DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the Russian attack on Ukraine in the spring of 2022 and its humanitarian\, economic\, and political consequences\, the countries in the Nordic region have put renewed focus on security issues within an insecure Europe. In this panel moderated by Eric Einhorn (Professor Emeritus of Political Science & Adjunct Professor of Scandinavian Studies\, University of Massachusetts Amherst)\, panelists will discuss how Nordic security has shifted over the past year and issues going forward\, as well as the changes in Finland and Sweden’s neutrality stance by joining the NATO alliance. \nPanelists include Katja Creutz (Program Director of the Global Security Research Program\, Finnish Institute of International Affairs)\, August Danielson (Associate Fellow\, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) and PhD Candidate\, Uppsala University); and Hans Mouritzen (Senior Researcher of Foreign Policy and Diplomacy\, Danish Institute for International Studies). This event will take place as a Zoom webinar followed by a Q&A; the conversation will be recorded and available later to stream on our Virtual Programming page and on our YouTube channel. \nAbout the Panelists & Moderator\nKatja Creutz is Program Director of the Global Security research program at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. Her main field of expertise is international law and especially issues of responsibility\, human rights and global governance. She has also published extensively on Nordic relations in the field of foreign and security policy. Dr. Creutz holds a Doctor of Laws degree and a Master of Laws program degree from the University of Helsinki and a Master of Political Science from Åbo Akademi University. She has previously worked as Research Fellow at the Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights of the University of Helsinki. She is the author of the monograph State Responsibility in the International Legal Order: A Critical Appraisal (CUP\, 2020). \nAugust Danielson is an associate fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) and a PhD Candidate at Uppsala University. His research focuses on diplomatic practices\, EU foreign and security policy as well as visual diplomacy. He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Uppsala University and has previously worked at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He is a co-author of The Everyday Making of EU Foreign and Security Policy (2022) and his work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Common Market Studies\, Review of International Studies and Journal of International Relations and Development. \nEric S. Einhorn has been a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1971 until his retirement in 2009\, including 6 ½ years as department chair. After his undergraduate studies in international relations at the University of Pennsylvania he earned a PhD in political science at Harvard University.  His teaching and research bridge the comparative and foreign policy fields with a focus on western Europe and the United States and especially the Nordic region.  His most recent work has been in comparative political economy. Professor Einhorn has traveled and studied extensively throughout western Europe and especially the Nordic regions. Currently he is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Adjunct Professor of Scandinavian Studies at UMass Amherst and continues his research and area studies activities. \nHans Mouritzen is a Senior Researcher of Foreign Policy and Diplomacy at the Danish Institute for International Studies. He has developed theory on the autonomy of international organizations; small states’ foreign policy in a spatial context (‘constellation theory’); how external danger affects domestic cohesion; and how historical memory impacts foreign policy decisions (‘presence of the past’ theory). He is co-editor of Danish Foreign Policy Review and participates in FSPS projects.

It traveled the world bringing home some awards and received Jussi-nominations (Finnish Film Awards) for best film\, best directing and best screenplay\, and was given the Nordisk Film Award in 2020. \nHaapasalo wrote and directed short film Doing the Right Thing (2020) about the early stages of covid-19 pandemic for HBO Nordic’s series At Home. When news of opportunities reach the devoutly Lutheran Kristina and her husband Karl Oskar (Gustaf Skarsgård)\, hardships and tragedy at home lead them to set sail from Småland\, alongside fellow passengers who challenge Kristina’s views while laying the foundations of friendship for the days to come. When they land in New York\, new perils face them on their trek across the rugged landscape of the Midwest — ranging from schemes of various locals to the dangers of childrearing on the frontier. But as Kristina and Karl-Oskar reach the wilds of Minnesota\, they learn to carve out a new life for themselves\, as well as opportunities to come. \nThe first adaptation of Moberg’s novels from the perspective of Kristina\, The Emigrants captures the emotional turmoil of setting out for a new life abroad in 19th-century America. \n \nAbout the Director\nErik Poppe was born in Oslo\, Norway in 1960. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with author and ASF Fellow Ryan Thomas Skinner on his new book Afro-Sweden: Becoming Black in a Color-Blind Country\, out September 22 from University of Minnesota Press! \nContemporary Sweden is a country with a worldwide progressive reputation\, despite an undeniable tradition of racism within its borders. In the face of this contradiction of culture and history\, Afro-Swedes have emerged as a vibrant demographic presence\, from generations of diasporic movement\, migration\, and homemaking. In Afro-Sweden\, Ryan Thomas Skinner (Associate Professor of Music and African-American Studies\, Ohio State University) uses oral histories\, archival research\, ethnography\, and textual analysis to explore the history and culture of this diverse and growing Afro-European community. \nSkinner employs the conceptual themes of “remembering” and “renaissance” to illuminate the history and culture of the Afro-Swedish community\, drawing on the rich theoretical traditions of the African and Black diaspora. Remembering fosters a sustained meditation on Afro-Swedish social history\, while Renaissance indexes a thriving Afro-Swedish public culture. Together\, these concepts illuminate significant existential modes of Afro-Swedish being and becoming\, invested in and contributing to the work of global Black studies. \nThe first scholarly monograph in English to focus specifically on the African and Black diaspora in Sweden\, Afro-Sweden emphasizes the voices\, experiences\, practices\, knowledge\, and ideas of these communities. Its rigorously interdisciplinary approach to understanding diasporic communities is essential to contemporary conversations around such issues as the status and identity of racialized populations in Europe and the international impact of Black Lives Matter. SUMMARY:RIT: The Poetry of Olav H. Hauge
