Latvijas preses karaliene\, dir. Andis Mizišs & Kristīne Želve\, Latvia\, 2021)\, a mini-series about Emīlija Benjamiņš (Guna Zariņa)\, the “queen of press” in interwar Latvia\, whose wealth and tragic fate have since become legend.Emīlija follows the period from the beginnings of Emīlija’s magazine Atpūta (Leisure)\, to President Ulmanis’ coup d’état and the start of WWII. In the first two episodes\, we meet Emīlija\, her colorful extended family\, her lively\, creative staff\, and experience the nightlife of 1920s Riga. Emīlija deals with setbacks elegantly\, managing everything from cocaine addictions to angry advertisers\, and always gets her way. Pulk’s films have a strong visual signature and display a relentless interest in the human spirit and what it is that makes us fight\, and often have a strong social theme at their core.  \nPulk’s short films have screened at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival\, Zagrebdox\, Doc Buenos Aires\, Bogoshorts\, Queens World Film Festival. In 2018\, her film VIDA ALEGRE\, which was shot in the Peruvian Amazon under the mentorship of Werner Herzog\, was chosen for distribution by Black Factory Cinema. The Baron schemes to lay his hands on Eva’s family inheritance by marrying her off\, but Eva has different plans and won’t let her free spirit be tied down\, escaping on the day of her arranged wedding. Determined to track her down\, the Baron sends a search party after her — at the same time\, there is a murder investigation underway at the manor and everyone is a suspect! He holds a degree in Film & TV from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He directed the award-winning documentary ONE TICKET PLEASE (2017) as a student\, and has been working on both fiction and documentary films ever since.  \nBelieving that one debut film is not enough\, Kaža is set to release three feature films in the near future\, beginning with the first Latvian western WILD EAST (2021)\, followed by the youth drama NEON SPRING (2022) and the comedy THE TASTE OF WATER (2022). The screening will be followed by a filmmaker Q&A and an Opening Reception for VIP & In-Person passholders and special guests. Goodbye Soviet Union will have an encore in-person screening on Saturday\, November 6 at 12 PM and will be available via streaming to Virtual passholders from Sunday\, November 7. \nIn this comedic coming-of-age story set in Leningrad 3 — an idealized Soviet town in Estonia complete with a secret radiation facility — Johannes was born prematurely and without a father. Raised by his eccentric grandparents while his single\, politically vocal mother seeks a better life in Finland\, Johannes is beset by issues as he starts attending a new school\, after exposure to the polluted waters on a nearby beach. Now\, on top of being a member of the Ingrian-Finnish minority\, rather than Estonian or Russian like the rest of his classmates\, he is also bald! Jurgis Matulevičius\, Lithuania\, 2019\, Narrative). In 1941\, Andrius kills his Jewish neighbor\, Isaac\, during the Lietukis garage massacre. Twenty-five years later\, film director Gediminas returns to Soviet Lithuania from the U.S. with a screenplay that portrays the same massacre in detail and gradually attracts the interest of the KGB. Why would someone return from the U.S.? Why is the screenplay so accurate? Isaac shows how the aftermath of the murder ripples through the decades\, affecting lives and love long after the war has ended. Mārtiņš Grauds\, Latvia\, 2020\, Documentary). A primeval Finnish forest may not seem an obvious site for an opera. But if nature is part of your performance and the singers are trees personified — as in the unique open-air drama Tree Opera\, which premiered in 2019 in the Kainuu region of Finland — the decision is actually quite organic! Mārtiņš Grauds’ documentary follows a group of contemporary and boundary-pushing Latvian architects\, artists and costume designers who traveled to Finland and trekked deep into the forest to help composer Anna Ķirse’s biodegradable vision come to life. \nAs their thought and care instaging the opera culminates in a beautiful performance\, the work highlights the importance of protecting these ancient forests. After the final note is sung\, and after the last spectator leaves\, the decomposing architecture and scenography become a part of the Mustarinda nature trail. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. Pulk’s films have a strong visual signature and display a relentless interest in the human spirit and what it is that makes us fight\, and often have a strong social theme at their core.  \nPulk’s short films have screened at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival\, Zagrebdox\, Doc Buenos Aires\, Bogoshorts\, Queens World Film Festival. In 2018\, her film VIDA ALEGRE\, which was shot in the Peruvian Amazon under the mentorship of Werner Herzog\, was chosen for distribution by Black Factory Cinema. Lauri Randla\, Estonia/Finland\, 2020). In this comedic coming-of-age story set in Leningrad 3 — an idealized Soviet town in Estonia complete with a secret radiation facility — Johannes was born prematurely and without a father. Raised by his eccentric grandparents while his single\, politically vocal mother seeks a better life in Finland\, Johannes is beset by issues as he starts attending a new school\, after exposure to the polluted waters on a nearby beach. Now\, on top of being a member of the Ingrian-Finnish minority\, rather than Estonian or Russian like the rest of his classmates\, he is also bald! Marija Stonytė\, Lithuania/Estonia\, 2020\, Documentary). Three young women\, Agne\, Karina and Gintare\, decide to volunteer