Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg\, this epic adventure film dramatizes Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl’s real-life 1947 expedition across the Pacific on a balsawood raft. \nNorway’s most expensive production to date\, Kon Tiki (Norway\, 2013) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards\, and was screened here at Scandinavia House as a part of our Nordic Oscar Contenders in 2013. Now\, for our 25th anniversary\, we return to Heyerdahl’s (Pål Sverre Hagen) epic gambit to prove that South Americans had settled in the Polynesian islands\, a theory that remains a matter of debate\, and to retrace their steps using only the resources available to potential pre-Columbian settlers. \nThough he himself cannot swim or sail\, he sets out on the treacherous 4\,300-nautical-mile journey across the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia aboard the small raft– the Kon Tiki\, named after the Inca sun god –along with his crew of five men (and a macaw named Lorita). DESCRIPTION:This series offers a gentle introduction to the tactile qualities of materials such as paper\, pastel\, paint\, graphite pencil\, and ink. Participants will explore the unique characteristics of various tools and surfaces\, learning simple techniques to get started and discover inspiration—whether drawn from the inner world or the world around us. The focus is on the process of making: approaching art as a meditative\, exploratory practice. Together\, we’ll experiment\, play\, and pay close attention to what unfolds on the page\, moment by moment. There are no expectations for finished pieces or specific outcomes —the class itself is the experience and the goal. Each session will close with a supportive group reflection\, where we’ll share and appreciate each other’s progress\, process\, and discoveries. \nIn this course\, students will explore and experiment with water-based colored paint and water using brushes on paper. \nThe series can be experienced as a complete progression or as individual\, standalone classes. The series continues in 2026 on Thursday\, January 15\, 2026\, with Nordic in NYC\, Established and New(er) at Scandinavia House in New York City. The panel will highlight leading architecture and design firms in New York City\, representing a unique vision while sharing a commitment to values that guide contemporary architecture. SUMMARY:SWEDISH 1.2 — ENROLLMENT OPEN
DESCRIPTION:Learn the Nordic languages in classes offered at Scandinavia House\, held in-person and virtually! This course builds upon Swedish 1.1 or its equivalent. Students will learn sentence structure in sentences with more than one verb\, placement of adverbs\, plural endings\, conjugation of adjectives\, objective and possessive pronouns\, and the past tense. Various cultural aspects will also be highlighted during the course. This class will take place as hybrid learning\, with classes offered at Scandinavia House and online via Zoom. \nThis hybrid class will be held both in-person and via Zoom; in-person attendance for the first four classes is highly recommended. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 7th\, join us for a day-long Nordic Knit-In with Scandinavia House’s veteran knitter Hilary Snell! We will provide participants with a relaxed and warm environment for beginning\, continuing or finishing up a craft of your choosing. You bring your materials and create whatever you want. Knitting\, crocheting\, painting\, drawing\, finger knitting\, embroidery\, whatever sparks your creativity— we welcome you! \nParticipants are encouraged to drop in and stay for a minute or stay for hours — and create\, create\, create — alongside other crafters.
