DESCRIPTION:Learn about Nordic art in this hands-on\, in-person drawing course pairing brief informal lectures on celebrated Nordic artists with guided transcription and drawing exercises. In Swedish 1.3\, students will continue to perfect their previous learned skills and pronunciation\, while also expanding into more complex sentence structure. Author Elin Anna Labba will be joined by a moderator to delve into her debut novel\, a haunting\, multigenerational saga of a family of Sámi women fighting the devastation of their way of life. \nNothing is true\, and everything is true; poetry will never hurt more than what has happened. Every summer\, Iŋgá\, her mother Rávdná\, and her Aunt Ánne travel west to their village on the lake. But the summer Iŋgá is thirteen\, they arrive to find their home and possessions have disappeared under water\, the land flooded by a dam built to supply hydropower to a society that has continually stolen from them. \nThe Home of the Drowned follows these women’s fortunes over forty years—from 1942 to 1982—as the water their people have lived near for centuries is transformed into a menacing force that threatens all they hold dear. Defying the authorities\, Rávdná decides to build a proper house on the lake to replace what was lost\, becoming an unlikely activist even as her actions isolate her family from the rest of the community. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by trend forecaster Li Edelkoort’s prediction that “Extravagant Brooches” are trending\, we’ll make one ourselves! Join celebrated textile and performance artist Heidi Hankaniemi on a quest to repurpose vintage embroideries and sew a brooch on a backing of industrial felt with a brooch clasp. Materials are provided\, but if you have any old embroideries that you think are fitting and you wish to repurpose\, please bring those. Together\, we’ll create one-of-a-kind brooches by repurposing vintage floral embroideries and laces into wearable art. DESCRIPTION:Create your own felted nesting bowls in this workshop series led by Scandinavia House’s veteran knitter Hilary Snell! \nIn this 4-part series\, participants will learn how to cast on and knit in the round on double pointed needles to make a small\, knitted bowl. The first class will focus on the basics of how to use double pointed needles\, and the following classes will be spent following a simple pattern. Once the knitting is done\, students will take the bowls home to wash and felt them into household art! \nMaterials needed: \n• 1-2 skeins of Cascade 220 yarn (2 skeins are necessary for a contrast stripe on the bowl; if not\, just 1 skein will do). Whatever yarn you buy\, it must be 100% wool\, worsted or thicker. \n• A set of No. 10 US double pointed needles (dpns) \nStudents must feel very comfortable knitting and be willing to stretch into a new skill using double pointed needles. Skills required: casting on\, knitting\, decreasing stitches\, casting off. Barbara Sjoholm is an ASF Fellow and Translation Prize Winner whose lifelong work centers on Sámi culture and history. \nFrom the vast region of Northern Sápmi comes Sámi Folktales from the Near and Far Worlds\, the most extensive compilation of Sámi narratives recorded from Sámi storytellers ever published in English translation. Comprising more than 300 folktales and legends from Northern Norway\, including many from the coastal Sámi and the Skolt Sámi of Eastern Finnmark\, this volume illuminates an oral storytelling tradition and shares narratives told by fishers\, farmers\, reindeer herders\, lay preachers\, and teachers from the interior plateaus and valleys to the Arctic fjords. \nOriginally recorded in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by the Norwegian philologist Just Knud Qvigstad and the Sámi politician and folklorist Isak Saba\, this collection spans centuries of storytelling in multiple genres\, from migratory fairytales with kings and princesses to legends of ghosts and the Devil to fables with talking animals. On October 13 in coordination with West Nordic Film Days\, we’ll read On the Other Side is March by Sólrún Michelsen\, a poignant and darkly witty portrait of aging\, memory and multigenerational caretaking from the first female Faroese writer to ever appear in English. \nI’m a woman in my early sixties. Somewhere between late and never. No longer the career woman\, mother\, housewife\, and lover doing it all… Now I’m wife\, mother\, grandmother and my mother’s mother. But I still have to satisfy all the demands placed on me. \nSo begins Sólrún Michelsen’s tender and darkly witty exploration of what she considers to be the strange\, remaining leg of life’s journey. Her kids are grown and out of the house and she’s faced with a time that\, for years\, she always seemed to be looking toward—a time when she wasn’t needed by somebody or something. But now\, with her mother’s declining health\, she finds herself revisiting childhood scenes\, family hymns\, and folk songs—revealing a lifetime of love\, duty\, awe\, and regret. She tends to her mother amid the stark rhythms of Faroese life\, waiting for a new nursing home that never arrives\, and confronts the reality of being part of the “army of women” who inherit care. In her grief and private goodbye to her mother\, however\, is also a gorgeous meditation about life\, as translator Marita Thomsen says in her afterword\, “in its ragged mundane glory.” \nA lyrical portrait of caretaking and the invisible labor of motherhood\, On the Other Side Is March is a tribute to caretakers across generational lines\, as well as the the rich oral traditions of singing and storytelling that kept the Faroese language alive centuries before its standard written form. This is the first work of Michelsen’s—a best-selling author of novels\, short stories\, poetry\, and children’s literature—to be published in English. DESCRIPTION:Learn about Nordic art in this hands-on\, in-person drawing course pairing brief informal lectures on celebrated Nordic artists with guided transcription and drawing exercises. Each 2.5-hour session\, led by artist Charity Baker\, will begin with a 30-minute artist overview\, followed by demonstrations and 1.5 hours of drawing directly from works using graphite\, charcoal\, ink\, or colored pencils. This week\, we’ll turn our focus to Greenland. \nThis adult art workshop will deepen participants’ familiarity with key Scandinavian artists and art movements from 5 countries.
