Initially ambitious about their plans to transform the desolate and neglected land and raise an heir\, Andres and Krõõt are beset by challenges: nature refuses to bend to their will; an uncooperative neighbor becomes a vicious rival; and Krõõt gives birth to daughter after daughter instead of Andres’ longed-for son. As Andres struggles\, his dream of nurturing a prosperous farm on Robber’s Rise turns into an obsession. And in his desperate search for truth and justice — from the court\, to the tavern\, to the Bible — he may end up sacrificing more than he had ever planned. In 2019\, Truth and Justice was shortlisted for the International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.  Directed by Tanel Toom (2019\, Estonia. In Estonian with English subtitles) 146 min. \n\n\n \nOleg /Oļegs \nOleg is a young Russian-speaking butcher from Latvia who doesn’t have Latvian citizenship. With the desire of making more money\, he sets his sights on Europe and eventually arrives in Brussels hoping to get a job at an abattoir. Alone in a new country\, he is unjustly fired and unable to find new work when he falls in with a couple of Polish guest workers\, tempted by their promises of construction work and a passport. Oleg soon comes to realize that he’s in over his head and finds himself in an increasingly claustrophobic position. Gritty and uncompromising\, Oleg highlights the perilous situation that migrant workers and stateless citizens can quickly find themselves in as industrious criminals fill in the gaps in local social systems. Premiering at Directors’ Fortnight as part of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival\, Oleg is director Juris Kursietis’ (Modris) second film.  (2019\, Latvia / Belgium / Lithuania / France.  In English with some Russian\, Polish\, Latvian\, French and Flemish with English Subtitles) 108 min. \n \nThe Lawyer /Advokatas \nLife is slowly passing corporate lawyer Marius by and he spends most of his time at dinner parties and chasing young lovers. After the death of his estranged father\, Marius finds himself looking for answers and finds himself developing a surprising connection with sex-cam worker Ali – a bisexual Syrian refugee stuck in Belgrade. Relieved at finally having something to focus on\, Marius throws himself into helping Ali seek asylum in a more LGBTQ+-friendly country in Europe. Marius travels to Belgrade which deepens the mens’ connection and tests their internal and physical borders. What started as a distraction\, has blossomed into a tricky love affair leading Marius to question his privilege and his priorities. The Lawyer is a unique Lithuanian drama that premiered at the 2020 BFI Flare Film Festival. Directed by Romas Zabarauskas\, (2020 Lithuania.  In Lithuanian and English with English subtitles) 97 min.

SUMMARY:NYBFF Virtual Film Panel: A Year in Film through Baltic Eyes
DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the final weekend of the New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House as a virtual event\, join us for a Virtual Panel with five Baltic film professionals\, “A Year in Film Through Baltic Eyes.” \nExperiencing life and art in the U.S. and in the Baltic States has been different over the past year\, as European restrictions on cultural production and in-person events have been more relaxed throughout the summer and fall. In this discussion\, find out exactly how the Baltic film industries and viewers have dealt with unexpected challenges. \nWe’ll hear from five representatives offering a broad understanding of the Lithuanian\, Latvian and Estonian film industries — from an art house cinema to international filmmakers\, from a festival to a national film center — to hear what trials\, joys\, and solutions this past year has brought\, and how this has changed the industry and audiences! \nPanelists include Rain Rannu (filmmaker\, Chasing Unicorns\, Estonia)\, Māris Prombergs (Director\, cinema Kino Bize\, Latvia)\, Paula Bērziņa (Head of Industry and Film Distribution\, Riga International Film Festival\, Latvia)\, Dovilė Butnoriūtė (Head of the Department of Film Promotion\, Lithuanian Film Center\, Lithuania)\, and Tomas Vengris (filmmaker\, Motherland\, U.S./Lithuania)\, moderated by NBFF Head of Promotion Marija Silk. \nThe event will take place as a Zoom webinar; register at the link above to watch the discussion. \nThe panel coincides with the final session of the New York Baltic Film Festival. Session passes to NYBFF: LOOKING INWARD & FORWARD are available here.

