SUMMARY:W.: A Novel — Virtual Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:On September 21\, August Prize-winning Swedish novelist Steve Sem-Sandberg & translator Saskia Vogel join us for a virtual discussion on W. A Novel\, out on June 28 from The Overlook Press! They’ll discuss the writing and translation of this new literary literary reimagining of one of modern literature’s touchstone texts — the play Woyzeck— hailed as a “sharp and hypersensitive novel about abandonment and violence…a fantastic\, spellbinding\, and terrifying book” (Dagens Nyheter).\n\n\n\n\nConsidered the first modern drama and based on true events\, Woyzeck tells the story of a loyal soldier and survivor of the Napoleonic Wars who\, in a fit of jealous rage\, kills the woman he loves\, written in 1836 by Georg Büchner and unfinished at his death at just 23 years old. Sem-Sandberg’s W grippingly recounts the lovers’ relationship\, the murder case\, and the execution\, unfolding as the soldier W. struggles to recount the events of his life. He grasps at understanding and experiences feelings of time and timelessness; he finds patterns and repetitions\, but these are of no interest to those determining his fate. \n\nBringing new light to this story from court documents from the original case\, Sem-Sandberg masterfully sustains a rich period atmosphere though poetic and controlled prose even down to the choice of pronouns\, as the soldier is held at a cold distance in court proceedings when addressed with the formal\, capitalized “You.” Against a landscape devastated by inhumanity and greed and\, yet\, which manages to sustain hope\, W. tells a ruthless\, moving\, and utterly relevant story of a soldier fighting to make something of the life given to him. This event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. This conversation will be recorded and available later to stream on our Virtual Programming page and on our YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:The Viking Heart — Virtual Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:This September\, join us for a new virtual book talk on The Viking Heart: How Scandinavians Conquered the World with Arthur Herman! Now out in paperback from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\, New York Times historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist Arthur Herman’s epic story of this remarkable and truly diverse people was acclaimed on its 2021 release as “a fresh and wholly engaging reassessment of the legendary Vikings” (Booklist) and “a fine history of a people who deserve more attention” (Kirkus Reviews). In a follow-up to his 2021 talk at Scandinavia House on the book’s release\, Arthur Herman returns to discuss themes that have gained new relevance over the past year — including recent archeological discoveries regarding the Viking legacy\, Finland and Sweden’s application to join NATO\, and the Viking context to the Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder. \nFor millennia Norwegians\, Danes\, Finns\, and Swedes lived a remote and rugged existence among the fjords and peaks of the land of the midnight sun. But when they finally left their homeland in search of opportunity\, these wanderers — including the most famous\, the Vikings — would reshape Europe and beyond. \nIn The Viking Heart\, Arthur Herman melds a compelling historical narrative with cutting-edge archaeological discoveries and DNA research to tell their story. He also explores how the Scandinavian experience has universal meaning\, and how we can still be inspired by their indomitable spirit and the strength of their community bonds — much needed in our deeply polarized society today. \nThis event will take place as a Zoom webinar. Please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. \n“Honestly assesses the results of the Vikings’ past actions around the world and makes an evenhanded argument for the importance of Viking culture in U.S. history…As we wrestle with how to make our world a better\, more equal place\, The Viking Heart provides a framework for recognizing the importance of the past in shaping our present and future”—BookPage \nAbout the Author\nArthur Herman is Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute and author of nine books\, including the New York Times bestseller How the Scots Invented the Modern World and Gandhi and Churchill. His novel Gandhi and Churchill was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He lives in Washington\, DC.

