SUMMARY:The Real Valkyrie — Virtual Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 31 for a virtual book talk with Nancy Marie Brown on her new book The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women\, out today from St. Martin’s Press! With moderator Anna Dís Ólafsdóttir\, she’ll discuss the compelling new novel bringing the world of valkyries and shield-maids to vivid life. \nIn 2017\, DNA tests revealed to the collective shock of many scholars that a Viking warrior in a high-status grave in Birka\, Sweden was actually a woman. In this gripping read Brown weaves together archaeology\, history\, and literature to imagine her life and times\, showing that Viking women had more power and agency than historians have imagined. \nBrown uses science to link the Birka warrior\, whom she names Hervor\, to Viking trading towns and to their great trade route east to Byzantium and beyond. She imagines her life intersecting with larger-than-life but real women\, including Queen Gunnhild Mother-of-Kings\, the Viking leader known as The Red Girl\, and Queen Olga of Kyiv. Hervor’s short\, dramatic life shows that much of what we have taken as truth about women in the Viking Age is based not on data\, but on 19th-century Victorian biases.  \nRather than holding the household keys\, Viking women in history\, law\, saga\, poetry\, and myth carry weapons. These women brag\, “As heroes we were widely known—with keen spears we cut blood from bone.” \nThis event will take place as a Zoom webinar; please ask questions in the chat or send them in advance to  info@amscan.org. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \n“Brown introduces us to a broader version of the Viking world\, and to many powerful Viking women who have been previously dismissed as fiction. The end result is a complex\, important\, and delightful addition to women’s history.”—Pamela D. Toler\, author of Women Warriors: An Unexpected History \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nNancy Marie Brown is the author of highly praised books of nonfiction\, including Song of the Vikings. She is fluent in Icelandic and spends her summers in Iceland. She has deep ties to the Scandinavian cultural institutions in the U.S. Brown lives in East Burke\, Vermont. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR\nAnna Dís Ólafsdóttir is Executive Producer and Owner at Profilm\, an Icelandic film and production company specializing in documentaries. After working in London for many years\, Anna Dís joined Profilm in 2004. Profilm works with the leading television stations around the world and has filmed and produced over 40 documentaries and well over a hundred individual television programs. In 2018\, Anna Dís interviewed Nancy extensively for Profilm’s documentary\, “The Far Traveller\,” about the Viking Age woman who explored North America 500 years before Columbus.

SUMMARY:Daniel
DESCRIPTION:“A gripping\, superbly acted account” (Variety) — on December 8\, see the gripping new Danish autobiographical film Daniel (Denmark\, 2019; dir. Niels Arden Oplev) in New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House! \nIn  2013\, Danish photojournalist Daniel Rye (Esben Smed) was kidnapped by ISIS while documenting the civilian refugee crisis in Syria. Over his next 13 months of captivity\, Rye endured torture\, beatings\, and threats of execution\, first on his own and then alongside 19 other international hostages\, including the American journalist James Foley. Based on the book by Puk Damsgård\, Daniel follows Rye’s experiences through capture and captivity\, his relationships with other prisoners\, and the Rye family’s fears that they may never see their son alive again; while hostage negotiator Arthur navigates for their release with the Islamic State and Danish government\, Daniel struggles to survive. (138 min. In Danish and English with English subtitles) \n“A polished\, moving\, muscular thriller that never exploits or simplistically reduces its real-life horrors for entertainment value”—Variety \nFilm screenings will take place as a 3 PM matinee and 7 PM evening showing. Tickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. All attendees are required to present proof of vaccination upon arrival in compliance with New York State government; read more here. Attendees are required to follow all Scandinavia House safety protocols\, including wearing masks during the program and observing social distancing rules in signage. Please read our full safety protocols here. \nAbout the Director\n

SUMMARY:Breaking Surface
DESCRIPTION:In two screenings on August 4\, see the hit new Nordic survival thriller Breaking Surface (Sweden\, Belgium\, Norway\, 2019; dir. Joachim Hedén) at Scandinavia House! \nHailed as a “ticking-clock drama that keeps the momentum high throughout” (Third Coast Review)\, Breaking Surface follows half-sisters Ida (Moa Gammel) and Tuva (Madeleine Martin) as they set out a few days after Christmas on a winter dive in a remote part of the Norwegian coastline. Towards the end of the dive\, a rockslide traps Tuva under water; as Ida surfaces to call for help\, she discovers that the rockslide has struck above water as well — burying their equipment\, phones and car keys\, and cutting them off completely from any chance of outside rescue. As the frantic race for survival unfolds\, Ida is put to the ultimate test of character and forcefulness fighting to save Tuva\, exposing a fractured sisterhood with stakes beyond simple survival. (82 min. In Swedish & Norwegian with English subtitles) \n“A worthy representative of the fascinating world of genre films\, Breaking Surface shows us just how much the field has to offer in the way of formal sophistication”—Cineuropa \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above. Screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall; ticket sales are capped at 80 per showing. Attendees are required to follow all Scandinavia House safety protocols\, including presenting a Vaccination Card at the front desk to remove masks during the program and observing social distancing rules in signage. Please read our full safety protocols here. \n \nAbout the Director\nJoachim Hedén (1967) is the writer and director of Breaking Surface. His other work includes the Tribeca Film Festival selection New York Waiting (2006) and Framily (2010). \nHe also directed the soccer comedy 10.000 Timmar (2014).
