DESCRIPTION:Music on Park Avenue is back! The popular series hosted by Scandinavia House and Per Tengstrand welcomes its audience back to Victor Borge Hall in the fall of 2021. In the second concert in the series\, Tengstrand will perform Beethoven’s “33 Variations over a Waltz by Diabelli.”  \nIn 1819\, the music publisher Anton Diabelli asked a large group of composers to write one variation each on a waltz. Beethoven submitted not one\, but 33\, and it is celebrated as perhaps the greatest set of piano variations next to Bach’s “Goldberg Variations.” With relentless imagination\, Beethoven turns this simple and banal theme into creations full of beauty\, drama and\, in fact\, mockery. \nDo not miss Per Tengstrand’s interpretation of one of the most important piano works in history! \n“The greatest of all piano works“—Alfred Brendel \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. He has been described by The Washington Post as “technically resplendent\, powerful\, intuitively secure\,” and by The New York Times as “a superb Swedish pianist” whose recital “was rewarding\, both for its unusual programming and for his eloquent\, technically polished performances.”Tengstrand is the subject of the acclaimed Swedish documentary The Soloist\, directed by Magnus Gertten and Stefan Berg (Sweden\, 2003)\, which was featured at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in New York. \nIn 2005 he was decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the “Litteris et Artibus” Medal for outstanding service to the arts. During the pandemic\, Per started making music documentaries which were viewed and appreciated by people all over the world. As this line of work will continue\, the documentary Beethoven and the Freedom of the Will is planned to have its world premiere at Scandinavia House in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:The Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series at Scandinavia House returns this season with select in-house and virtual screenings of films chosen by the Nordic & Baltic countries to compete for this year’s Academy Awards. Screening virtually only from December 2 through December 5\, see the documentary Radiograph of a Family (dir. Firouzeh Khosrovani; Norway/Iran/Switzerland\, 2020)\, which has been submitted for Best Documentary. A virtual film Q&A will accompany the screenings; please check back here for details. \nA love story with two different beliefs and a family in the turmoil of Iran’s modern history\, director Firouzeh Khosravani’s Radiograph of a Family explores a personal history beginning with her mother’s marriage to her father in Tehran by photograph\, when he was then studying radiology in Switzerland. For her mother\, with her religious background\, living in Europe was a challenge: sin was everywhere. Her father came from a liberal and secular family and was a lover of culture\, fine arts\, classical music; her mother never understood how he could treasure a painting depicting nude bodies. Shortly after Firouzeh’s birth\, the family moved back from Switzerland back to Tehran\, after which the Revolution happened and changed everything upside down. Her mother found new reason and new identity\, an important space for herself: She became a religious activist\, school principal and did military training. Her father sat quietly in his favorite chair at home and listened to Bach. Throughout Firouzeh’s childhood\, she was forced to choose between her parents; each day\, enduring imposition from one side and acceptance from the other. (82 min. She now lives between Tehran and Rome. Her debut film\, Life Train (2004)\, is a documentary on the ‘play’ therapy provided for the traumatized children of the earthquake in Bam. \nIn 2007\, she directed Rough Cut\, a film about mutilated plastic mannequins in the shop windows of Tehran\, which won 13 international film festival awards. Her last work\, Fest of Duty\, follows two adolescent girls as they transition into adulthood\, eight years after their official Fest of Duty. He holds a PhD from University of Aarhus in arctic archaeology\, and has conducted archaeological and trans-disciplinary fieldwork primarily in Greenland across the last 30 years. He has also been responsible for or involved in a number of Arctic exhibitions displayed in Denmark\, Greenland\, and internationally. In collaboration with artist Nuka Konrad Godtfredsen\, among others\, he developed the internationally acclaimed graphic novel series “Oqaluttuaq”. He is presently involved in the large Carlsberg Foundation-sponsored project “Activating Arctic Heritage” developed in collaboration between the national museums in Nuuk and Copenhagen. \nEero Ehanti has a MA in Art History from the University of Helsinki\, a BA in conservation from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and 20 years of experience in various museum positions in Finland and abroad. Early on he specialized in conservation of cultural historical objects\, but has since then worked on research\, collections management and exhibitions of a wide range. Since 2016 he has led the conservation department at the National Museum of Finland. He also chaired the Finnish committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for six years. For Eero\, museums are a means for understanding\, communication\, and creativity. \nEeva-Kristiina Harlin is an archeologist from the University of Helsinki and osteoarchaeologist from the University of Stockholm. She is finalizing her thesis “From Repatriation to Rematriation – Sámi Heritage and the Change of Paradigm” at the University of Oulu\, Giellagas Institute (Institute for Saami Studies) in Finland. She has worked with themes such as Sámi cultural heritage\, research ethics and repatriation questions together with the Sámi society for a long time. Currently she works with the new permanent exhibition for Sámi Museum SIIDA and also with the joint repatriation exhibition between SIIDA and the National Museum of Finland. In addition to her scientific articles\, she has launched a book Ládjogahpir – Máttaráhkuid gábagahpir in 2020 together with Sámi artist Outi Pieski which presents in book form the past\, future and present stories of the Sámi horn hat — the ládjogahpir — and the rematriation of its existence\, use\, making and wearing. \nDaniel Thorleifsen is Greenlandic Inuit and\, for more than 16 years\, the Director of the Greenland National Museum and Archives\, Nunatta Katersugaasivia\, in Nuuk\, Greenland. Before joining the National Museum he was an Associate Professor in History & Head of the Department at Ilisimatusarfik\, University of Greenland. As Director of the Museum\, he oversees the 35\,000 archaeological and ethnological objects\, artifacts and human remains that were transferred from Denmark to Greenland in the late 20th and early 21st century. \nAbout the Moderator\nSally Yerkovich is ASF Director of Educational Exchange and Special Projects. A cultural anthropologist\, she has over 20 years of experience working in museums. She is the Chair of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Standing Committee on Ethics\, which often considers issues related to the restitution/repatriation of objects from museum collections.

Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \nAbout the Speakers\nKristín Eiríksdóttir is an award-winning novelist\, short story writer\, poet\, and playwright from Reykjavík\, Iceland. Her original edition of A Fist or a Heart won the Icelandic Literary Prize 2017 as well as the Icelandic Women’s Literature Prize 2018\, and was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize 2019. The novel took second place for the Icelandic Booksellers’ Prize and was selected as one of the best novels of 2017 by the Icelandic National Radio. Eiríksdóttir has published seven books and had three plays staged. Her short fiction has appeared in Best European Fiction 2011. A Fist or a Heart is her first novel to be translated into English. \nBjörn Halldórsson was born in Reykjavik\, Iceland\, in 1983. He studied English and American Literature at the University of East-Anglia in Norwich and has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow. Along with working as a writer\, translator and journalist\, he has directed panels at festivals such as the Reykjavík Literature Festival and the PEN World Voices Festival in New York.  \nHalldórsson’s short stories have been published by literary journals in Iceland and the UK and have also appeared in translation in English\, German\, Italian and Hebrew. His first book\, a short story collection titled Smáglæpir (“Misdemeanours”)\, was published in 2017. His second book\, Stol (“Loss”)\, a novel\, was published in early 2021 by Icelandic publisher Forlagið. \nLarissa Kyzer is a writer and Icelandic to English literary translator. Her translation of Kristín Eiríksdóttir’s A Fist or a Heart was awarded the American Scandinavian Foundation’s 2019 translation prize. The same year\, she was one of Princeton University’s Translators in Residence. In 2020\, Larissa cofounded Eth & Thorn\, a chapbook press dedicated to Icelandic poetry and short fiction in translation. She is co-chair of PEN America’s Translation Committee and runs the virtual Women+ in Translation reading series Jill! \nHalla Þórlaug Óskarsdóttir (b. 1988) has worked with culture in one way or the other for the past 10 years\, as a writer and a culture journalist for radio and newspapers. She’s mostly focused on literature\, visual arts and cultural analysis.  \nShe is also a writer herself\, with her most recent work being Quiet Game (2020) for which she was awarded the Maístjarnan prize for the best Icelandic poetry book published in 2020. DESCRIPTION:The Fourth Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns in 2021 as a hybrid festival with both in-person and virtual screenings on November 3-14! From November 3 through 7\, in-person screenings and events will take place at Scandinavia House in New York\, presented in accordance with new COVID-19 safety guidance and protocols. Following the success of last year’s festival\, the online version will once again be available to viewers all across the U.S. via the Elevent streaming platform November 3-14. \nOn November 7\, see The Jump (dir. Giedre Zickyte\, Lithuania\, 2021\, Documentary). It’s Thanksgiving Day\, 1970. The U.S. coast guard sets out to meet a Soviet vessel anchored just off the shore of Martha’s Vineyard for a one-day conference between the two nations set to discuss fishing rights in the Atlantic Ocean. While the talks are in full swing\, Lithuanian sailor Simas Kudirka jumps across the icy water onto the American boat in a frantic bid for freedom. To his horror\, and to the outcry of the world media\, the Americans return him to the Soviets and he is tried for treason. The event sets off a series of protests throughout the U.S. begging for his freedom. All hope seems lost\, until new information about Simas’ citizenship surfaces. Through eyewitness reports\, rare archival footage and a dramatic first-person re-enactment by now 90-year-old would-be defector Simas Kudirka\, director Giedrė Žickytė takes us on a stranger-than-fiction journey reaching all the way up to the White House. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. Žickytė graduated with a master’s degree in visual arts from Vilnius Art Academy in 2008 and is the founder of the production company MOONMAKERS. Her feature film MASTER AND TATYANA won Best Director\, Best Documentary\, Best Cinematography\, and Best Editing at the Lithuanian Film Academy Awards in 2015. \nI’M NOT FROM HERE was nominated at the 2016 European Film Academy Awards and won over a dozen other awards\, including Sesterce d’or Fondation Goblet at Visions du Reel (Switzerland). Additionally\, she produced THE EARTH IS BLUE AS AN ORANGE by Iryna Tsilyk\, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020.