SUMMARY:The Last Wild Horses by Maja Lunde
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On September 13\, we’ll be discussing The Last Wild Horses by Norwegian author Maja Lunde\, out now in translation by Diane Oatley. \nTranslated into 40 languages and winner of the Norwegian Bookseller’s Prize\, Maja Lunde’s heart-wrenching new tale\, set in the distant past and the dystopian future\, explores extinction and survival\, family and hope. In Russia in 1881\, when the skeleton of a rare wild horse is brought to him\, zoologist Mikhail plans an expedition to Mongolia to find the fabled Przewalski horse\, a journey that tests not only his physicality\, but his heart. In 1992\, alongside her troubled son Mathias and several Przewalski horses that she has dedicated her life to saving\, veterinarian Karin travels to Mongolia to re-introduce the magnificent horses to their native land. \nIn 2062\, Europe’s future is uncertain — but Eva is willing to sacrifice nearly everything to hold onto her family’s farm as a pregnant wild mare she is tending is about to foal\, even when her teenage daughter implores Eva to leave the farm and Norway. When a young woman named Louise unexpectedly arrives on the farm\, her mysterious intentions will either bring them all together\, or devastate them one by one. \nSpanning continents and centuries\, The Last Wild Horses is a powerful tale of survival and connection–of humans\, animals\, and the indestructible bonds that unite us all. \n“Brilliantly complex….Lunde delivers a perfect blend of gripping human stories\, historical and scientific fact\, and speculative elements”—Publishers Weekly \nAbout the Author & Translator\nMaja Lunde is a Norwegian author and screenwriter. Lunde has written five books for children and young adults. She has also written scripts for Norwegian television\, including for the children’s series Barnas supershow (“The Children’s Super Show”)\, the drama series Hjem(“Home”) and the comedy series Side om Side (“Side by Side”). THE HISTORY OF BEES was her first novel for adults. She lives with her husband and three children in Oslo. \nDiane Oatley is a writer\, independent scholar\, and translator. She began her undergraduate studies of English literature at the University of Maine and completed an MA in comparative literature at the University of Oslo. Her poetry has been published in anthologies and journals in England\, Norway\, Spain\, and India\, and she is the author of three poetry chapbooks. In 2014 Diane received NORLA’s annual Translator’s Award for nonfiction\, and two of her literary translations have been long-listed for the International Dublin Literary Award. She is a member of the Norwegian Non-Fiction Writers and Translators Association and the Norwegian chapter of PEN International.

SUMMARY:A Postcard to Annie With Ida Jensen\, Martin Aitken & Désirée Ohrbeck
DESCRIPTION:On July 13\, acclaimed Danish author Ida Jessen joins us with translator Martin Aitken for a virtual discussion on the new book A Postcard for Annie. With moderator Désirée Ohrbeck\, they’ll discuss the writing and translation of the prizewinning anthology hailed as an “insightful\, original collection” (Kirkus Reviews) following the inner lives of several women on the brink\, or sidelines\, of catastrophe. From the winner of the Lifetime Award from the Danish Arts Foundation and the 2017 Critics’ Choice Award\, Ida Jessen’s A Postcard for Annie traces the tangled emotional lives of women facing moral dilemmas. A young woman witnesses a terrible accident with unexpected consequences; a mother sits with her unconscious son in a hospital room; a pair of sisters remember their mother’s hands braiding their hair. In seaside tourist villages and in snowy cities\, turbulence destabilizes composed lives\, whether through outright violence between strangers or habitual domination between loved ones. \nWriting with the same narrative generosity\, Jessen fills each story with bracing passages that splash with the living world\, only to become concentrated in the unfixed\, vacillating matter of a human psyche caught between silence and speech\, paralysis and action. \nA Postcard for Annie will be available beginning June 28 from Archipelago. This event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. This conversation will be recorded and available later to stream on our Virtual Programming page and on our YouTube channel. \nAbout the Speakers\nIda Jessen is widely considered to be the master of psychological realism in contemporary Danish fiction. SUMMARY:The Land of Short Sentences by Stine Pilgaard