for military service after conscription for men is reintroduced to Lithuania as a response to possible threats from Russia. Living and training among 600 men on an isolated military base over the course of nine months\, each woman undertakes their training with their own romanticized ideas about what they want to get out of the experience; as their understanding of the realities of their situation changes over the course of the film\, their perspectives of life shift and change. DESCRIPTION:This November\, the 3rd Annual Sámi Film Festival explores Sámi values\, visions\, and stories\, through a series of short films and documentaries from  Sápmi\, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Russia. Presented a partnership between The National Nordic Museum in Seattle and Scandinavia House in New York\, with support provided by the Consulate General of Finland in New York\, The Embassy of Finland\, Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York\, The Consulate General of Sweden in New York and institutional support provided by the Pacific Sámi Searvi and International Sámi Film Institute\, films will be presented virtually from November 5 through 8\, with a live filmmaker panel taking place on November 7 at 2 PM. \nThe package “Short Films” presents seven shorts by Sámi filmmakers: Pulling in the Belt/Ribadit\, directed by Elle Sofe Sara; Liššá\, directed by Jonne Järvinen; Áile and Grandmother\, directed by Silja Somby; Giitu\, directed by Olve Aslaksen; A Home Truth\, directed by Rebecca King; Garjá\, directed by Lada Suomenrinne and Niki Rasmus; and Spring 2020/Vår2020\, directed by Ann Holmgren. \nThe Sámi Film Festival will also include “Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest\,” featuring the North American premiere of the feature Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest with the documentary Heidi. Each film package is $12\, and $8 for ASF Members and members of National Nordic Museum and Pacific Sámi Searvi. \nFilm Lineup\nPulling in the Belt/Ribadit\nShort film | Iceland | 2019 | 6 minutes | Elle Sofe Sara | North Sámi with English subtitles \nPulling in the Belt looks at the ancient Sápmi tradition of ribadit (pulling in the belt)\, as director Elle Sofe introduces two elders who have experienced the practice and orchestrates a revival with energetic young people and dancers. \nLiššá\nShort film/Documentary | 2014 | 13 minutes | Jonne Järvinen \nA documentary about Sámi handicraft. As the stepmother watches Snow White grow up and sees her burpee count inching closer to her own personal record\, she realizes that there isn’t enough room at the gym for both of them. DESCRIPTION:This October\, the 4th Annual Sámi Film Festival explores Sámi values\, visions\, and stories through film in a must-see hybrid event taking place both in-personal and virtually! Presented as a partnership between Scandinavia House\, National Nordic Museum\, and the Pacific Sámi Searvi in Seattle from October 28-31\, the program will include a variety of contemporary Sámi documentaries\, short films\, and panel discussions with the filmmakers.  \nScreening at Scandinavia House on October 30 at 3 PM\, the feature film Eatnameamet – Our Silent Struggle will be presented with the short film Emma Elliane – Atte Munnje Sani Saji /Just Give Me the Word.  \nThe documentary Eatnameamet – Our Silent Struggle (dir. Suvi West; Finland\, 2021) explores multiple colonial acts done by the State of Finland towards the Sámi people and as well as the government’s attitude towards the Sámi. Filmmaker Suvi West looks at how these injustices are part of a bigger question about the ownership of the land\, unraveling a tangle of questions from seemingly superficial cultural appropriation to moments deciding the fate of the entire people. (74 min.) \nPreceding the feature film and filmed in the Sámi community of Guovdageaidnu\, the short music film Emma Elliane – Atte Munnje Sani Saji /Just Give Me the Word (dir. Sara Margrethe Oskal; 2017) is a performance by young Sámi artist Emma Elliane rapping in her mother tongue with a clear message to the greediness that threatens nature and people all around the world.  \nBoth films are also available for Virtual Screening from Thursday\, October 28 through Sunday\, October 31; get passes here. She is also an experienced screenwriter and poet and her literature is translated into multiple languages. In 2015 she made her debut as a film director with the short film Guovssahas oaidná du – Aurora Keeps an Eye on You\, which was screened in several prestigious international film festivals. Her second film Beaivvi Nieida – Daughter of the Sun was previously screened at the Sami Film Festival. \nEmma Elliane is an Indigenous Sámi artist from Guovdageaidnu\, North Norway. Growing up with traditional Sámi music and joik\, she joiks while also using traditional elements in her own contemporary music\, with lyrics in her mothertunge. After releasing her debut album Dovddut Eai Gielis/Feelings Don´t Lie she has been performing in both Sámi and International festivals. \nFinnish director Suvi West didn’t just want to tell the story of the mistreatment of Sámi people in Finland – she felt the need to tell it\, she explained to Business Doc Europe. “I felt like I didn’t have any other choice\,” she underlines of her film selected for Nordisk Panorama Documentary Competition. “This film started five years ago. The political climate had gotten so hostile\, there were a lot of decisions being made that threatened the Sámi culture and Sámi societies\,” she explains. In fact\, she was meant to be working on another project but abandoned that to make Eatnameamet. “I wanted to bring