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a musical program featuring the poetry of Norwegian poet Olav H. Hauge! “RIT” is performed by Norwegian artists Reidun Horvei (voice) and Inger-Kristine Riber (keyboard and composition). The poems in this song cycle follow the seasons of the year while they mark developments in Hauge’s poetry and in his personal life. \nOlav H. Hauge enjoyed both critical and popular success during his lifetime (1908-1994) and since his death his stature has only grown. Hauge’s iconic poem “Det er den draumen” (“This is the Dream”) was recently designated as Norway’s national poem. \nAn introduction to the program and the poet\, Olav H. Hauge\, will be given by Katherine Hanson. Hanson collaborated with Horvei and Riber on the creation of “RIT” which had its premiere at the Ulvik Poetry Festival September 5\, 2021. Over the following six weeks “RIT” was performed 25 times throughout Western Norway. \nhttps://www.scandinaviahouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/rit_sketch-1080p-1.mp4\nAbout the Team\nReidun Horvei has worked as a professional singer in the field of classical music\, contemporary music\, and folk songs for a long time. She first encountered Hauge’s poetry in the late 70s and on several occasions performed with the poet himself. \nInger-Kristine Riber has gained international attention with her technical mastery of the piano and her poetic interpretations. She has won several prizes and awards and is regarded as one of Norway’s leading musicians. Much of her work is colored by a vision of creating new arenas for classical music and to that end she has initiated several projects\, both at home and abroad. \nKatherine Hanson lives and tends her garden in her home overlooking Puget Sound\, just north of Seattle\, Washington. Her abiding interest in Hauge’s poetry took root nearly fifty years ago when she started work on her doctoral dissertation: Nature Imagery in Olav H. Hauge’s Poetry. She has taught Norwegian and Scandinavian literature and culture to American students for just about as many years. Her publications include An Everyday Story: Norwegian Women’s Fiction and English translations of several novels by Amalie Skram\, her four marriage and two asylum novels. \nRagnhild M. Gudbrandsen is known for her acting roles in theatre and film productions as well as for directing a number of productions. She appears regularly at Den nasjonale Scene in Bergen and also has a strong connection to Det Vestnorske Teater. Her dramatization of the monologue “Babette’s Feast” enjoyed great success touring in 2018-2020. \nThomas Pihl has distinguished himself as one of Norway’s foremost artists of his generation. Since 1994 he has also been a part of New York’s art scene. He has made a name for himself at key institutions both nationally and internationally. In recent years\, in addition to his drawings and sculpture\, he has explored the monochrome\, monumental painting. Pihl is currently a professor at KMD/UiB.

Mantas Kvedaravičius\, Lithuania/France/Germany 2022\, Documentary). Mariupolis 2 is the fourth and final film by the late Mantas Kvedaravičius\, who returned to the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol earlier this year to follow his 2016 film documenting life there under attack. Embedded with people sheltering in the basement of a church\, Kvedaravičius filmed uncensored everyday life accompanied by constant shelling and the unrelenting noise of war outside. We see people sweeping the yard\, smoking\, praying\, and crying all the while\, with the Azovstal iron and steel works — where brutal fighting continued until the bitter end of the city’s collapse — looming in the distance. \nMariupolis 2 is about human resilience under unimaginable adversity. After the director’s untimely\, brutal death during the making of the film\, his fiancé Hanna Bilobrova managed to escape with the footage and his producers and collaborators have worked tirelessly to continue spreading his work\, his vision\, and his films. \nMariupolis 2 had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. \nA statement on the film from Hanna Bilobrova\, Mantas Kvedaravičius’s fiancé\, collaborator\, and creative partner: “Do you know what the most incredible thing was about Mariupol? No one feared death\, even if people thought they did. Death was already there\, and everyone wanted to die valuable. People would help each other\, even if it meant risking their lives. People would smoke outside and chat\, even if the bombs were falling. Money ceased to exist (and life was too short to recall)\, and everyone was happy with what they had\, becoming a better version of themselves. There was no past\, future\, judgment\, or talk between the lines! That was heaven in hell. That was the delicate butterfly wings touching closer. That was the smell of the naked value of death. That was the life there.” \nThe director’s first film about the city\, Mariupolis\, is available to screen online for the duration of the festival. \nThis film will only be offered as an in-person screening. Tickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nAbout the Director\nMantas Kvedaravičius (1976-2022) was a Lithuanian-born filmmaker with a degree in social anthropology from Cambridge University. His first documentary film\, Barzakh was selected to screen at numerous festivals and won several awards\, including the Amnesty International Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Berlinale in 2011.