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On July 12\, we’ll be discussing The Land of Short Sentences by Danish author Stine Pilgaard\, who recently joined us with translator Hunter Simpson in a virtual book talk streaming here. \nIn The Land of Short Sentences\, out in English translation on March 1 from World Editions\, a young woman relocates to an outlying community in West Jutland\, Denmark\, and is forced to find her way — not only in the bewildering environment of the residential Folk High School where her partner has been hired to teach\, but also in the inscrutable conversational forms of the local population. And on top of it all there’s the small matter of juggling her roles as mother to a newborn baby and advice columnist in the local newspaper. \nIn this understated and hilarious novel\, Stine Pilgaard conjures a tale of venturing into new and uncharted land\, of human relationships\, dilemmas\, and the ways and byways of social intercourse. \n“A charming and funny novel. … The buzz of people coming and going through the pages\, and the warmth and wit of the narrator’s voice\, make it a pleasure to be in her company”—The Guardian

SUMMARY:Carnality by Lina Wolff
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On October 4\, we’ll be discussing Carnality by Swedish author Lina Wolff\, out July 19 in translation by Frank Perry. \n\n\nAwarded a three-month stipend to travel and work\, a Swedish writer flies to Madrid\, where in a bar she meets a man with an extraordinary story to tell. In exchange for somewhere to sleep and to hide out for a few days\, he is willing to tell her the whole astonishing tale. What follows is an account of fantastic proportions and ingredients: the existence of a shadowy Internet TV show with a certain morality clause\, a threat to the storyteller’s life\, a diabolical nun\, and the story of a girl with a missing left thumb. The tale is also the precursor to a meeting between the writer and the infernal miracle worker\, Lucia—a meeting that ultimately forces the writer to make a fateful decision about her own inner essence.\n\n\n\nCarnality is a novel about the universal need for spirituality and truth—not to mention a good story—set in the seemingly unspiritual grimy underbelly of society.\n\n\n\n\n“Spellbinding…Wolff poses fascinating questions about the nature of morality and attachment throughout the propulsive narrative\, making for a triumph of ingenuity. Readers won’t want this to end.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) \n“Astonishing…an adventure through underground society.” —Book Riot\, Must-Read 2022 Books in Translation

SUMMARY:My Life as a Comedian
DESCRIPTION:“Middle-school memories interspersed with accurate humor” (Göteborgs–Posten) — On June 29\, see the comedic new Swedish coming-of-age film My Life as a Comedian /En komikers uppväxt (dir. Rojda Sekersöz\, Sweden\, 2019) at Scandinavia House!  \nAt age 12 Juha is the class clown in the suburbs of Sävbyholm\, Sweden in 1975. All he wants to do is fit into the social pecking order at school\, and being funny is the only thing he’s good at. As an adult\, Juha has found success — regaling sold-out audiences with tales of the horrid and funny experiences of his youth. But when he gets an unexpected visit from an old friend from school\, Juha is forced to revisit Sävbyholm to deal with his past — bringing back memories of his quirky family\, best friend Jenny\, the bullied Thomas and his crazy German mother\, and the bullies themselves\, Lennart and Stefan. Set between the past and present and adapted from Jonas Gardell’s best autobiographical novel\, My Life as a Comedian recalls the awkwardness and uncertainty of youth — and its rippling effects years later.  \n“Some of us get through the obstacles of childhood and young adulthood\, others fall to the wayside. My Life as a Comedian honors both factions by showing us the travails of growing up”—That Shelf \nThis screening will take place in Victor Borge Hall; attendees are required to follow all Scandinavia House safety protocols\, including wearing masks during the program and observing social distancing rules in signage. Please read our full safety protocols here. \nSpecial thanks to the Swedish Institute. \n \nASF is committed to providing an environment free from harassment or discrimination in the treatment of individuals and does not permit harassment or discrimination in any forms (whether racial\, sexual\, religious\, orientation or others) within our building. SUMMARY:The Lawyer
