SUMMARY:NORTHERN PATTERNS: LEARN TRADITIONAL ARCTIC BEADING DETAILS
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop draws inspiration from the work of master bone carver Inna Eilyuvna Iadne\, whose intricate sculptures and jewelry reflect the cultural depth and artistic traditions of the Indigenous peoples of Yamal. Participants will explore Northern ornamental traditions through beadweaving\, translating symbolic patterns and storytelling elements into contemporary wearable art. \nThrough guided practice\, attendees will learn 1 to 3 beadweaving techniques and create an original jewelry piece such as earrings\, a bracelet\, or a pendant. Along the way\, they will gain insight into the symbolism\, composition\, and cultural context that inform Northern decorative arts\, as seen in Iadne’s meticulous attention to detail and narrative craftsmanship. \nThe workshop aims to develop artistic taste\, strengthen compositional thinking\, and equip participants with the skills to independently design and create meaningful handmade pieces that connect traditional heritage with modern expression. \n\nPurchase tickets

As a child born in 1962\, Salumäe struggled with an abusive home life\, shattered dreams\, and coaches with their own agendas—not to mention the harsh and dehumanizing sports system of the former Soviet Union. Despite this\, she went on to smash world records and rack up numerous medals\, culminating in an ultimate win: the first Olympic gold medal for Estonia in 56 years after the country regained independence in 1991. Directed by German Golub\, the recipient of the coveted Student Academy Award\, Our Erika features Karolin Jürise’s star-making performance as a determined and iron-willed athlete\, and shows how every nation needs a hero—even if that nation seldom stops to ask if there is something that the hero needs.  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:ULYA | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences! \nThe Saturday evening screening will feature the North American Premiere of Ulya\, a biopic of legendary Latvian athlete Uļjana Semjonova\, with a film talk with director Viesturs Kairišs. Latvia’s Showcase Film at this year’s NYBFF\, the film had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and is Latvia’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. \nSoviet Union\, Latvia\, 1964. On the Paberze farm in the snowy fields in Latgale\, teenager Ulya’s height is approaching two meters at an alarming rate\, and does not seem to be stopping. So far she has found a safe haven in her village\, where she is surrounded by her loving family and helps out with farmwork. But the question gnawing at her parents (and Ulya also) is: is there a place in the world for a giant-sized girl? \nWhen her older sister Tatjana’s fiancé Pavel secretly sends Ulja’s class photo to Karbergs\, head coach of the Latvian women’s basketball team TTT\, they soon have an answer. Seeing huge potential\, Karbergs whisks the girl away to capital Riga\, where Ulya hopes to find taller houses and taller people. But on the basketball court\, her height sticks out even more – until\, with the help of her ill-mannered and foul-mouthed coach\, she discovers that the best way to avoid derision is to start playing better.  \nWith hard work comes first success. But as Ulya rises on her path towards stardom\, she must deal with the painful realization that others see her as a means for their own ends\, and that basketball may not help her quest for a normal life. As an important professional test approaches—the famous Leningrad Spartakiad—Ulya must face her own reality\, and choose what she really wants.  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:MORTEN | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences! \nSee Ivan Pavljutskov’s Morten\, a coming-of-age film set between reality and the mystical in the Estonian countryside\, on November 7. Director Ivan Pavljutškov will be present for film talk and Q&A \nFifteen-year old Morten lives with his uncle Urmas and a one-eyed cat named Nurru in a crumbling farmhouse in an abandoned forest village. His mother works in Finland to save money for their future home\, and the boy has never heard anything about his father. Morten tries his best to hide the reality of his life from his classmates\, but finds it difficult without any money or self-confidence. What he does have is a camera—an old one that he inherited from his grandfather—and the photos he takes make him feel as if he’s at least good at something\, if not worthy of love.  \nUntil suddenly\, one day there are two people who do: Emilie\, a girl whom Morten dares to open up to for the first time in his life\, and who looks forward to meeting him more than anything. And then there’s Miia—a girl who shouldn’t be interested in someone like Morten at all\, but somehow still is. Based on Reeli Reinaus’ novel Morten\, Emilie and the Lost Worlds\, the film had its world premiere in the Special Screenings section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2026\, and has since won three awards at Italy’s Giffoni Film Festival. