SUMMARY:MUSIC FOR BLACK PIGEONS | SCREENING & DIRECTOR TALK
DESCRIPTION:From filmmakers Jørgen Leth and Andreas Koefoed\, Music for Black Pigeons is a documentary record of one film crew’s 14-year journey across North America\, Europe\, and Japan on the trail of legendary Danish jazz composer Jakob Bro. The milieu they end up in contains musicians of all generations and nationalities\, as Bill Frisell\, Lee Konitz\, Paul Motian\, Midori Takada and others make special appearances through their work with Bro. Music for Black Pigeons is a testament not only to the diverse and innovative methods of the musicians documented\, but also to the unique energy and camaraderie generated when great minds collaborate. **Director Andreas Koefoed & composer Jakob Bro will be present for a film talk & Q&A following the screening.** \nShooting in the time-honored improvisational mode of “letting the tape roll”\, Leth and Koefoed’s film is as improvisational as the artmaking process it sheds light on. Moving between hallowed recording spaces of the experimental music world in New York\, Copenhagen\, and Lugano\, the film includes interviews with fixtures of the scene like jazz saxophonist Mark Turner\, double bassist Thomas Morgan\, avant-garde jazz drummers Joey Baron and Andrew Cyrille\, trumpet player Palle Mikkelborg and many more. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:UNRULY | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:On March 13\, join us for a screening of Unruly (dir. Malou Reymann\, Denmark\, 2022)\, a new Danish historical drama about a woman’s struggle to escape forced institutionalization in the 1930s. \nIn conservative early twentieth-century Denmark\, strong-minded Maren is widely considered to be ill-mannered and promiscuous. Amid growing concerns that her “unruly” behavior will infect others\, she is sent away to a women’s institution on the small island of Sprogø\, where she’s to learn to behave properly. Marin shares a room with Sørine\, who has already accepted the conventional narrative that she is unwell and adjusted her behavior accordingly to fit in with society. Sørine is tasked with guiding Maren through Sprogø to help facilitate her rehabilitation\, but Maren’s refusal to comply with the system leads to terrible consequences for both women. Inspired by real historical events\, Unruly is a powerful reminder of misogyny’s psychic toll. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE: THIRTY DAYS OF DARKNESS
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! On March 12\, we’ll be exploring Thirty Days Of Darkness by Jenny Lund Madsen\, an atmospheric\, darkly funny and twisty debut thriller now out in translation by Megan E. Turney about a Danish author who must write a crime novel in 30 days — while solving a murder along the way. \nCopenhagen author Hannah is the darling of the literary community and her novels have achieved massive critical acclaim — but no one ever actually reads them. When the acerbic and snobbish writer is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in the span of the month\, her editor sends her to Húsafjöður for inspiration\, a quiet\, tight-knit village in Iceland filled with colorful local characters. \nBut two days after her arrival\, the body of a fisherman’s young son is pulled from the water … and what begins as a search for plot material quickly turns into a messy and dangerous investigation that threatens to put everything at risk\, including Hannah. Can she solve the murder and bring peace to the victim’s loved ones\, while turning out a bestseller at the same time? \nRegister

SUMMARY:NYICFF | FRYBREAD FACE AND ME
DESCRIPTION:Explore the world without leaving New York! The New York International Children’s Film Festival takes place March 2-17 throughout New York City in 2024\, with 10 screenings at Scandinavia House. \nIn Frybread Face and Me\, it’s the summer of 1990 and Benny has been unceremoniously shipped from San Diego to his grandma’s on the Navajo Nation. Instead of seeing Fleetwood Mac with his mom\, he’s thrust into the dusty daily life of sheep herding. Between insults from his uncle and unintelligible conversations with Grandma (she only speaks Navajo)\, he charts his escape back home. That’s until Frybread Face\, his bossy cousin Dawn\, is similarly ditched on the rez — but unlike Benny\, Fry’s familiar with the ways of Diné\, and what starts out as leeriness toward her city cousin soon gives way to genuine affection. And when it’s time for Benny to head back home\, he’s bringing with him a proud connection to his cousin and his culture. Executive produced by NYICFF alum Taika Waititi\, this hilarious and touching slice-of-life story is a warm portrait of cultural awakening and the adolescent summers that stay with us not because of what happened\, but because of what they made us feel. DESCRIPTION:Explore the world without leaving New York! The New York International Children’s Film Festival takes place March 2-17 throughout New York City in 2024\, with 10 screenings at Scandinavia House. \nIn Dounia – The Great White North\,audiences might recognize the little girl with the big hair who made her way from Syria to Canada in NYICFF 2023’s poignant Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo. Now settled\, Dounia and her grandparents slowly get to know Canada\, the new home that welcomed them: its intense seasons\, its special foods\, its languages (three and counting!). Dounia’s grandparents are sure to keep their Syrian traditions alive at home\, while her new friends share traditions of their own\, like Rosalie’s French-Canadian lifestyle or Miguizou’s vast indigenous folklore. So while she still misses her dad who stayed back in Aleppo\, Dounia now has new ways to keep him with her\, especially when Miguizo’s grandmother Kukum teaches Dounia to call to her father with all of her heart. DESCRIPTION:Explore the world without leaving New York! The New York International Children’s Film Festival takes place March 2-17 throughout New York City in 2024\, with 10 screenings at Scandinavia House. \nIn Puffin Rock and the New Friends\, a new story for our youngest audiences from Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells\, Song of the Sea)\, Puffin Rock\, a small island off the coast of Ireland\, is a warm community and habitat for all creatures big and small. An especially calm respite in the storm of migration\, it’s here where we find puffin Oona\, who looks after her baby brother\, Baba\, shielding him from any possible dangers the gorgeous flora or fauna may pose. When Puffin Isabelle and her step-brother Phoenix arrive on the Rock\, Oona knows all the things to do and games to play to help fend off their homesickness; but there are still serious matters at hand\, like protecting a puffin egg that brings the promise of a new generation. SUMMARY:MŪZA | SCREENING & DIRECTOR TALK
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 8 at 7 PM\, join us for a screening of Lithuanian documentary Mūza (dir. Agnė Marcinkevičūtė\, Lithuania\, 2023)!\n\nDirector Agnė Marcinkevičūtė’s up-close portrait of esteemed Lithuanian pianist Mūza Rubackytė moves freely between the musician’s homes in Paris\, Geneva\, Budapest and her native Vilnius. But her life wasn’t always this free—like many Baltic artists of the late Soviet generation\, Mūza languished behind the Iron Curtain for years before she was able to fully realize her dreams. This is a film about an artist and her life—one that brings the viewer into the beautiful\, yet personally taxing world of art music. As the artist opens up about what independence\, love and passion mean to her\, the costs of her talents also reveal themselves. \nThe screening will be followed by a film talk with Agnė Marcinkeviciute. \nPurchase Tickets
