SUMMARY:Collected Works
DESCRIPTION:This January\, join us for a virtual book talk with Swedish author and psychologist Lydia Sandgren on her new book Collected Works. With moderator Emily Temple\, she’ll discuss her compelling mystery and poignant bildungsroman about love\, power\, and art—and what leads us to make the pivotal decisions that change the course of our lives. \nMartin Berg’s wife\, Cecilia\, disappeared years ago. His memories of their carefree college days seem ever out of reach\, and the intellectual curiosities that once made him the object of her desire have given way to midlife uncertainty. The methodical and quiet life he’s made for himself and his adult children couldn’t be further from the one he dreamed of in his youth\, when the manuscripts lying around his apartment were flush with promise and his ailing publishing house was still new. \nPerhaps nothing reminds Martin of these failures more than his friend Gustav Becker\, a wildly successful painter who’s returned to Gothenburg on the eve of his career-defining retrospective. Gustav\, meanwhile\, is hurting too. His obsession with Cecilia’s inexplicable disappearance had made his art hagiographic\, fixated on her image. \nWhen posters for Gustav’s retrospective plaster Cecilia’s face on major billboards across the city\, Martin’s daughter Rakel learns a haunting fact that points toward her mother’s whereabouts. She and her brother chase this clue across time\, memory\, and Europe to discover why Cecilia abandoned her family\, with the imagined hope that the question of what makes a person leave can ever be answered. \nRegistration is required. Please sign up at the link above. This event will take place as a Zoom webinar. Please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. \n“[A] sweeping and complex drama of family\, art\, and sacrifice . . . Readers will be captivated.” —Publishers Weekly  \n“A richly evocative work from a major new talent.” —Kirkus Reviews  \nAbout the Author\nLydia Sandgren is a trained psychologist and lives in Gothenburg\, Sweden. Collected Works is her debut novel. \nAbout the Moderator\nEmily Temple is the author of The Lightness (William Morrow\, 2020) and the Managing Editor at Literary Hub. She earned an MFA in fiction from the University of Virginia\, where she was the recipient of a Henfield Prize. She lives with her husband and daughter in upstate New York.

SUMMARY:A House Made of Splinters
DESCRIPTION:The Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series at Scandinavia House continues this season with a screening of the Danish documentary A House Made of Splinters (dir. Simon Lereng Wilmont\, Denmark\, 2022)\, which has now been shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature at the 95th Academy Awards. \nIn this war-worn and impoverished corner of Eastern Ukraine where addiction casts along shadow\, there sits a safe haven for children temporarily removed from their parents. A House Made of Splinters follows three kids awaiting their fate: will they go back or move on to a new home\, while as a group of dedicated social-workers create small moments of joy and respite from childhoods all but lost. \nFilmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont returns with a follow-up to his acclaimed first feature\, The Distant Barking of Dogs\, offering a unique look into how the long-term consequences of war on a society already under strain impacts the most vulnerable. His is a poignant and deeply intimate portrait of a remarkable way station filled with care\, support\, and trust for a group of kids who are in desperate need of more. \nThis screening will take place in-person at Scandinavia House in Victor Borge Hall. \n \nAbout the Director\nBorn in Copenhagen\, Denmark\, Simon Lereng Wilmont graduated as a Documentary Film Director from The National Film School of Denmark in 2009. SUMMARY:The Employees by Olga Ravn
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On January 10\, we’ll be discussing The Employees by Olga Ravn\, who discussed the novel with us in May 2021 with translator Martin Aitken. \nIn the near-distant future\, millions of kilometers from Earth\, the crew of the Six-Thousand Ship consists of those who were born\, and those who were made; those who will die\, and those who will not. When the ship takes on a number of strange objects from the planet New Discovery\, the crew is perplexed to find itself becoming deeply attached to them\, and human and humanoid employees alike start aching for the same things: warmth and intimacy; loved ones who have passed; shopping and child-rearing; our shared\, far-away Earth\, which now only persists in memory. \nGradually\, the crew members come to see their work in a new light\, and each employee is compelled to ask themselves whether they can carry on as before – and what it means to be truly living. \nStructured as a series of witness statements compiled by a workplace commission\, Ravn’s crackling prose is as chilling as it is moving\, as exhilarating as it is foreboding. Wracked by all kinds of longing\, The Employees probes into what it means to be human\, emotionally and ontologically\, while simultaneously delivering an overdue critique of a life governed by work and the logic of productivity. \n“A powerful and philosophical sci-fi experiment from a near-distant future\, exploring what it means to be human and alive.”– Børsen \nAbout the Author\nOlga Ravn (b. 1986) is a Danish novelist and poet. Her novel Celestine appeared to critical acclaim in 2015. She is also a literary critic and has written for Politiken and several other Danish publications. Alongside Johanne Lykke Holm\, she runs the feminist performance group and writing school Hekseskolen.