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:BALTIC SHORTS | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November\, bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences. On Saturday\, November 7\, see a program of “Baltic Shorts\,” with live-action short films from Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania.  \nPORTRAIT OF GRANNY (Omamma) | Dir. Ieva Ozolina\n6 min. In Latvian with English subtitles (Latvia\, 2026)  \nPickles\, sweet tea\, strawberries and a warm smile. This is how we are greeted by director Ieva Ozoliņa’s grandmother\, Aina—an 88-year-young woman. Health concerns and medication\, which she jokingly calls “narcotics\,” have become inseparable parts of her everyday life. Yet Aina’s outlook on life is surprisingly light: there is no shortage of understanding\, humor\, or ability to laugh at herself and the world around her. The five phrases she uses most often are her keys to a life lived to its fullest.  \nCONCRETE KIDS (Betono vaikai) | Dir. Saulius Baradinskas\n20 min. In Lithuanian with English subtitles (Lithuania\, 2026) \nThis short film tells the story of kids who grew up in the courtyards of the Soviet apartment district of Lithuania. Lacking the attention and love of their parents\, they needed to survive and free themselves from the violence in the streets every single day. \nMY FIRST FUNERAL (Manas pirmās bēres) | Dir. Līva Klepere \n15 min. In Latvian with English subtitles (Latvia\, 20260 \nMare looks at the world with wonder and curiosity. When her family gathers to mourn a recently deceased relative\, the eight-year-old girl finds herself in an unfamiliar world\, filled with dark clothing\, unknown traditions and incomprehensible emotions. The more she sees\, the less it makes sense to her. She opts instead for the company of her relative’s dog\, hiding in a pleasantly simple\, imagined reality. \nA MICROPHONE IN THE HEAD (Mikrofon peas) | Dir. Robert Raska Ly \n12:44 min. In Estonian with English subtitles (Estonia\, 2025) \nHilja discovers that Joonas\, who died in a car accident\, is able to contact her through a haunted karaoke microphone. To move on to the afterlife\, Joonas asks his heartbroken fiancée to visit his mother and deliver a final message—that he is gay.  \nSIGNAL PATH (Signalo kelias) | Dir. Eglė Razumaitė \n20 min. In Lithuanian/German/English with English subtitles (Lithuania/Germany\, 2026) \nLiepa and her daughter move to Germany in search of a fresh start\, but soon have to deal with her family’s disapproval and the challenges of metropolitan life. Director Eglė Razumaitė states: “My intention with this short film was to highlight the shift in the sex industry and to ask: How do we redefine prostitution on screen? Despite societies moving toward legal and political recognition of sex workers\, we still tend to stigmatize\, discriminate against\, and violate their rights.” \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:A GOODNIGHT KISS | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:See a screening of A Goodnight Kiss (Irena) in the the 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF). \nA Goodnight Kiss is an homage to a remarkable woman\, Irena Veisaitė\, and her unabating spirit. As Irena turns 92 in 2020\, birthday greetings pour in for one of Lithuania’s wisest women\, much adored in its intellectual and cultural circles. The Nazi occupation cut her childhood short at just age 13\, robbing her of her birth mother and imprisoning her in a ghetto. Then came another occupation\, by the Soviets\, which took away her “second mother\,” who had saved her from the Nazis and raised her like one of her own. Yet having survived these horrors of two of the 20th-century’s most brutal totalitarian regimes\, Irena came out on the other side\, believing in a life free of hatred.  \nSet in Vilnius\, once dubbed the Jerusalem of the North\, the film crafts a nuanced portrait of Irena as a testimony to her humanity and courage to live and forgive. Following Irena’s passing later in 2020\, Giedrė Žickytė found new ways to tell her story\, drawing on unseen testimonies and rare archives such as clandestine photos captured inside a ghetto. Woven into the narrative is music by her lifelong friend\, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt\, who dedicated his acclaimed piano piece Für Alina to Irena as a gesture of solace\, echoing Irena’s own experience of motherhood and the longing she felt for her daughter Alina during the years they were apart. \nIn today’s fracturing world\, Irena’s wisdom may be the guiding light we need. \nPurchase Tickets

Across four seasons in Latvia\, the airport’s bird and wildlife control specialists—nicknamed “Scarecrows”—guide us through a chronicle of the flow of work and nature\, reminding us that fences are built for humans\, but cannot protect the lives of everyone and every kind. \n“A contemplative and intriguing documentary on a life less lived\, quietly hidden from the public eye\, and ignored by the travelers who need the team’s service the most” (East European Film Bulletin) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:OPENING NIGHT: A GOODNIGHT KISS | NYBFF
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences! Opening Night on Thursday\, November 5 will feature the East Coast Premiere of A Goodnight Kiss (Irena)\, with director Giedrė Žickytė present for a film talk and Q&A. \nThe film will re-screen on Saturday\, November 7 at 12:00 PM.