SUMMARY:Companions by Alexandra Kleeman
DESCRIPTION:**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. Register here to sign up for the meeting; registrants will receive a web link to where the meeting will take place. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \n\n\nOn November 17\, we’ll be discussing Companions by Alexandra Kleeman\, described as “a blend of arresting detail\, digression\, and erudition tinged with nostalgia” (Kirkus Reviews) with”vivid imagery and unexpected humor” (New York Times). Camilla\, Charles\, Alma\, Edward\, Alwilda and Kristian are a circle of friends hurtling through mid-life. Structured as a series of monologues jumping from one friend to the next\, Companions follows their loves\, ambitions\, pains and anxieties as they age\, fall sick\, have affairs\, grieve\, host dinner parties and move between the Lake District\, Berlin\, Lisbon\, Belgrade\, Mozambique\, New York and\, of course\, Denmark. \nIn her first book to be translated into English\, Christina Hesselholdt explores everyday life\, the weight of the past and the difficulty of intimacy in a uniquely playful and experimental style. At once deeply comic and remarkably insightful\, Companions is an exhilarating portrait of life in the twenty-first century. \n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:TASTE OF ICELAND: WOMAN AT WAR /Kona fer í stríð
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in its history\, Taste of Iceland is going virtual! From November 18-22\, Iceland Naturally invites you to experience Icelandic culture during the online Taste of Iceland festival. The festival highlights the very best of Iceland’s culture\, showcasing the nation’s cuisine\, music\, literature\, and film through several live streamed events. As part of these celebrations\, Scandinavia House is proud to serve as the virtual venue for a cinematic presentation of Woman at War. \nBehind the scenes of her quiet routine\, the independent 50-year-old Halla leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. Known to others only by her alias “The Woman of the Mountain\,” Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminium industry. As Halla’s actions grow bolder\, from petty vandalism to outright industrial sabotage\, she succeeds in pausing the negotiations between the Icelandic government and the corporation building a new aluminium smelter in the mountains. \nBut right as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet\, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything: Her application to adopt a child has finally been accepted\, and a little girl is waiting for her in Ukraine. \nAs Halla prepares to abandon her role as saboteur and savior of the Highlands to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother\, she decides to plot one final attack to deal the aluminium industry a crippling blow. Directed by Benedikt Erlingsson (100 min. In Icelandic with English subtitles.) \nOn Sunday\, November 22 at 4 PM ET\, director Benedikt Erlingsson will join us for a Virtual Film Talk on Woman at War.  \nRegister

SUMMARY:POLAR TALES: VIRTUAL BOOK TALK WITH MELISSA SCHÄFER & FREDRIK GRANATH
DESCRIPTION:American-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual book talk with photographer Melissa Schäfer & producer Fredrik Granath on their new book Polar Tales: The Future of Ice\, Life\, and the Arctic\, out now from Rizzoli Press. \nThe Arctic is the ground zero of climate change\, and the polar bear is on the front line. Filled with groundbreaking photography that reveals the breathtaking landscapes of the Arctic and the changing environment through the lives of polar bears\, Polar Tales is a firsthand report from the top of our planet. It tells a story about an ice world in transformation\, and a planet within reach of its tipping point—the irreversible moment when the climate on Earth begins collapsing. \nPolar Tales is both a celebration of the wildlife that inhabits the most harsh and unforgiving yet beautiful environment imaginable—mountains\, fjords\, enormous glaciers\, and the seemingly endless pack ice of the Arctic Ocean—and a cautionary tale of global warming; as rising temperatures have put areas such as the Arctic at risk\, the habitats and lives of the animals there are increasingly threatened. Set against a dramatic landscape of ice floes and ragged mountains\, the book’s photographs feature polar bears\, foxes\, seals\, walruses\, and reindeer that now struggle to live in this vulnerable climate. Images of a polar bear mother as she takes her newborns out for their