SUMMARY:Mariupolis 2
DESCRIPTION:The Fifth Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns in 2022 as a hybrid festival with both in-person and virtual screenings on November 2-13! From November 2 through 6\, in-person screenings and events will take place at Scandinavia House in New York\, presented in accordance with new COVID-19 safety guidance and protocols. Following the success of last year’s festival\, the online version will once again be available to viewers all across the U.S. via the Elevent streaming platform November 4-13. \nOn November 6\, see Mariupolis 2 (dir. Mantas Kvedaravičius\, Lithuania/France/Germany 2022\, Documentary). Mariupolis 2 is the fourth and final film by the late Mantas Kvedaravičius\, who returned to the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol earlier this year to follow his 2016 film documenting life there under attack. Embedded with people sheltering in the basement of a church\, Kvedaravičius filmed uncensored everyday life accompanied by constant shelling and the unrelenting noise of war outside. We see people sweeping the yard\, smoking\, praying\, and crying all the while\, with the Azovstal iron and steel works — where brutal fighting continued until the bitter end of the city’s collapse — looming in the distance. \nMariupolis 2 is about human resilience under unimaginable adversity. After the director’s untimely\, brutal death during the making of the film\, his fiancé Hanna Bilobrova managed to escape with the footage and his producers and collaborators have worked tirelessly to continue spreading his work\, his vision\, and his films. \nMariupolis 2 had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. \nA statement on the film from Hanna Bilobrova\, Mantas Kvedaravičius’s fiancé\, collaborator\, and creative partner: “Do you know what the most incredible thing was about Mariupol? No one feared death\, even if people thought they did. Death was already there\, and everyone wanted to die valuable. People would help each other\, even if it meant risking their lives. People would smoke outside and chat\, even if the bombs were falling. Money ceased to exist (and life was too short to recall)\, and everyone was happy with what they had\, becoming a better version of themselves. There was no past\, future\, judgment\, or talk between the lines! That was heaven in hell. That was the delicate butterfly wings touching closer. That was the smell of the naked value of death. That was the life there.” \nThe director’s first film about the city\, Mariupolis\, is available to screen online for the duration of the festival. \nThis film will only be offered as an in-person screening. Tickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nAbout the Director\nMantas Kvedaravičius (1976-2022) was a Lithuanian-born filmmaker with a degree in social anthropology from Cambridge University. His first documentary film\, Barzakh was selected to screen at numerous festivals and won several awards\, including the Amnesty International Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Berlinale in 2011. His following two films\, Mariupolis (2016) and Parthenon (2019) were selected to screen at Berlinale and the Venice International Critics’ Week\, respectively.  \nKvedaravičius was captured and killed by Russian forces in the end of March\, 2022 in Mariupol while documenting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. \nAbout the NYBFF\nEstablished in 2018\, the New York Baltic Film Festival is presented and organized by Scandinavia House in collaboration with the Consulate General of Estonia\, Consulate General of Lithuania\, and Daris Delins\, former Honorary Consul for Latvia in New York and founder of the festival. \nFinancial support for the festival comes from the Estonian Film Institute\, National Film Center of Latvia\, Lithuanian Film Center\, and the Edhard Corporation with additional sponsorship by the Estonian American National Council\, Lithuanian Culture Institute\, Lithuanian Foundation\, Consulate General of Estonia in New York\, Embassy of Latvia in Washington D.C.\, Permanent Mission of Latvia to the U.N. in New York\, Consulate General of Lithuania in New York\, American Latvian Association\, Investment and Development Agency of Latvia\, the PBLA Culture Fund\, and Sondra Litvaitytė. \nOrganizers & Sponsors