SUMMARY:QUEEN BY BIRGITTA TROTZIG | NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On November 3\, 2026\, we’ll discuss visionary Swedish writer Birgitta Trotzig’s mythic\, modernist classic\, Queen\, a long-awaited rediscovery now in translation by Saskia Vogel from Archipelago Books. \nBirgitta Trotzig’s 1964 novella is the story of a girl named Judit who is stubborn and singular\, distant and unyielding. She has a love of lilies. She is called Queen. Her entire world exists within Bäck\, a village in the south of Sweden so named because a brook bends through it. At the age of nine\, Judit’s mother falls ill during childbirth and passes Judit the strong little body of her brother Viktor. A sharp gleam springs forth from Viktor’s pale-blue infant eyes\, and the two are bonded for life. Together with their wordless brother Albert (one who prefers the warm silence of animals)\, Viktor\, Albert\, and Judit form a precarious family. In dark and mystical waves of language\, Judit’s inner life is awakened to the reader. She has her secrets. The Queen prizes her alias like a precious gemstone; she dreams one day that the master gardener at Trolle Ljungby Castle will select her very own flower bulbs for planting; and she holds suspicions like hot stones to her heart. When Viktor decides to emigrate to the United States\, the ground beneath Judit’s feet forever shifts. \nThe English-language discovery of Birgitta Trotzig\, one of the greatest Swedish writers of all time\, is long overdue. Her dark\, spiritual writings construct a truth and vision all her own. Trotzig’s characters are ordinary and troubled\, their lives barren and merciless\, but an otherworldly light sweeps across them\, making them stand with spectacular clarity. \nQueen is available in paperback and ebook from Archipelago Books\, Bookshop.org and other retailers. \nRegister

SUMMARY:NO COMMENT | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:“A sharp and entertaining satire with a biting edge” —On October 28\, see the political satire No Comment! In his newest film\, Norwegian director Petter Næss (Elling) takes aim at a political establishment willing to sacrifice both morality and truth to save its own skin and hold on to power. \nAs the election approaches\, sitting Prime Minister Alma Solvik (Laila Goody) hopes for renewed trust from voters when it is revealed that her husband Sondre (Anders Baasmo) has made a series of lucrative stock deals during her time in office. With accusations of insider trading and conflicts of interest\, Sondre becomes the perfect scapegoat in a high-stakes political circus. To contain the brewing media storm\, Alma and her embattled spin doctor Karianne Moen (Pia Tjelta) orchestrate a bold strategy to protect her and her party’s reputation — whatever it takes. \nDirector Petter Næss and screenwriter Ståle Stein Berg draw inspiration from real-life political scandals — not least the stock trading scandal involving Norway’s former Prime Minister Erna Solberg and her husband\, Sindre Finnes. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SCANDINAVIAN EVERYDAY COOKING | FOOD DEMO & BOOK TALK
DESCRIPTION:Join Scandinavia House and Björk Café & Bistro on October 25 for a food demo and book talk by Nichole Accettola\, the chef behind San Francisco’s beloved Kantine\, to celebrate the release of her book Scandinavian Everyday! Recipes demonstrated from Scandinavian Everyday will include mung bean fritters with goat chese\, harvest braise\, and flødeboller (Danish meringue puffs). \nIn Scandinavian Everyday: Vibrant\, Simple Meals from Northern Europe (Ten Speed Press\, 5/19/2026)\, chef and IACP award-winning author Nichole Accettola presents contemporary Scandinavian cooking as it is truly lived: uncomplicated\, practical\, and deeply connected to the rhythms of daily life. Drawing inspiration from the cuisines of Denmark\, Norway\, and Sweden\, the book offers bright\, pared-back recipes made with whole grains\, vegetables\, and thoughtfully sourced meat and fish\, all adapted for the American kitchen and grocery store. \nAfter spending years working in Italian and French restaurant kitchens\, Accettola made the move to Copenhagen\, Denmark\, ready to embrace a new pace of life. While diving deep into the world of Scandinavian food\, she found that her approach to cooking was entirely reframed. It was no longer about making elaborate dishes to impress restaurant diners\, it was centered around connection: to the seasons\, to the people at the table\, and to the place she was living.  \nMuch like the food served at Kantine\, the recipes in Scandinavian Everyday are rooted in tradition\, but have been updated to reflect the way we cook and eat now. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:BUILDING LESS\, TRANSFORMING MORE | ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN PANEL