first hunt\, a seal pup only hours old\, and the spectacle of the polar night are all reminders of what is at risk. \nSchäfer and Granath will discuss the book\, as well as their work on months spent in the field every winter on expeditions\, where they live among the polar bears\, establishing an uneasy balance and unprecedented access to the world of the kings of the Arctic. \nThe event will take place as a Zoom webinar\, and will begin with a video presentation with Schäfer and Granath followed by a discussion and an audience Q&A. Please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \nPolar Tales: The Future of Ice\, Life\, and the Arctic is available now from Rizzoli and also for sale on Schäfer and Granath’s Motherbear website. \n  \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:The Brahmadells by Jóanes Nielsen
DESCRIPTION:TUE—December 8—6 PM\, free \n**This event has now been moved to December 8.** \n**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n  \nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! \nOn December 8\, we’ll be discussing The Brahmadells by Jóanes Nielsen\, translated to English by Kerri A. Pierce\, who recently joined us for the virtual panel Faroese Authors You Should Know. \nOne of the first Faroese books to be translated into English\, The Brahmadellsis an epic novel chronicling the lives of a particular family—nicknamed “the Brahmadells”—against the larger history of the Faroe Islands\, from the time of Danish rule\, through its national awakening\, to its independence. \nFilled with colorful characters and various family intrigues\, the novel incorporates a number of genres and styles as it shifts from individual stories to larger world issues. There are historical documents\, including nineteenth-century medical journals\, documents detailing the lives of real historical figures\, digressions about religion\, a measles outbreak\, and many other travails\, large and small. Epic in its scope\, importance\, and literary approach\, The Brahmadells is a playful\, engrossing look at life in an island nation whose rich history is relatively unknown to most English readers. \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Virtual St. Lucia Celebration With Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz
DESCRIPTION:SUN—December 13—2 PM ET \nOn Sunday\, December 13\, join us for a virtual St. Lucia celebration with Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz! \nThe Scandinavian Christmas season begins each year with a celebration of St. Lucia on December 13\, as a way of bringing hope and light during the darkest time of the year. Named for the early Roman Christian martyr Saint Lucia — who\, according to Swedish legend\, arrived “clothed in white and crowned with light” on the shore in Värmland to distribute food and clothing to the needy during a great famine — Saint Lucia’s feast day merged with earlier traditions in Scandinavia to celebrate the winter solstice. Today\, it is celebrated with a procession in which a chosen Saint Lucia wears a white gown with a wreath of candles on her head to sing traditional Swedish Lucia and Christmas songs\, joined by handmaidens and star boys\, sometimes also followed by children dressed as tomtar (elves) and pepparkaksgubbar (gingerbread men). \nEach year\, Scandinavia House has shared in this tradition with processions from members of the Swedish Church Choir in New York\, who join us in traditional Lucia gowns with candles to sing Scandinavian and American holiday carols such as the “Sankta Lucia” at various events. \nThis year\, we’ll be taking the tradition virtual with a discussion and Q&A on the St. Lucia celebrations with Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz\, a singer in the Swedish Church Choir and actress with the Scandinavian American Theater Company\, who has led the performances at Scandinavia House each year. Following the discussion\, we’ll present a new video of one of their 2019 performances with us on Park Avenue\, featuring singers Anne Walden Widegren\, Katja Otero\, Maria Bergenhem\, Michaela Lind\, with Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz. \nThe event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please register at the link above to join us and watch. Questions can be shared with us in the chat during the event\, or sent in advance to info@amscan.org. \nAbout the Speaker\nIngrid Kullberg-Bendz is a Swedish-born actor\, singer and contemporary dancer\, who worked in all the major theaters in Sweden for several years\, and toured many countries in different productions\, before settling in NYC. She was a member of the original Swedish cast of the musicals Mamma Mia and Chess\, working closely with the composers\, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of Abba fame. \nIn New York\, Ingrid has worked off-Broadway\, in film and television\, (most recently in the Oscar nominated film First Reformed with Ethan Hawke) and in voice over. She is a core member of Scandinavian American Theater Company\, a singer in the Swedish Church Choir and she is also an adjunct Swedish teacher at NYU. Ingrid is very passionate about her Scandinavian cultural heritage and embraces every opportunity to share it. