SUMMARY:100 SEASONS | SCREENING
DESCRIPTION:“Skillfully blending fiction and real footage taken from his own life\, Bucchieri has gifted viewers a powerful\, moving melodrama” (Projektor)—on February 28\, see a screening of 100 Seasons (dir. Giovanni Bucchieri\, Sweden\, 2023)\, a moving new drama centered on a chaotic\, passionate first love. *Please note that due to travel issues director Giovanni Bucchieri will no longer be present at the screening.* \nInspired by real\, 30-year-old video diaries of his first love affair\, Swedish director Giovanni Bucchieri recalls a naive romance involving two artists who saw each other as soulmates. The intense relationship between these “twin flames” is challenged by a bipolar diagnosis\, their ambitious personalities\, and their insecure attachment styles. An inspiring and heartfelt film about dreams\, failure and the kind of love that can never die\, 100 Seasons is a tender look at the beautiful but chaotic tension between creative and romantic passion. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:RADICAL CREATIVES | SCREENING & FILM TALK
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the U.S. premiere of Radical Creatives\, a new documentary from director Emilia Hernesniemi! In this film looking at how to conquer self-doubt through the power of expression\, Aalto University students\, teachers and researchers\, as well as artists\, stakeholders and start-up founders explore the concept of creativity from a multitude of perspectives. Emilia Hernesniemi  will be present at the screening for a film talk. \nAs individuals\, organizations and societies\, we need creativity more than ever. When crises turn us inwards\, narrowing mindsets and ways of thinking and doing\, a better — though more demanding — option is to stay curious. An artistic commission produced by Aalto University and production company Koski Syväri\, Radical Creatives explores how creativity can transform teams\, organizations and the world at large when it is combined with trust and respect for diversity. \nRegister

SUMMARY:DR. NICHOLSON AND THE BLUE DIAMOND: THE ART OF EARLY EUROPEAN CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Dr. Nicholson og den Blaa Diamant (Dr. Nicholson and the Blue Diamond; 1913)\, an exhilarating Danish heist film of the silent era set to live musical accompaniment\, with an introduction and book talk from Professor Vito Adriaensens on the event of the publication of his new book\, Velvet Curtains and Gilded Frames: The Art of Early European Cinema. In Velvet Curtains and Gilded Frames\, Adriaensens looks at Europe’s first feature films through the lens of an art historian. He focuses on how internationally influential Danish\, French and Swedish companies first created cinematic form by mirroring popular genre painting\, social stage melodrama\, and Pictorialist photography. These were the first “art films.” \nDr. Nicholson og den blaa Diamant (Dr. Nicholson and the Blue Diamond; 1913). 56 min.\nWhen the Danish crime caper Dr. Nicholson and the Blue Diamond hit U.S. screens in 1913\, Moving Picture News called it “chock-a-block [full of scenes] of the kind which send thrills cavorting up and down our spines.” Beautifully tinted and toned\, Dr. Nicholson presents us with sensational thrills—cheap\, yet extremely expensive to pull off on film at the time—wrapped in an art-film jacket that suited most European films of the period. A French Count seeks better luck in America but collides with an evil\, hookah-smoking genius who calls himself Doctor. This is a story involving kidnapping\, cocaine\, explosions. a wild chase scene on the roof of a moving train\, and a sprinkle of modern dance. The film will screen with live musical accompaniment. \nWith Holger Reenberg\, Edith Buemann Psilander\, Anton de Verdier\, and Viggo Wiehe. Written by Mogens Falck. Director unknown. Produced by Kinografen. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:FALLEN LEAVES
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Valentine’s Day Finnish-style at Scandinavia House with Fallen Leaves (Kuolleet lehdet\, Finland\, 2023)\, award-winning director Aki Kaurismäki’s triumphant new film about love\, chance and fate! \nKaurismäki (Le Havre\, The Other Side of Hope) makes a masterful return with Fallen Leaves\, a timeless\, hopeful and satisfying love story that won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Set in present-day Helsinki\, the film tells the story of Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen)\, two lonely souls whose chance meeting at a local karaoke bar is beset by numerous hurdles. From lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses\, alcoholism and a charming stray dog\, the pair’s path to happiness is as bittersweet as it is ultimately delightful. \nShot through with Kaurismäki’s typically playful\, idiosyncratic style and deadpan sense of humor\, this tender romantic tragicomedy is both a loving tribute to the filmmaker’s beloved contemporaries and a timely reminder of the potency of movie-going from one of cinema’s living legends.  \n“Aki Kaurismäki’s almost feelgood romance is a droll delight” (The Guardian) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:ÆDNAN BY LINNEA AXELSSON — NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! On February 13\, we’ll be discussing Ædnan by Sámi-Swedish author Linnea Axelsson\, an epic\, multigenerational novel-in-verse about two Sámi families and their quest to stay together across migration and colonial trauma\, a winner of the 2018 August Prize. \nIn Northern Sámi\, the word Ædnan means the land\, the earth\, and my mother. These are all crucial forces within the lives of the Indigenous families that animate this groundbreaking book: an astonishing verse novel that chronicles a hundred years of change\, beginning with in the 1910s as Ristin and her family migrate their herd of reindeer to summer grounds. When they are forced to separate due to the newly formed border between Sweden and Norway\, Ristin loses one of her sons in an accident\, leaving her struggling to manage her family and community as a result. \nIn the 1970s\, Lise\, as part of a new generation of Sámi grappling with questions of identity and inheritance\, reflects on her traumatic childhood\, when she was forced to leave her parents and was placed in a Nomad School to be stripped of the language of her ancestors. Finally\, in the 2010s we meet Lise’s daughter\, Sandra\, an activist fighting for reparations in a highly publicized land rights trial\, in a time when the Sámi language is all but lost. Weaving together the voices of half a dozen characters\, from elders to young people unsure of their heritage\, Ædnan is a powerful reminder of how durable language can be\, even when it is borrowed — especially when it has to hold what no longer remains. \nRegister

SUMMARY:ÆDNAN — VIRTUAL BOOK TALK WITH LINNEA AXELSSON & MATILDE AUGUSTA HUSEBY
DESCRIPTION:On February 13\, join us for a book talk with Sámi-Swedish author Linnea Axelsson on Ædnan\, her epic\, August Prize-winning multigenerational novel-in-verse about two Sámi families and their quest to stay together across a century of migration\, violence\, and colonial trauma. In coordination with our monthly Nordic Book Club Online\, which will discuss Ædnan later today at 6 PM\, the author will be joined by moderator Matilde Augusta Huseby for a virtual talk about the writing of the novel. \nIn Northern Sámi\, the word Ædnan means the land\, the earth\, and my mother.