knowledge to people so they could understand the situation more\,” West explains. “In the Finnish school system\, they aren’t teaching about Sámi people\, they don’t want to deal with the history.” West calls Eatnameamet her “most openly political film”; it examines the complicated history and current relations between the Finnish government and the indigenous Sámi people. In her work\, she has studied various themes including her own identity between the Finnish and the Sámi culture. Since 1992\, Helander’s work has been exhibited in two dozen solo exhibitions and over 50 group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Helander was awarded the Risto Jarva Prize for her film Eatnanvuloš lottit\, Birds In The Earth at the 2018 Tampere Film Festival\, and has been selected as the curator for the 2019 Mänttä Art Festival exhibition. \nBased in Guovdageaidnu\, Elle Sofe Sara is a choreographer and director who works at the intersection of filmmaking\, dance and theater. Her works regularly shed light on the social\, political and cultural peculiarities and challenges of the Sámi People. She is the festival profile at the Arctic Arts Festival in Harstad in 2020 and 2021\, and in 2019\, she won the Moon Jury Award for her short film Ribadit at Imagine Native Film Festival in Canada. Elle Sofe is also one of four talents in Talent Norway’s filmmakers program and founder of Dáiddadállu/ Sámi artist collective in Guovdageaidnu. \nElle Márjá Eira is a multi-talented artist from Kautokeino who has recently received attention at major international industry festivals for her work as a film music composer and filmmaker. As a musical artist she performs works at the intersection of joik\, electronic and Indigenous music\, with a presence\, rawness and ingenuity that transcends language barriers. She is also a member of the band Snoweye with Lucy Parnell and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin\, Them Crooked Vultures). Elle Márjá is from a reindeer herding family in Kautokeino and belongs to Reindeer District 26 – Lákkonjárga. She was a winner of Arctic Talent 2015 and the recipient of a GramArt scholarship in 2019.  \nKatja Gauriloff is a Skolt Sámi film director and screenwriter. Her documentary films A Shout into the Wind\, Canned Dreams and Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest have been awarded the State Quality Support for cinema productions in Finland\, and her films have been screened and awarded at various festivals around the world. Gauriloff has been awarded for the Finnish National Film Awards (Jussi) for the best documentary film in 2016. Her first fiction feature Baby Jane\, based on a novel by award-winning author Sofi Oksanen\, was released 2019. Gauriloff is currently working on her second fiction feature Je’vida which is set in Sàpmi. \nLiselott Wajstedt is a Swedish North Sami filmmaker and multimedia artist whose work spans film and video\, collage\, painting\, photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, and installation. Her experimental moving image body of work comprises over two dozen shorts and feature-length films. The popular series hosted by Scandinavia House and Per Tengstrand welcomes its audience back to Victor Borge Hall with this program featuring some of the most beloved solo piano works in the classical repertoire\, including the heavenly “Impromptu in G-flat” by Franz Schubert\, the intensely dramatic “Funeral March Sonata” by Frédéric Chopin\, and the beautiful\, comforting “Intermezzo in E-flat” by Johannes Brahms. \n“This has been a long wait\, and I am so excited to greet the audience at Scandinavia House again and to play for them. Finally\, we meet again!” —Per Tengstrand \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. Attendees are required to follow all Scandinavia House safety protocols\, including wearing masks during the program and observing social distancing rules in signage. Please read our full safety protocols here. \nMusic on Park Avenue will continue with performances on December 2\, 2021 and January 6\, February 17\, March 17\, and April 21\, 2022. \nThe Music on Park Avenue concert series is supported in part by a generous grant from The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation and in part by the Lynn Carter Fund of the ASF. \nAbout Per Tengstrand\nPer Tengstrand has firmly established himself as one of today’s most exciting pianists. He has been described by The Washington Post as “technically resplendent\, powerful\, intuitively secure\,” and by The New York Times as “a superb Swedish pianist” whose recital “was rewarding\, both for its unusual programming and for his eloquent\, technically polished performances.”Tengstrand is the subject of the acclaimed Swedish documentary The Soloist\, directed by Magnus Gertten and Stefan Berg (Sweden\, 2003)\, which was featured at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in New York. \nIn 2005 he was decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the “Litteris et Artibus” Medal for outstanding service to the arts. During the pandemic\, Per started making music documentaries which were viewed and appreciated by people all over the world. As this line of work will continue\, the documentary Beethoven and the Freedom of the Will is planned to have its world premiere at Scandinavia House in 2022.

As Råstam investigates the conditions behind those confessions — unmasking the legal chaos that led to the conviction\, and the incredible circumstances surrounding it — he becomes dedicated to proving Quick’s innocence. (122 min. In Swedish with English subtitles) \nFilm screenings will take place as a 3 PM matinee and 7 PM evening showing.