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Virtual Studio Visit with Camilla Vuorenmaa
DESCRIPTION:SUN—December 20—2 PM ET \n**This event will take place via YouTube & Facebook Premiere; check back closer to the date for links/viewing instructions.** \n \nWatch on Facebook \nJoin us on Sunday\, December 20 at 2 PM ET for a Virtual Studio Visit with acclaimed Finnish painter Camilla Vuorenmaa! In this event\,  Vuorenmaa invites ASF into her Helsinki live-work studio to discuss her latest carved wood painting series\, based on her recent exploration into the Spiritualist movement in the United States. With a hybrid sculpture-painting style that requires both time and physical strength to create\, Vuorenmaa challenges the physical and traditional boundaries of painting. Using a style that is rough and unvarnished\, yet endowed with a sensitive brush stroke and striking palette\, her work reveals an expressive\, vibrant approach to eclectic subject matter of myth\, folklore\, and persistent faith in contemporary life. \nThe program will take place as a Virtual Premiere on both Facebook and YouTube; set reminders at the links above to either platform to watch and chat with us during the program. \nThis event is the second in a series of Virtual Studio Tours from Scandinavia House. See the previous tour with Pekka and Teija Isorättyä here.

SUMMARY:TASTE OF ICELAND: WOMAN AT WAR — VIRTUAL FILM PANEL

Silja Hauksdóttir). 92 min. In Icelandic with English subtitles.\nSee the trailer \nTrapped in a job she hates and a marriage that’s slowly dying\, Rannveig’s burnout on her mundane suburban life is complicated by fights with her rebellious daughter Agnes\, along with the impending likelihood that Agnes will soon grow up and leave her behind. For Agnes\, making her own way in the world means finding a way to escape the tension at home\, and experiencing freedom for herself. When a handsome new neighbor\, Hreinn\, shows up on their doorstep\, both mother and daughter have an exciting new distraction from their issues. But when he begins to charm them both and develop different attachments to each\, Rannveig and Agnes must navigate a whole new set of challenges. \n“Simple and plain\, but yet so overwhelmingly vast and deep that one is without words… Amazing.”—Fréttablaðið \nAnother Round/Druk (Denmark\, 2020; dir. Thomas Vinterberg). 115 min. In Danish with English subtitles.\nSee the trailer \nFour friends\, all teachers at various stages of middle age\, are stuck in a rut. Unable to share their passions either at school or at home\, they embark on an audacious experiment from an obscure philosopher: to see if a constant level of alcohol in their blood will help them find greater freedom and happiness. At first they each find a new-found zest\, but as the gang pushes their experiment further\, issues that have been simmering for years come to a head and the men are faced with a choice: reckon with their behavior or continue on the same course. \nUnderscored by delicate and affecting camerawork\, director Thomas Vinterberg’s spry script\, co-written with regular collaborator Tobias Lindholm\, uses this bold premise to explore the euphoria and pain of an unbridled life. Playing a once brilliant but now world-weary shell of a man\, the ever surprising Mads Mikkelsen delivers a fierce and touching performance. \n“Thomas Vinterberg’s absorbing dark comedy turns into a lively and fascinating referendum on booze\, with Mads Mikkelsen’s fierce and unsettling performance vibrating at its center.”—IndieWire; “Thomas Vinterberg has made a truly wonderful movie about trying to come to grips with life\, anchored by terrific performances from Mads Mikkelsen\, Thomas Bo Larsen\, Magnus Millang\, and Lars Ranthe. It’s funny\, and gutting\, and great.”—Vox; “One of the director’s most absorbing works”—The New Yorker \nBlizzard of Souls /Dvēseļu putenis (Latvia\, 2019; dir. Dzintars Dreibergs). 