Born into a musical family\, Siegel studied with Rudolf Ganz in his native Chicago\, with the legendary Rosina Lhévinne at The Juilliard School and\, as a Fulbright Scholar\, with Ilona Kabos in London. \nHe has performed with some of the finest orchestras in the world\, including the Berlin Philharmonic\, London Symphony\, Moscow State Symphony\, the Oslo and Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestras\, and NHK Symphony of Japan\, among others. SUMMARY:The Fantastic Art of Paper-Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, celebrated Danish paper-cutting artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen returns for a workshop on creating wonderful paper-cut beings! Clausen\, who has held paper-cutting workshops in Denmark\, Japan and the U.S.\, has created a magical paper-cut universe inhabited by beings previously confined inside the paper. “I can sense that the beings are in the paper\, but at the same time they are sad. After some help from the scissors\, they travel around happily in our diverse world\,” Clausen explains of his artwork. \nIn this online workshop held via Zoom\, Clausen will share his techniques and guide viewers through creating their own paper-cut magic. Participants will also explore the paper-cut artwork of renowned storyteller Hans Christian Andersen\, and hear about Clausen’s own journey to becoming a paper-cutting artist. The class will be limited to 30 participants to allow for audience interaction. \nThe class will take place as virtual instruction over Zoom; students should supply their own materials to cut alongside Clausen. Skill is beginner-level and above. \nMaterials: \n\nSharp pair of scissors\nFive pieces of any color paper sized approximately 4 x 4 inches (approximately the thickness of printer paper)\nFive pieces of any color paper sized approximately 1 x 2 inches\nAdditional paper to use as needed\n\nAbout the Instructor\nTorben Jarlstrøm Clausen started as a paper-cut artist in 2004. Since then\, he has exhibited over 110 places in the U.S.\, Japan\, and Denmark and has held numerous workshops in the same countries.Clausen lives in Odense\, Denmark\, which is the birthplace of world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen\, who was also a very skilled paper-cut artist. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen seeks with his paper cuts to maintain and renew this old paper cut tradition\, which Hans Christian Andersen was an exponent of almost 200 years ago. Simon Lereng Wilmont\, Denmark\, 2022)\, which has now been shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature at the 95th Academy Awards. \nIn this war-worn and impoverished corner of Eastern Ukraine where addiction casts along shadow\, there sits a safe haven for children temporarily removed from their parents. A House Made of Splinters follows three kids awaiting their fate: will they go back or move on to a new home\, while as a group of dedicated social-workers create small moments of joy and respite from childhoods all but lost. \nFilmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont returns with a follow-up to his acclaimed first feature\, The Distant Barking of Dogs\, offering a unique look into how the long-term consequences of war on a society already under strain impacts the most vulnerable. His is a poignant and deeply intimate portrait of a remarkable way station filled with care\, support\, and trust for a group of kids who are in desperate need of more. \nThis screening will take place in-person at Scandinavia House in Victor Borge Hall. \n \nAbout the Director\nBorn in Copenhagen\, Denmark\, Simon Lereng Wilmont graduated as a Documentary Film Director from The National Film School of Denmark in 2009. His first feature documentary film The Distant Barking of Dogs (2017)\, premiered at IDFA and was awarded Best First Appearance. It has since then won 35+ awards worldwide\, among these the McBaine Documentary Feature Award at San Francisco’s SFFILM Festival\, it was nominated for a European Film Award (EFA 2018)\, an Emmy (2020)\, and shortlisted for an Oscar (2019). \nThe film also won a Peabody Award (2020). As a director\, his films also include Dormitory Master (2009)\, Above Ground\, Beneath the Sky (2008)\, Chikara-The Sumo Wrestler’s Son (2013) and The Fencing Champion (2014).

Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On January 10\, we’ll be discussing The Employees by Olga Ravn\, who discussed the novel with us in May 2021 with translator Martin Aitken. \nIn the near-distant future\, millions of kilometers from Earth\, the crew of the Six-Thousand Ship consists of those who were born\, and those who were made; those who will die\, and those who will not. DESCRIPTION:Learn the Nordic languages in classes offered this fall at Scandinavia House! In this course based on conversation and grammar held as remote learning\, students will now deal with finesse and formal language. Instead of expanding our writing\, we will focus on condensing. Discussions will span traditions\, Vikings and lore\, unwritten societal norms\, leadership\, work and family structures as well as poetry. \nAt the end of the semester\, students will know: \n\nTransitive and intratransitive verbs\nEmphatic rewriting\nClause abbreviation\n\nStudents will be able to: \n\nDiscuss poetry and literary writings and have an understanding about Swedish  norms in society and at work.\n\nPrerequisite: Swedish Intermediate 2 or equivalent. This course will take place remotely via Zoom; instructions for remote learning will be emailed upon registration. Ali Abbasi\, Denmark/Germany/Sweden/France\, 2022); today’s screening is open to ASF Members\,  Academy Members and guest. \nFemale journalist Rahimi (Zar Amir Ebrahimi) travels to the Iranian holy city of Mashhad to investigate a serial killer who believes he is doing the work of God\, cleansing the streets of sinners by murdering sex workers. As the body count mounts\, and Rahimi draws closer to exposing his crimes\, the opportunity for justice grows harder to attain as the ‘Spider Killer’ is embraced by many as a hero. A traditional Christmas in Scandinavia is not complete without the traditional julbord\, a holiday variation of the quintessential Smörgåsbord buffet-style meal in the Scandinavian countries that includes multiple staples of Swedish cuisine served on the table. DESCRIPTION:See a live performance with two of Denmark’s leading folk musicians this December at Scandinavia House! Gangspil\, featuring Sonnich Lydom on accordion and harmonica and Kristian Bugge on fiddle\, performs old dance tunes and songs from every corner of their Scandinavian home country\, from rural islands like Læsø to Copenhagen\, including a few of their own compositions. Their lively performances include everything from wild polkas and jigs to lyrical waltzes\, fiery reels and happy hopsas\, as well as the exotic “Sønderhoning” dance tunes from the island of Fanø and long-forgotten songs from all over the country. \nHaving toured extensively with over 120 shows in North American since 2015\, as the recipient of honors including the 2016 Tradition Award at the Danish Music Awards\,  Gangspil brings audiences on an entertaining and variated journey through Danish folk traditions alongside humor and stories from their years on the road. \nTickets to tonight’s performance must be purchased in advance at the link above. \nAbout the Performers\nSonnich Lydom (accordion\, harmonica\, vocal) is a master of Irish\, French-Canadian\, and especially Danish traditional tunes. During the last 25 years he’s been leading the revival for diatonic accordion and harmonica in the Danish folk music. Sonnich holds a special place in his heart for the music from the Western Island of Fanø\, where his family is deeply rooted. He is best know from his work with the ULC trio and later quintet ULC received the Danish Music Award in the category “Folk Album of the Year” in both 2001 and 2004. Both Sonnich and Kristian were among the first 12 musicians to receive the honorary title “Danmarks Rigsspillemænd” (National Danish Folk Musicians) in 2014. \nKristian Bugge (fiddle\, vocal) has specialized in the strong Danish folk music traditions. He is very active on the Danish and Scandinavian folk music scene as well as in the rest of Europe and North America\, both as a musician and teacher. His debut CD was awarded “Danish Debut of the Year” and “Danish Folk Instrumentalist of the Year” at the Danish Music Awards Folk 2006.
