She began her undergraduate studies of English literature at the University of Maine and completed an MA in comparative literature at the University of Oslo. Her poetry has been published in anthologies and journals in England\, Norway\, Spain\, and India\, and she is the author of three poetry chapbooks. In 2014 Diane received NORLA’s annual Translator’s Award for nonfiction\, and two of her literary translations have been long-listed for the International Dublin Literary Award. SUMMARY:The Fantastic Art of Paper Cutting With Danish Paper Cut Artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, celebrated Danish paper-cutting artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen returns for a workshop on creating wonderful paper-cut beings! Clausen\, who has held paper-cutting workshops in Denmark\, Japan and the U.S.\, has created a magical paper-cut universe inhabited by beings previously confined inside the paper. “I can sense that the beings are in the paper\, but at the same time they are sad. After some help from the scissors\, they travel around happily in our diverse world\,” Clausen explains of his artwork. \nIn this online workshop held via Zoom\, Clausen will share his techniques and guide viewers through creating their own paper-cut magic. Participants will also explore the paper-cut artwork of renowned storyteller Hans Christian Andersen\, and hear about Clausen’s own journey to becoming a paper-cutting artist. The class will be limited to 30 participants to allow for audience interaction. \nThe class will take place as virtual instruction over Zoom; students should supply their own materials to cut alongside Clausen. Skill is beginner-level and above. \nMaterials: \n\nSharp pair of scissors\nFive pieces of any color paper sized approximately 4 x 4 inches (approximately the thickness of printer paper)\nFive pieces of any color paper sized approximately 1 x 2 inches\nAdditional paper to use as needed\n\nAbout the Instructor\nTorben Jarlstrøm Clausen started as a paper-cut artist in 2004. Since then\, he has exhibited over 110 places in the U.S.\, Japan\, and Denmark and has held numerous workshops in the same countries.Clausen lives in Odense\, Denmark\, which is the birthplace of world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen\, who was also a very skilled paper-cut artist. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen seeks with his paper cuts to maintain and renew this old paper cut tradition\, which Hans Christian Andersen was an exponent of almost 200 years ago. With her third feature film Girl Picture she continues her passion to tell strong female driven stories. Haapasalo’s feature debut Love and Fury (2016) followed a writer finding her own voice. Force of Habit (2019) – written and directed by a collective of seven writer-directors – dealt with gender bias and structural misuse of power. It traveled the world bringing home some awards and received Jussi-nominations (Finnish Film Awards) for best film\, best directing and best screenplay\, and was given the Nordisk Film Award in 2020. \nHaapasalo wrote and directed short film Doing the Right Thing (2020) about the early stages of covid-19 pandemic for HBO Nordic’s series At Home. She has also directed episodes for spy thriller series Shadowlines (2019). Alli Haapasalo has a BA from Aalto University’s School of Film\, Television and Scenography\, and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Additionally he has appeared alongside jazz luminaries Damien Sneed\, Melissa Aldana\, and Neal Smith\, and has also performed in the musicals Pippin and Once on this Island. \nHe completed his Bachelors degree at Berklee College of Music on scholarship\, and recently completed his Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music on scholarship\, studying with Mike Moreno. Gulbrandsen blends music from his native Norway with American jazz with compositions that are melodic and open-sounding\, with more upbeat material drawing from swinging hard bebop mixed with blues and fusion. He has released three albums under his own name\, Twelve (2007 Fresh Sound New Talent)\, Release of Tension (2011) and Looking Ahead (2018 Curling Legs records). He holds a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from Manhattan School of music. His best-selling method book Modern Jazz and Fusion Guitar was released on Hal/Leonard in December 2016. Gulbrandsen has performed with his Quartet and Trio at Rochester International Jazz Festival\,  Trondheim Jazz Festival(Norway)\, Nordic Jazz Festival (Washington DC)\, Faro International Guitar Festival (Portugal) and Acoustic Landscapes Guitar festival. In addition to being an accomplished jazz and fusion guitarist and composer\, Gulbrandsen is fluent in many other musical styles including