120 minutes. In Latvian with English subtitles.\nSee the trailer \nAfter witnessing the death of his mother at the hands of invading Germans\, 16-year-old Artūrs\, together with his father\, decides to enlist in the national Latvian Riflemen battalions of the Imperial Russian army\, hoping for revenge and glory. Though he is underage\, Artūrs goes on with his father and brother to fight in World War I\, where the thrill of training is soon followed by reality\, as the shells burst around them and their lives are constantly in jeopardy. Adapted from the book by Aleksandrs Grins\, which was banned in the U.S.S.R.\, the story was based on Grins’ own war experiences in a Latvian battalion\, and has been the biggest box office success in Latvia in the past 30 years. Blizzard of Souls pays stark witness to the horrors and brutality of the First World War\, as seen through the eyes of an innocent 17-year-old farm-boy turned soldier. \n“Atmospheric cinematography…A more realistic 1917″—The Hollywood Reporter \nThe Last Ones /Viimased (Estonia/Finland\, 2020; dir. Veiko Õunpuu). 117 minutes. In Finnish with English subtitles.\nSee the trailer\nSupported by the Estonian Ministry of Culture \nA Nordic western set in the untamed Lapland tundra\, The Last Ones follows young miner Rupi\, who hopes to scrape together enough money escape the suffocating dust of his village. But when work comes to a halt after Rupi’s reindeer herder father refuses to sell his land — and when the manipulative mine owner sets aims on the wife of Rupi’s friend\, whom Rupi is also secretly in love with — life in the mining village becomes more dangerous day by day\, forcing him to examine where and to whom he belongs. Is it the tundra of his forefathers\, or the cold terrain of personal gain? With Veiko Õunpuu’s characteristic crispness\, The Last Ones explores the messiness of human nature and fate. \n“Vividly conveys a sense of place and of a faltering way of life…a naturalistic account of the hard-partying\, hard-working mining community”—ScreenDaily \nMy Dear Corpses/Mu kallid laibad (Estonia\, 2020; dir. German Golub). 34 min. In Estonian and Russian with English subtitles.\nScreening with The Last Ones \nUnexpectedly evicted from his house\, Erki faces a rather difficult task to take care of his lonely mother: becoming a corpse carrier. But the situation is about to get a whole lot worse\, as Erki meets a new colleague who sees the job as just another day in the field. Made by Baltic Film\, Media\, Arts and Communication School students\, My Dear Corpses was a gold medal winner at the Student Academy Awards.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Talk — The Women I Think About at Night With Mia Kankimäki & Heli Serviö
DESCRIPTION:TUE—January 7—1 PM ET \n*This program will take place as a virtual event* \nOn January 7\, Mia Kankimäki joins us for a book talk of her The Women I Think About at Night: Traveling the Paths of My Heroes\, out now in translation by Douglas Robinson! With moderator Heli Serviö\, Mia Kankimäki will discuss her new novel blending travelogue\, memoir\, and biography as she recounts her travels around the world to retrace the steps of ten remarkable female pioneers from history. \nBored with her life and feeling stuck in her mid-40s\, Mia Kankimäki decided to leave her job\, sell her apartment\, and travel the world to follow the paths of  female explorers and artists from history who inspired her. From Tanzania and Kenya\, she sought out the location where Karen Blixen of Out of Africa lived in the 1920s;  in Japan\, Mia attempted to cure her depression while researching famed contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama\, who has voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital for decades. In Italy\, Mia searched for the works of forgotten Renaissance women painters of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence\, finally finding  her heroines in the portraits of Sofonisba Anguissola\, Lavinia Fontana\, and Artemisia Gentileschi. If these women could make it in the world hundreds of years ago\, why can’t Mia? \nThe Women I Think About at Night is part travelogue and part thrilling exploration of the lost women adventurers of history who defied expectations in order to see—and change—the world. \nThe event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. The book was released on November 10 from Simon & Schuster. Mia Kankimäki is represented by Elina Ahlback Literary Agency and her book will be published in 17 languages; read more and see how to purchase here. \nRegister