DESCRIPTION:Screening on June 28\, director Romas Zabarauskas’ new film The Lawyer makes its theatrical New York debut at Scandinavia House! Life drifts by for an affluent gay corporate lawyer Marius (Eimutis Kvoščiauskas)\, his time spent hosting dinner parties\, enjoying art\, and chasing young lovers. One day\, Marius’ estranged father dies. Mourning turns to love as the lawyer finds an unexpected connection with a sex-cam worker Ali (Doğaç Yildiz) — a Syrian refugee stuck in Belgrade. (A film Q&A with the director will follow the screening.) \nThe first Lithuanian feature film focusing on a male same-sex romantic relationship and one of the very few fiction films about the LGBTQ+ refugee experience in Europe\, The Lawyer has been hailed as “a socially astute\, sensitive\, and good-hearted look at interlocking identities\, never losing the humanity of its two protagonists in the boxes where they could easily be relegated” (One Room With a View) and “a remarkably sensitive film that touches on universal emotions as well as societal issues both within the gay community and in the wider world” (Shadows On The Wall) \n \nAbout the Director\nFrom the Berlinale debut of his short Porno Melodrama (2011) to his third feature The Lawyer (2020) – selected for 30+ festivals\, including seven opening\, centerpiece or closing ceremonies – Romas Zabarauskas is an inspiring queer success from the New East. This Baltic enfant terrible introduced diversity to Lithuanian screens\, delivering genre-bending films and reflecting on the (im)possibility of meaningful political action. Based in Vilnius with his fiancé Kornelijus\, Romas gives back to the LGBT+ community through his activism\, recognized with the Harvey Milk Foundation’s LGBTQ Champion Award in 2021. \nHis statement on the film: “In order to be respectful to the sensitive context of the refugee crisis\, I’ve consulted on the script with Syrian journalist Anmar Hijazi; traveled to Lebanon and met HELEM\, the first LGBT advocacy group in the Arab World; interviewed Syrian gay refugees online as well as refugees at Krnjaca camp in Belgrade\, Serbia. That said\, this story stays personal\, as I want to discuss my own European privilege in the face of cruel events which are shaping global politics.” \n \nSupport\nSpecial thanks to the Lithuanian Culture Institute and Lithuanian Cultural Attaché in the USA .

SUMMARY:Salka Valka by Halldór Laxness
DESCRIPTION:On June 21\, translator Philip Roughton joins us with Doug McIntyre for a discussion on celebrated Icelandic novelist and Nobel Prize Laureate Halldór Laxness’s novel Salka Valka\, out June 7 in new translation from Archipelago! \nOn a winter night\, an 11-year-old Salvör and her unmarried mother Sigurlína disembark at the remote\, run-down fishing village of Óseyri\, where life is “lived in fish and consists of fish.” The two struggle to make their way amidst the rough\, salt-worn men of the town. After Sigurlína’s untimely death\, Salvör pays for her funeral and walks home alone\, precipitating her coming of age as a daring\, strong-willed young woman who chops off her hair\, earns her own wages\, educates herself through political and philosophical texts\, and soon becomes an advocate for the town’s working class\, organizing a local chapter of the seamen’s union. \nA feminist coming-of-age tale\, an elegy to the plight of the working class and the corrosive effects of social and economic inequality\, and a poetic window into the arrival of modernity in a tiny industrial town\, Salka Valka is a novel of epic proportions\, living and breathing with its vibrant cast of characters\, filled with tenderness\, humor\, and remarkable pathos. \nThis event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. This conversation will be recorded and available later to stream on our Virtual Programming page and on our YouTube channel. \n“Laxness brought the Icelandic novel out from the sagas’ shadow… to read Laxness is also to understand why he haunts Iceland—he writes the unearthly prose of a poet cased in the perfection of a shell of plot\, wit\, and clarity”—The Guardian \nAbout the Speakers\nHalldór Laxness (1902-1998) is the undisputed master of modern Icelandic fiction.