blues\, country\, rock\, pop\, funk and classical guitar. Gulbrandsen has been interviewed  and reviewed by several major newspapers and magazines in his native Norway\, including Dagblade\, Adresseavisen\, Trønderavisa\, Namdalsavisa and Musikkpraksis and also US publications such as Vintage Guitar Magazine\, Jazz Times\, Jazz Trail and All About Jazz. His recent performances at the Rochester International Jazz festival and Trondheim Jazzfest (Norway)\, received great reviews. \nA native of Jerusalem\, Israel\, drummer Ronen Itzik relocated to the United States in late 2000. After completing degrees at Berklee College of Music and Florida State University\, he established a reputation as an in-demand drummer and sought-after recording artist in New York City. He has incorporated his unique background and knowledge of diverse musical styles into performances at venues such as the Village Vanguard\, Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, Blue Note and Bimhuis. His numerous international appearances include jazz festivals in Israel\, Germany\, Korea\, Spain\, Belgium\, Colombia\, Canada and Ukraine. Having made her debut with the short-story collection Under Sten (Under Stone) in 1989\, Jessen’s breakthrough came with the trilogy: Den der lyver (The One Who’s Lying; 2011)\, Det første jeg tænker (The First Thing I Think Of; 2006)\, and Børnene (The Children; 2009). The latter earned her the Booksellers Prize\, the Golden Laurel and a nomination for the Nordic Council Literature Prize. Her short story collection\, Postkort til Annie (Postcard to Annie; 2013) earned her another nomination for the Nordic Council Prize. Jessen was recently awarded the 2017 Critics’ Choice Award (April 2018) for The Anagrams of Doctor Bagge. It has been said that “the trio’s real thrill lies in its unique balance and those breathtaking moments in their nuanced playing” (CD Journal\, Feb 2016).  Joonas Haavisto is one of the most notable jazz musicians from the Nordic jazz scene. He joined the world-famous Steinway Artist roster in 2017. Joonas has played as a soloist with chamber orchestras and big bands. In his compositions\, Haavisto combines memorable themes with multilayered\, surprising rhythmic motifs and sophisticated harmonies. Joonas has also composed music for various groups from the trio to big bands. In 2016 he composed and played the piano music for The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki movie\, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.  \nAntti Lötjönen is one of the busiest bass players in Finland and has already toured with Jeff “Tain” Watts and Kurt Rosenwinkel. He went on to write and direct The Almost Man (2012) which had its world premiere at Karlovy Vary IFF\, winning the Crystal Globe for Best Film.  \nHe also created the TV series The Games\, winner of Best Series at the 2014 Prix Jeunesse\, and was nominated for a Kidscreen award in 2015. SUMMARY:The Fantastic Art of Paper Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Learn to create wonderful paper-cut beings with celebrated Danish paper-cutting artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen in a class held via Zoom! Clausen\, who has held paper-cutting workshops in Denmark\, Japan and the U.S.\, has created a magical paper-cut universe inhabited by beings previously confined inside the paper. “I can sense that the beings are in the paper\, but at the same time they are sad. After some help from the scissors\, they travel around happily in our diverse world\,” Clausen explains of his artwork. \nIn this online workshop\, Clausen will share his techniques and guide viewers through creating their own paper-cut magic. Participants will also explore the paper-cut artwork of renowned storyteller Hans Christian Andersen\, and hear about Clausen’s own journey to becoming a paper-cutting artist. \nThe class will take place as virtual instruction over Zoom; students should supply their own materials to cut alongside Clausen. She can often be found playing at The 55 Bar\, Bar Bayeux and other New York Jazz venues. Nilsson approaches music with an attitude of inclusiveness. She believes there is a space to be found in music that gives us the freedom to be exactly who we are. This leads her to make some unconventional choices as an improviser and composer where the lines between styles become blurred and rules get bent in order to serve the ultimate goal of sincere communication. Nilsson draws inspiration from every aspect of life and music that moves her\, combining them through the lens of Jazz to create a deeply personal expression that she hopes is universally relatable. Nilsson is on Faculty at The New School College for Performing Arts.   \nSantiago Leibson is a Brooklyn based\, Argentinian born jazz pianist and composer. His music is situated in the frontier of jazz\, improvised music\, classical and contemporary music.  