DESCRIPTION:On April 17\, American-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual talk with photographer Anne Helene Gjelstad on her documentary book Big Heart\, Strong Hands\, out now from Dewi Lewis Publishing. She will be joined by moderator & photographer Erika Larsen (Sàmi: Walking with Reindeer).  \nBig Heart\, Strong Hands is the story of the women on the Estonian islands Kihnu and Manija in the Baltic Sea. Geographically isolated\, over centuries a strong sense of community spirit and a steadfast attachment to their ancestor’s customs has developed. Often viewed as the last matriarchal society in Europe\, the women here take care of almost everything on land as their husbands travel the seas. \nGjelstad has photographed the daily lives and activities of the women\, their clothing\, bedrooms\, kitchens and farmhouses as well as the surrounding landscape ­– even a ceremony in a deceased person’s kitchen only three hours after she had passed away. She has also interviewed the women about their lives\, struggles and losses and their thoughts on the future. We learn of the development of this unique society\, the harsh conditions it endured over many decades as part of the Soviet Union\, as well as its culture and folk dressing customs. These are the hushed voices of culture bearers who need to be heard\, for this is a small society rapidly moving towards Western standards\, and where traditional culture and identity is inevitably slipping away. \nIn today’s event\, Gjelstad and Larsen will discuss the work over the past 11 years that went into the project\, as well as the lives and culture it portrays; including the matriarchal order of the islands\, their work with textiles\, and the preservation of the society. They will also discuss how to work on such lengthy and immersive projects\, and how to be able to gain access to and build connections in closed societies. \nThis event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The ninth session of the series from April 23-29 features the film Games People Play /Seurapeli (Finland\, 2020; dir. Jenni Toivoniemi). \nA comedy about the tragedy of remaining forever young\, Games People Play takes place over the course of a nostalgic weekend\, when an old group of friends gathers to celebrate Mitzi’s birthday at an idyllic seaside villa — just as they did as teenagers. DESCRIPTION:TUE—January 26—7 PM \nREGISTER \nAmerican-Scandinavian Foundation invites you to a virtual panel discussion on Tove Ditlevsen’s The Copenhagen Trilogy\, in celebration of its publication in English translation by Tiina Nunnally and Michael Favala Goldman beginning January 26. In this event\, translator Michael Favala Goldman and authors Morten Høi Jensen (A Difficult Death)\, Rachel Kushner (The Mars Room)\, and Ben Lerner (The Topeka School) will discuss this courageous and honest trilogy from literary icon Tove Ditlevsen\, a pioneer in the field of genre-bending confessional writing\, explores themes of family\, sex\, motherhood\, abortion\, addiction\, and being an artist. \nTove Ditlevsen is today celebrated as one of the most important and unique voices in 20th-century Danish literature. Born in a working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen in 1917\, Ditlevsen became famous for her poetry while still a teenager\, and went on to write novels\, stories and memoirs before committing suicide in 1976. Having been dismissed by the critical establishment in her lifetime as a working-class\, female writer\, she is now being rediscovered and championed as one of Denmark’s most important modern authors\, with “Tove fever” gripping readers\, and  The Copenhagen Trilogy (1969–71) is her acknowledged masterpiece. \nChildhood tells the story of a misfit child’s single-minded determination to become a poet; Youth describes her early experiences of sex\, work\, and independence. Dependency picks up the story as the narrator embarks on the first of her four marriages and goes on to describe her horrible descent into drug addiction\, enabled by her sinister\, gaslighting doctor-husband. Throughout\, the narrator grapples with the tension between her vocation as a writer and her competing roles as daughter\, wife\, mother\, and drug addict\, and she writes about female experience and identity in a way that feels very fresh and pertinent to today’s discussions around feminism. \nDitlevsen’s trilogy is remarkable for its intensity and its immersive depiction of a world of complex female friendships\, family and growing up―in this sense\, it’s Copenhagen’s answer to Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels. She can also be seen as a spiritual forerunner of confessional writers like Karl Ove Knausgaard\, Annie Ernaux\, Rachel Cusk and Deborah Levy. Special guest Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz (Scandinavian American Theater Company) will introduce Beskow’s world of beautiful illustrations and children’s literature\, which Swedish children have grown up with for over 100 years\, and have since made the author known internationally as the “Beatrix Potter” of Sweden. As a young child Beskow would spend hours drawing trees and flowers in spring and summer\, gaining a wide knowledge of plants and flowers that she later carried through to her illustrations\, while retaining a child’s pure and wondrous view of nature. She has long been celebrated at the Children’s Center\, including in the 2011 exhibition A Child’s Adventure in the Swedish Countryside: A Storybook Installation. \nIn today’s event\, Ingrid Kullberg-Bendz will introduce her work with examples of illustrations\, followed by a virtual art workshop based on Beskow’s literature! \nThe video will premiere at 11 AM ET on May 1 on this page and via YouTube and Facebook; links to set reminders to watch will be added here closer to the date\, or stream directly on this page starting then through Saturday\, May 8. \n

Henrik Schyffert). \nThe autobiographical story of Uje Brandelius\, a family father\, radio host and keyboard player in his pop band Doktor Kosmos\, Run Uje Run stars Uje and his family in their initially harmonious and ordinary suburban life outside Stockholm: where family dinners\, homework\, negotiation on drop-offs to the kindergarten\, and his daughter’s chess and fencing training are their main concerns. But Uje finds himself faced with a life-changing crisis upon learning that he has Parkinson’s disease — which he at first keeps as a secret\, while also reflecting on many of the the big questions in life. As he starts to put himself around people and situations he would not otherwise be in\, taking chances that end in embarrassment and unexpected comedy\, his unusual behavior sparks conflicts at home and at work. \nA warm comedy where everyday scenes and pop music are woven together against the backdrop of heavier future prospects\, Run Uje Run is about the turns that life takes after being diagnosed with a disease; what you have to catch up to in life\, and what you do not.