Ivar Murd\, Estonia\, 2021\, Documentary).A documentary about musician Uku Kuut and his mother\, singer Maryn E.Coote (or jazz diva Marju Kuut\, as she was better known in Estonia)\, u.Q. takes viewers on a geographical\, political\, and musical journey. Illustrated by a pop-infused collage made up of home footage\, interviews\, and stylized photographs\, the mother-and-son duo travel from the Soviet Union to a recording studio in Los Angeles\, via high school in Sweden\, and back to the newly independent Estonia. With visuals aligning the story through their dynamism and unpredictability as they tour through different\, niche musical subgenres\, Uku and Marju’s life story is a veritable Greek comedy captured on 8mm\, VHS and BETA tape. \n“Ivar Murd covers the whole story of Uku’s relatively short but somewhat adventurous life\, during which he traveled to many places and saw many changes of system\, in a very snappy fashion” (Cineuropa) \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nVirtual screenings of this film will take place from November 7-13. To read more and purchase virtual passes\, please click here. \n \nAbout the Director\nDirector and producer Ivar Murd comes from Kohtla-Järve in East Estonia. Linda Olte\, Latvia/Italy\, 2022\, Narrative). Anastasija (Emma Skirmante) and Diāna (Gerda Aljēna) are sisters living in a Latvian orphanage. When they hear that an American family wants to adopt them\, Diāna cannot wait to move to the States\, while her older sister is hesitant: she is still holding out hope that their biological mother\, Alla (Iveta Pole)\, will return to take care of them and create the stability they both need so much. But when Alla does eventually come back into the girls’ lives — and Anastasija does everything she can to establish a relationship with her — their mother has plans of her own. \nA thoughtful reflection on the experiences of Latvian “system children” caught between foreign adoption and the desire to find their biological parents\, Sisters is a confident first film from director Linda Olte\, with a talented cast adding convincing depth. \nThis film will only be offered as an in-person screening. Emilija Škarnulytė\, Lithuania/Norway\, 2022\, Documentary). A python slithers and curls over the abandoned control room of “Chernobyl’s Big Sister” — the decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania — interpreting the plant’s radioactive core as an unleashed monster\, one that will slither through time for millions of years. From Etruscan ruins and sunken cities to the most modern of underground repositories\, artist and director Emilija Škarnulytė examines different ways in which humanity has attempted to bury the immortal. Burial is a gentle meditation on nuclear waste that examines burial traditions\, and material and ritual heredity as it traces fresh and old scars that have been left on our geographical and cultural landscapes. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nVirtual screenings of this film will take place from November 6-13. To read more and purchase virtual passes\, please click here. \n \n”Škarnulytė has her own personal angle on the nuclear dilemma and displays it in a powerfully visceral way in the closing sequences\, this time opting for imagination over technical perfection.” (Cineuropa) \nAbout the Director\nEmilija Škarnulytė is an artist and filmmaker. SUMMARY:Lame-Os

Following the success of last year’s festival\, the online version will once again be available to viewers all across the U.S. via the Elevent streaming platform November 4-13. \nOn November 5\, see Lame-Os (dir. Marta Elina Martinsone\, Latvia/Czech Republic\, 2021\, Narrative). It’s 1999 and the millennium is fast approaching. Three high school students Sarmīte (Asnāte Sofija Rožkalne)\, Sveta (Ludmila Karpova)\, and Katrīna (Katrīna Dambeniece) are tired of being made fun of by their classmates and decide that something needs to change — so in typical teenage fashion they decide to become the most popular girls in school. Drawing inspiration from the best of ’90s Hollywood films and TV series\, the friends make a plan: the only way to achieve popularity is to get the coolest guys as their prom dates!\n\nFollowing a classic ’90s format reinterpreted from a contemporary Baltic point of view\, Lame-os is an irreverent\, pop-infused musical with a heart\, and a nostalgic look back at a not-so-distant past.  \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nVirtual screenings of this film will take place from November 5-13. To read more and purchase virtual passes\, please click here. \n \nAbout the Director\nMarta Elīna Martinsone has studied theater and film directing and worked as a theater director and director’s assistant. \nOn November 4\, see Pilgrims (Piligrimai\, dir. Laurynas Bareiša\, Lithuania\, 2021\, Narrative). Paulius (Giedrius Kiela) looks up Indrė (Gabija Bargailaitė) for an unusual request: to drive him back to the small town where Matas — his brother and her boyfriend — died. Unsure what to do with his pent-up emotions\, Paulius hopes that this trip will bring about a change\, in whatever form it may come. Though they haven’t spoken in a while\, Indrė agrees\, particularly as an injury has left Paulius incapable of driving. But as the two walk through Matas’ final days\, retracing his steps and meeting the people he saw\, it is unclear whether the journey will make them feel better or worse.