As a bandleader\, he has released five records: Amon (2014)\, Pendular (2015)\, Out of Orden (2016)\, Episodes (2018) and Little Pieces (2020). JazzTrail says about Episodes: “Episodes is a swinging album with abundant evocations of past grandeur. Thence\, the trio of performers lay bare their solid command of time and space to create new narratives”. \nBased in New York City\, Marty Kenney is among his generation’s most versatile and in demand upright and electric bassists. Originally from Palmer\, Alaska\, Marty received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Northern Colorado. He relocated to New York City in 2012\, where he completed his Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music\, studying under bassist Jay Anderson. Marty has performed with musicians such as Art Lande\, Billy Drummond\, Rich Perry\, Steve Slagle\, Allan Harris\, Rez Abbasi\, Brandon Seabrook\, Brian Krock’s Big Heart Machine\, David Berkman\, and the New York Standards Quartet featuring Tim Armacost and Gene Jackson. \nBorn in Santiago de Chile\, Rodrigo Recabarren studied music at the PUC in Chile (BA) and NYU in NYC (M.M.)\, but also learned the craft in many other places and with the help of many friends during his life. This summer we’re presenting performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented jazz musicians\, composers\, and singers on Thursday evenings in June. \nThe series kicks off on June 2 with the Finnish jazz quartet Solina\, featuring award-winning singer and songwriter Eeppi Ursin on vocals\, guitarist Olli Hirvonen\, jazz bassist Kaisa Mäensivu\, and percussionist Joe Peri on drums. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above. Attendees are required to follow all Scandinavia House safety protocols\, including wearing masks at all times during the program and observing social distancing rules in signage. Please read our full safety protocols here. \nAbout the Musicians\nEeppi Ursin is a New York -based platinum-selling\, award-winning singer\, songwriter and  pianist originally from Finland. Ursin is known for her angelic-strong voice and exceptional skill set ranging from top-class performance to writing music for various groups. Her stage presence combines warmth\, style\, humor and virtuosity. Her recordings and performances as a singer vary from pop\, jazz\, dance\, a cappella and children’s music. Throughout her career she has captivated audiences all around the world performing as a vocal soloist at prestigious venues with acclaimed artists such as trumpeter Leroy Jones and  Spirit of New Orleans\, Vocal Ensemble Club For Five\, and UMO Jazz Orchestra\, to name a  few. Eeppi Ursin also collaborates with renowned theatres and modern opera ensembles as a composer and arranger. In 2022\, Eeppi Ursin was chosen as Performer of the year by Finlandia Foundation National – a  nomination that sends her performing at venues all around the United States. In 2014 she was  chosen to perform as the soloist at the President’s Independence Day Reception in Finland. In  2001 she won the 1st prize in the Lady Summertime international jazz vocal competition. Fluent in various styles  from jazz to rock to more experimental sounds\, he has formed a highly unique style  combining these different influences. In 2017 she  graduated from Manhattan School of Music after studying with professors Ron Carter  and Dave Liebman. Kaisa started her jazz quartet Kaisa’s Machine in 2016. Kaisa splits her time between Helsinki and New York when she’s not on tour somewhere else  in the world. She has recorded two albums as a band leader and is in high demand as a side  musician. Website: www.kaisamaensivu.com; @kaisazz \nDrummer\, percussionist\, and educator Joe Peri is primarily known as a jazz drummer\, but he  has played with a diverse range of bands and performers all around the world since arriving  to New York City in 2009. Joe performs regularly in many of New York City’s top jazz clubs such as Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Smalls\, Mezzrow\, Smoke Jazz Club\, the Blue Note\, and the Django to name a few.  Since graduating from the Manhattan School of Music in 2015\, Joe has collaborated with  numerous notable jazz artists like Jerry Weldon\, Pat Bianchi\, Aaron Goldberg\, Sam Yahel\,  Joel Frahm\, Yotam Silberstein\, Kevin Hays\, and Dave Kikoski. In 2018\, Joe recorded with  Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga on their grammy-nominated album “Love For Sale” released in  October of 2021. The album\, a tribute to Cole Porter\, was Bennett’s final studio recording.  Joe also performs regularly as the percussionist in the band of fashion designer and  personality Isaac Mizrahi.