DESCRIPTION:As the built environment faces growing challenges related to climate change\, resource use\, and urban development\, architecture is increasingly turning its attention toward renovation\, adaptation\, and reuse. Building Less\, Transforming More brings together Nordic and American perspectives on how we can move beyond demolition and replacement toward a more responsible approach to building. \nPresented in conjunction with the Nordic Consulates General in New York and the OBEL Foundation as part of Archtober 2026\, this program explores how existing buildings can become resources for creativity\, cultural continuity\, and long-term value. \nThe afternoon features two connected conversations. Nordic Practice Dialogue brings together architectural voices from Denmark\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Norway to discuss how transformation and reuse are shaping contemporary architectural practice. The second session\, From Practice to Systemic Change\, expands the discussion to examine the broader conditions that influence the future of the built environment — including policy\, investment\, regulation\, and public responsibility. \nRather than focusing solely on sustainability as a technical challenge\, Building Less\, Transforming More explores transformation as an architectural and cultural opportunity: how we can care for what already exists\, create new value from inherited structures\, and imagine cities built around adaptation rather than replacement. \nJoin architects\, designers\, policymakers\, researchers\, and anyone interested in the future of our cities for an afternoon of conversation and exchange during Archtober 2026. \nYou can RSVP HERE.

SUMMARY:TELL EVERYONE | SCREENING & FILM TALK
DESCRIPTION:“A compelling and ultimately compassionate story”—On October 21\, see the striking period drama Tell Everyone! Director Alli Haapasalo and lead actress Marketta Tikkanen will be present for a Q&A following the screening. \nOn a remote island where troublesome women are sent to be forgotten\, an emotionally charged struggle for liberation unfolds in a dazzlingly beautiful and deeply moving historical drama. \n\nThe year is 1898\, and Amanda (Marketta Tikkanen) arrives at an institution on the island of Seili in the Finnish archipelago\, where he has been committed after living a wandering\, decadent life marked by episodes of “madness” once a month caused by severe menstrual pain. Amanda considers her stay on the island strictly temporary\, but as she begins to form bonds with the other women\, doubt takes root. Marketta Tikkanen shines in the lead role\, supported by Alma Pöysti\, Krista Kosonen and Aamu Milonoff\, who together create a richly layered gallery of female fates in a genuinely affecting drama. Alli Haapasalo\, the director of the acclaimed Girl Picture (2022)\,  takes the female body’s built-in violence and imbues that bottled up fury into 19th-century Finland. \n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:HAMPUS ÖHMAN-FRÖLUND: MOTVALSEN
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 15 for an unforgettable evening with Hampus Öhman-Frölund as he plays selections from his new solo record\, “Motvalsen”! \n“Motvalsen” (2026) is the first drums / percussion solo record from NYC-based Swedish drummer Hampus Öhman-Frölund. Blending acoustic percussion with electronics\, samples\, and instruments from Sweden\, the album explores his experience of leaving home\, building a life in New York in his mid-twenties\, and finding new ways to engage with his cultural roots in the diaspora. Inspired by the textures and spirit of Scandinavian folk music—without claiming a place within that tradition—Motvalsen presents a deeply personal electro-acoustic meditation on memory\, distance\, and transnational belonging.\n\nPurchase tickets

SUMMARY:HOME SWEET HOME | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:On October 14\, see the warmly rendered drama Home Sweet Home! Single mother Sofie starts a new career as a caretaker for the elderly\, only to be humbled by the toll it takes on her physical and mental state\, in this authentic and rewarding glimpse at the uncelebrated world of healthcare workers from director Frelle Petersen. \nWe meet Sofie (Jette Søndergaard) as she begins her new elder-care job in a small Danish city. Each day\, she travels from flat to flat\, helping with bathing\, cooking\, cleaning bed sores\, changing linens\, and—most importantly—just chatting with lonely patients who feel abandoned. The recently divorced Sofie also struggles to raise her taciturn young daughter\, Clara. Sofie’s even temperament is well-suited for her demanding tasks\, but she is also subject to intense pressures of staff shortages and rudeness. When one of her client’s relatives lambastes her for alleged ineptitude\, Sofie begins questioning her ability to maintain intimate connections with patients\, co-workers\, and even her own family. \nPurchase Tickets