\n\nA beautiful\, tender meditation on suffering that links personal struggles with communal ones\, Pilgrims has renewed urgency as we consider buried pains that have never come to light\, and historical suffering that can suddenly feel fresh. Never overwhelming and with a deceptively simple approach\, director Laurynas Bareiša confronts us to consider the nature of violence and closure.  \nPilgrims has been put forward as Lithuania’s candidate for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nVirtual screenings of this film will take place from November 4-13. To read more and purchase virtual passes\, please click here. \n \nAbout the Director\nLaurynas Bareiša was born in Kaunas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in both applied mathematics from Vilnius University and in cinematography from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. In 2016 he completed his studies for a master’s degree in film directing. His first short film Dembava (2014) premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival followed by The Camel (2016)\, By The Pool (2017) and Caucasus (2018)\, which premiered in Venice and Locarno film festivals.  \nHis short film Dummy (2020) premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Pilgrims is his feature directorial debut.

But with marriage comes jealousy\, and the entrepreneur hides Anna away in the forest\, where she bears him eight children. Years later\, Signe\, a young artist\, asks her father how her grandmother died… An animated feature that is a highly personal statement about the director’s struggle with depression\, Rocks in My Pockets is set against the backdrop of Baumane’s grandmother’s life\, with the first part touching on the difficult living conditions in Latvia during the Soviet and German occupations in order to focus on those members of the family suffering from the inherited illness. \nWithout ever becoming insincere\, the filmmaker approaches the gloomy topic with color and humor. \nThis film will only be offered as a virtual screening. Tickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above. \n \nAbout the Director\nSigne Baumane is a Latvian-born\, Brooklyn-based  filmmaker\, artist\, writer\, and animator. SUMMARY:My Love Affair with Marriage
From an early age\, songs and fairytales convinced Zelma that Love with a capital “L” would solve all her problems. The rules for how to behave and dress in order to achieve happiness — i.e.\, to attract the attention of the opposite sex — are clear\, but the other girls in her class can play the part much better. There is\, however\, always a dissatisfied voice within Zelma questioning what she is told: quiet at first\, the voice grows ever louder\, and the more she tries to conform\, the more her body resists. Although she goes through several relationships and travels to different countries\, always accompanied by a singing Greek chorus\, she can never outrun her biology or her heritage. \nExecutive produced by Matthew Modine (who also provides the voice of Zelma’s second husband\, Bo)\, My Love Affair with Marriage is an unusual\,  dryly humorous animated\, coming-of-age story for adults of all ages. \nThis film will only be offered as an in-person screening. SUMMARY:Homo Sovieticus
\nOn November 3\, see Homo Sovieticus (dir. Ivo Briedis\, Latvia/Lithuania/Czechia\, 2021\, Documentary). Three decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union\, the symbols and strong-man rhetoric of totalitarianism have now come crashing back into global politics. Could this rise be subconsciously aided by remnants of servility that persisted in peoples’ minds even as the Soviet Union crumbled? Homo Sovieticus takes its name from a term that was used pejoratively to describe the average conformist person in the Soviet Union and other countries of the former Eastern Bloc. \nThe film’s director Ivo Briedis and screenwriter\, journalist Rita Ruduša — both born in the USSR — take a highly personal journey to explore the phenomenon of “Homo Sovieticus\,” investigating whether they can define this mindset within themselves.  \nMeeting with their contemporaries in various Eastern European countries\, they also explore whether people who possess the totalitarian mindset belong to a specific geographical space: After all\, the Ninth of May Victory Day demonstrations to commemorate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 are held annually as far and wide as Berlin\, Australia\, and even New York. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. \nVirtual screenings of this film will take place from November 4-13. To read more and purchase virtual passes\, please click here. \n \nAbout the Director\nIvo Briedis is a professional cinema and theater script writer and director. His film The Film (2012) was awarded the best non-feature length film in Latvia. He has written and co – written the scripts for two TV series\, The Red Forest (2019) and the drama series Emily. Queen of Press (2021). In 2021\, his documentary Homo Sovieticus premiered at the One World International Human Rights Documentary FF in Prague.

