On June 6\, we’ll be discussing the novel Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius\, out now in translation by Rachel Willson-Broyles from Simon & Schuster. \nLouise Erdrich meets Jo Nesbø in this spellbinding Swedish novel that follows a young indigenous woman as she struggles to defend her family’s reindeer herd and culture amidst xenophobia\, climate change\, and a devious hunter whose targeted kills are considered mere theft in the eyes of the law. On a winter day north of the Arctic Circle\, nine-year-old Elsa—daughter of Sámi reindeer herders—sees a man brutally kill her beloved reindeer calf and threaten her into silence. DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAYS—6:30-8:10 PM (online)\nApril 12 through June 7\, 2023\n$499 ($449.10 ASF Members) \nLearn the Nordic languages in classes offered this spring at Scandinavia House! In this course based on conversation and grammar\, students will now deal with finesse and formal language. Instead of expanding our writing\, we will focus on condensing. Discussions will span traditions\, Vikings and lore\, unwritten societal norms\, leadership\, work and family structures as well as poetry. This class will take place online only via Zoom. \nAt the end of the semester\, students will know: \n\nVerbs with direct and indirect object\nPerfect Participle\nVerb particle with preposition\n\nStudents will be able to: \n\nDiscuss superstition and folklore\, film and have a wider knowledge of the structure between Swedish landscapes\, counties and municipality.\n\nPrerequisite: Swedish Intermediate 2 or equivalent.
