful nature\, with fjords\, mountains and endless hiking trails. Norwegians love to spend time outside\, so called friluftsliv. In tonight’s event\, get to know two fantastic authors with different approaches to nature. This event takes place live at Scandinavia House and will also be streamed virtually. \nTorbjørn Ekelund is a writer\, historian and part-owner of the online magazine Harvest. His book In Praise of Paths (Greystone Books\, May 2020) takes readers on a fascinating journey from the first humans wandering across Europe\, after the last ice age\, up until present-day organized hiking trails. Woven together in narrative through philosophy\, biology\, literature\, archeology and mythology\, In Praise of Paths is about movement and residence\, migration and shortcuts; about the fascinating migratory routes of birds and animals\, and our inherent need to relocate; and also about what has been lost in an age where we all sit in offices\, and drive cars\, and navigate using GPS on our smartphones. \nCity-dweller and stand-up comedian Are Kalvø grew up right in the middle of a postcard in northwestern Norway\, surrounded by fjords and mountains that people from halfway across the globe travel to see. Yet he has never been much of an outdoorsman — once he moved to the city\, he never looked back. This was never a problem until recently\, when Kalvø began losing friends to the mountains. One day\, Kalvø realized that he did not have a single Facebook-friend who had not posted a single photo of themselves on a mountain! In fear of missing out\, he headed out to the mountains himself. His resulting adventures are compiled in the book The Hiking Book from Hell (Greystone Books\, May 2022)\, and will be the basis for his stand-up presentation today. \nTonight’s event will begin with a literary talk with Ekelund in conversation with a moderator. Next\, see a stand-up routine from Kalvø. Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On December 7\, we’ll be discussing The Pastor by award-winning Norwegian novelist Hanne Ørstavik\, who recently joined us for a virtual panel now streaming here. \nLiv\, an intense and reticent theologian\, is fascinated by words and their edges and echoes\, and researches how the language of the Bible was wielded against the indigenous Sami people during the 1800s. When she moves to a bitterly cold fishing village to to work as the church’s new pastor following the death of her dearest friend\, Kristiane\, she begins planning her sermons while studying the violent interplay of Norway’s Christian colonial past. \nBecoming acquainted with the villagers and their private tragedies\, excavating their past and her own\, Liv searches for meaning from scenes such as of Sami children gathering cloudberries and figs\, from the memory of the magical weaver woman from an Astrid Lindgren fairytale she read as a child\, or in how misstep and misunderstandings can lead to isolation and pain. \nWith each new experience and confrontation\, fresh questions about scripture and empathy and who she is arise; as she wonders how “language\, in all its plasticity\, became so stiff and unbending\,” she slowly bends it back toward her\, building her own vocabulary of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series at Scandinavia House returns this season with select in-house and virtual screenings of films chosen by the Nordic & Baltic countries to compete for the Oscar nomination for the Best International Feature Film. On December 6 at Scandinavia House\, see the Swedish documentary The Most Beautiful Boy in the World/ Världens vackraste pojke (dir. Kristian Petri & Kristina Lindstrom\, Sweden\, 2021). Following the screening\, actress Isabella Rossellini will join us with directors Kristian Petri & Kristina Lindstrom for a film Q&A. \nIn 1971 at the world premiere of Death in Venice in London\, Italian director Luchino Visconti proclaimed Björn Andrésen\, the teen star of his latest film\, “the most beautiful boy in the world.” Just 16 at the time when the film came out\, Andrésen was unprepared for instantly becoming an international celebrity. Fifty years later\, Björn looks back on his life\, in a story of a boy who was thrust to international stardom for his iconic looks and lived a life of glamour as well as heartbreak. (94 min. She has worked at SVT as a producer\, project manager\, and filmmaker. She has directed highly acclaimed documentaries about some of Sweden’s most famous names and faces\, including Astrid (2014) and Palme (with Maud Nycander\, 2012). Among others\, Lindström has been awarded The Publicists big award\, the Linné Prize\, Kristallen\, Stockholm’s Culture Prize\, and the Ikaros Award. \nKristian Petri (director) is a filmmaker\, writer\, and culture journalist with a distinctly personal voice that transcends genre and form. Petri won Best Direction at the Guldbagge Awards for his first feature film\, Between Summers (1995)\, which was selected for the prestigious Quinzaine des Realisateurs in Cannes. Many of his films\, including The Well (2005)\, Details (2003)\, and Tokyo Noise (2002) have been critically celebrated and have been nominated for and received a number of national and international awards.

DESCRIPTION:Music on Park Avenue is back! The popular series hosted by Scandinavia House and Per Tengstrand welcomes its audience back to Victor Borge Hall in the fall of 2021. In the second concert in the series\, Tengstrand will perform Beethoven’s “33 Variations over a Waltz by Diabelli.”  \nIn 1819\, the music publisher Anton Diabelli asked a large group of composers to write one variation each on a waltz. Beethoven submitted not one\, but 33\, and it is celebrated as perhaps the greatest set of piano variations next to Bach’s “Goldberg Variations.” With relentless imagination\, Beethoven turns this simple and banal theme into creations full of beauty\, drama and\, in fact\, mockery. \nDo not miss Per Tengstrand’s interpretation of one of the most important piano works in history! \n“The greatest of all piano works“—Alfred Brendel \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. He has been described by The Washington Post as “technically resplendent\, powerful\, intuitively secure\,” and by The New York Times as “a superb Swedish pianist” whose recital “was rewarding\, both for its unusual programming and for his eloquent\, technically polished performances.”Tengstrand is the subject of the acclaimed Swedish documentary The Soloist\, directed by Magnus Gertten and Stefan Berg (Sweden\, 2003)\, which was featured at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in New York. \nIn 2005 he was decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the “Litteris et Artibus” Medal for outstanding service to the arts. During the pandemic\, Per started making music documentaries which were viewed and appreciated by people all over the world. As this line of work will continue\, the documentary Beethoven and the Freedom of the Will is planned to have its world premiere at Scandinavia House in 2022.