SUMMARY:My Love Affair with Marriage - New York Baltic Film Festival Opening Night
\nIn our Opening Night Celebration at Scandinavia House open to VIP pass holders and invited guests only\, see My Love Affair with Marriage (Mans laulību projekts\, dir. Signe Baumane\, Latvia/USA/Luxembourg\, 2022\, Narrative). My Love Affair with Marriage tells the story of Zelda (voiced by Dagmara Dominczyk) and her Biology (voiced by Michele Pawk). \nTonight’s event is only open to VIP pass holders and invited guests; the film will later screen in-person on November 3. Learn more and get tickets here.  \n \nAbout the Director\nSigne Baumane is a Latvian-born\, Brooklyn-based  filmmaker\, artist\, writer\, and animator. She has made 17 award-winning animated shorts but is best known for her first animated feature Rocks in my Pockets\, which premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2014. Baumane’s new animated feature My Love Affair With Marriage fuses animation with music\, theater\, science\, photography\, three-dimensional sets and traditional hand-drawn animation. Baumane is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow in Film for New York Foundation for the Arts. She has a degree in Philosophy from Moscow State University. Financial support for the festival comes from the Estonian Film Institute\, National Film Center of Latvia\, Lithuanian Film Center\, and the Edhard Corporation with additional sponsorship by the Estonian American National Council\, Lithuanian Culture Institute\, Lithuanian Foundation\, Consulate General of Estonia in New York\, Embassy of Latvia in Washington D.C.\, Permanent Mission of Latvia to the U.N. in New York\, Consulate General of Lithuania in New York\, American Latvian Association\, Investment and Development Agency of Latvia\, the PBLA Culture Fund\, and Sondra Litvaitytė. \nORGANIZERS & SPONSORS

SUMMARY:Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl Ceramics — Through the Eyes of a Collector
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1775\, Royal Copenhagen remains one the oldest porcelain manufacturers still in operation today. Throughout its long history\, the factory has experienced numerous highs from the major World’s Fairs and lows from multiple wars and has weathered more than 130 years of competition from the Bing & Grøndahl Porcelain Factory. After 1882\, the two factories were located less than a mile apart\, with their flagship stores remaining next-door neighbors until their eventual merger in 1987. \nIn today’s lecture\, Dr. Elliot Todd\, a second-generation collector of Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl porcelain\, stoneware and faience\, will review the history and wide array of works produced by both firms from their inception to their eventual merger\, along with their many technical and artistic successes. \nTopics covered will include the time-honored blue mussel pattern along with other 18th-century pieces; production during Denmark’s 19th-century “Golden Age”; unique and production underglaze works from the Art Nouveau period\, which revolutionized porcelain production throughout Europe; crystalline\, craquelé\, overglaze\, and contemporary porcelain; as well as stoneware and art faience. \nThis program will take place in-person at Scandinavia House. RSVP is required; please register at the link above. \nAbout Elliot Todd\nDr. Elliot Todd‘s father Frederick (1920-2001) purchased his first piece of Danish porcelain in 1947 — a Royal Copenhagen figurine\, chosen as a wedding gift for a friend. Born in 1957 into a home filled with Danish porcelain\, Elliot soon became fascinated with his father’s collection\, and spent many hours perusing the numerous books and magazines that he had acquired over the years\, most of which were in Danish. His father would often share stories about where he found this or that piece as well as the proverbial “one that got away.” \nHis father’s passion eventually became contagious\, and Elliot now has actively sought pieces over the last 40 years to further expand and round out this two-generation collection of porcelain\, stoneware\, and faience\, all of which has been exhaustively researched and documented though the factory’s archives in Denmark. Professionally\, Elliot recently retired as Professor Emeritus from a leading American university where he was an internationally recognized researcher and educator.
